The John Dummer Blues Band's reputation as one of those groups that hung forever on the cusp of a major step forward, but never quite made it over the top, is one of those odd little injustices with which the British blues scene forever prickles. There is simply no way of judging why one band made it while another failed to crackle, but Dummer and company were unluckier than most and, by 1973, their fortunes had reached rock bottom. Vertigo, their home for two albums, was about to let them go as part of the company-wide purge that so devastated what had once been one of Britain's most visionary record labels -- and when the bandmembers returned to the studio, it was in the knowledge that they had one last chance to convince the bigwigs to keep them on board. They should have succeeded, too. The result is a pièce de résistance, a sparkling album that not only packs some of the band's best ever recordings, but also boasts one of their strongest ever lineups: organist Colin Earl and guitarists Dave Kelly and Pete Emery, a rhythm section of Ian Thompson and Pick Withers, and, on saxophone, the legendary Graham Bond. But somehow it all slipped through the cracks. Within a year, Bond was dead; this may well have been his last ever recording session, a manic four-day span that saw no less than 11 tracks kicked out, and then abandoned. Before that, though, Vertigo did indeed pass on the album, and attempts to land a U.S. deal via the Foghat connection (Colin Earl, of course) were doomed to failure. The tapes were shelved, the band broke up, and it would be 35 years before anybody ever thought to give them another listen. This UK band came into being in 1965, evolving from the Muskrats and the Grebbells, and lasted until the early 70s, surviving numerous personnel changes. The line-up included prominent British blues artists such as pianist Bob Hall, guitarist Dave Kelly and his sister Jo Ann Kelly, Mike Cooper, and Tony McPhee. The band backed touring American artists John Lee Hooker and Howlin’ Wolf, and recorded albums for Mercury and Vertigo between 1969 and 1973. Drummer John Dummer went on to work with English pop vocal group Darts in the mid-70s. In recent years all Dummer’s albums have become much sought after items in the collectors’ market and currently carry very high prices. ---allmusic.com

Born on 19th November 1944 in Surbiton, John Dummer took up drumming during his school days and played in the almost obligatory school band. In 1963 he formed Lester Square and the G.T's and for the next two years toured Britain and Germany playing straight R & B music. After a short spell on the Kingston and Surbiton Borough News, during which time he met Thump, John formed the five-piece John Dummer Blues Band and with them made 5 albums. The band recorded two more LPs for Philips, going on to make another one (their sixth) which the company rejected. At this point John left the group and went to MCA as Promotion Manager for three years followed by a similar post at Electra for a year. From Electra he joined A & M and it was during his time there (he left in early 1977) that he began playing with DARTS.

The backbone of the Darts rhythm section, John was also responsible for penning 'Can't Get Enough Of Your Love', 'How Many Nights' and the truly wonderful 'Late Last Night'.

John left Darts in 1980 and immediately afterwards formed a group with his wife, Helen, called True Life Confessions. John continues..."We had two Afro-French girl singers, and two drummers (me and Esso from the seminal punk group The Lurkers). Harry Kakouli (ex-Squeeze) was our bass player and one of our guitarists was Mark Nevin who later went on to have a number one hit with his own song 'It's Got To Be Perfect' with Fairground Attraction. We played a lot round London mainly and had several records out on the A & M label, none of which made the charts. Helen and I had a number 50 hit though as John Dummer and Helen April with our whistling and walking version of 'Blues Skies' and a lot of airplay with something called 'Own Up If You're Over 25.'

"After True Life Confessions I went on to manage The Screaming Blue Messiahs who had chart albums and were successful touring Europe and the States. After three years of that I was pretty exhausted and, on a whim, Helen and I decided to sell up our ancient grinding mill house in West Sussex and move to France. We went to the Dordogne (where else) and after two years of restoring a Chatreuse near a place called Sarlat we sold up again and bought a windmill in the Alentejo region of Portugal. This was fun. High up on a hill overlooking miles of empty countryside with the sea far in the distance. We had to sink our own well for water, and electricity was provided by solar panels. After a couple of years of working on the house and mill we decided to move back to the comparatively civilised area of France". (John, Helen, their dog and several cats now live in a three-hundred-year-old cottage in the French countryside in South West France).

"I started a group, Screwy Truants, with some young French musicians and we toured around playing fętes and festivals. I also recorded and sang and played harmonica in a duo with the French guitarist and singer Jean-Claude Manuel, and drummed with the harmonica player and blues singer Nico Toussaint".

"Now I work mostly at weekends as an antiques trader in the 'brocante' markets, which take place in small towns and villages throughout France. During the week I restore furniture and write. I've just finished a first novel and am halfway through a second. I get back to England regularly for buying trips and to meet up with friends and family." --- amazingdarts.com

The John Dummer Band was a British blues band, of the 1960s and 70s, was noted for its extensive roster of members, including Graham Bond, Dave Kelly, Jo Ann Kelly, Tony McPhee Bob Hall and John O'LearyPick Withers, and for supporting US bluesmen such as Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker on UK tours.

John Dummer (born 19 November 1944, Surbiton, Surrey) formed the John Dummer Blues Band in 1965.The original line-up was John Dummer(vocals, harmonica) Roger Pearce(guitar) Pete Moody(bass) Bob Hall(piano) and Dave Bidwell(drums.) Moody later left to be replaced by Tony Walker(bass) and his sister Regine Walker joined Dummer as a second vocalist.

The band was signed to Mercury Records and their first album, "Cabal" was released in 1968. Dave and Jo-Anne Kelly and Tony McPhee were featured artists and the band was the same as had regularly played the Studio 51 Club. Tony McPhee left the band shortly after to re-form The Groundhogs.

The second album, "The John Dummer Blues Band," featured Dummer, Hall, Thomson, Kelly and his sister Jo Ann Kelly (vocals) and new lead guitarist Adrian "Putty" Pietryga from The Deep Blues Band from Bristol. This band toured extensively in Britain and Europe for two years.

By the third album 'John Dummer's Famous Music Band (1970) Dave Kelly and Bob Hall had left to be replaced by Nick Pickett(guitar, violin and vocals.) Pietryga and Thomson remained, being augmented by Chris Trengove (alto sax).

After the third album the band "drifted apart", only to reform to record again when their song "Nine By Nine" featuring violinist Nick Pickett was #1 in France. The 1972 album Blue, released just as John Dummer Band, featured a cover by Roger Dean, [4] whilst the band had shrunk to a four-piece blues-rock band, comprising Dummer, Pickett, Pietryga and Thomson. The band's fifth album, Oobleedoobleejubilee (1973), released as John Dummer's Oobleedooblee Band, had a country music style, whilst the line-up again included the Kelly, along with Michael Evans (violin) and Roger Brown (vocals). The bands final album, recorded in 1973, included Graham Bond (sax), Pick Withers (drums), Pete Emery (guitar) and Colin Earl (Foghat) (keyboards), but the album was shelved, and the band broke up in 1974.
