This volume was recorded live in Washington, D.C. and features performances by Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Run-D.M.C., Jon Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Vanessa Williams, and Tracy Chapman. Blige and Crow duet on "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," while Bon Jovi performs two lovelorn holiday songs -- "Please Come Home for Christmas" and "Christmas, Baby Please Come Home." Clapton teams up with Chapman on a version of her hit "Give Me One Reason," and with Crow on "Merry Christmas Baby." Run-D.M.C. performs "Christmas in Hollis," and Vanessa Williams turns in a rendition of "What Child Is This." Despite the freedom gained in the American Civil War, most African-Americans had seen little change in their living conditions by the beginning of the 20th Century. Ironically, it would take another conflict to change the outlook. The First World War created jobs for unskilled workers in the North and many took the opportunity to escape the cloying restrictions of the South. The unsophisticated sounds of the country were no longer relevant to their lifestyles and the music changed accordingly. Let me be upfront and clear - I love Delta Blues guitar work and the integrity of emotion that can only come from living a life trapped in the hard situation found during the birth of these blues. This is a time that is past and will most likely never be recreated again - thankfully for those involved. That said, these times did create an intense state of music and lyrics that I am most thankful were captured for me to appreciate and empathize with.

These two discs do capture many of the great delta bluesmen performing many of there best works. I feel it is a fine compilation of the works from the era.

I tend to like the songs with a spiritual bent and those expressing the deep lonesomeness of hopelessness associated with being trapped in a hard and uncaring society with no way out. My favorite song by far is "Dark Was The Night - Cold Was The Ground" by Blind Willie Johnson. The guitar actually speaks to you in blue words while the lyrics are only spiritual moans - a deep powerfully sad and blue emotion. No amount of money could ever produce such a song. Listening to these blues it is easy to see how musicians who have a deep love of what music can emote were attracted to the Delta Blues era. The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Eric Clapton, amongst many others, were all fascinated with the sound and emotion created in this era. The stories in the songs run from the standard male/female relations, spirituals, death and down and out hopelessness.

If you are looking for smooth voices and songs to dance to, don't think about these recordings. These recordings are deep sadness and expressions of human emotions which help all survive rough times. The recordings go all the way back to the late 1920's and many are surprisingly good for the era and situation in which they were recorded. This 2 CD box set is packed with some pretty rare blues sides, most from the 1950's era, with the rest from the 60's. This set focuses mainly on 45 RPM singles pressed on small labels because they're so powerful and exciting sounding, as opposed to a full LP. A number of these performers did record albums but focusing on singles strips the music down to the essential blues. This is the down and dirty sounding electric blues from mostly lesser/unknown singer/guitarists balanced by tracks from a few well known performers as well.. Among the better known perfromers are Juke Boy Bonner, Lafayette Thing Thomas, Guitar Shorty, Ike Turner, Buddy Guy, Lonnie Brooks, Earl Hooker, and Homesick James. ---Editorial Reviews, amazon.com

Frank Frost (15 April 1936, Auvergne, Arkansas, USA, d. 12 October 1999, Helena, Arkansas, USA.) Frost’s skills encompassed keyboards and guitar, but like many other blues artists, he started with the harmonica. After moving to St. Louis as a teenager, he took up playing with Sonny Boy ‘Rice Miller’ Williamson in the mid-50s, appearing regularly with him on the famous radio show King Biscuit Time. He also teamed up with Robert Nighthawk and his son Sam Carr, before relocating to the south. In 1962 he recorded for Sam Phillips as part of the Nighthawks trio, featuring Carr on drums and guitarist Big Jack Johnson. One single and an album, Hey Boss Man!, resulted, featuring a very tough and raw, but tight, down-home blues sound, unusual on record at this time. A similar sound emerged from his next sessions in Nashville in 1966, produced by Scotty Moore, which produced three fine singles and, later, an album on Jewel Records. ‘My Back Scratcher’, Frost’s take on Slim Harpo’s ‘Baby Scratch My Back’, was even a minor R&B hit.

Subsequently, Frost went back to mainly local performing in the juke joints around his home area in the Mississippi Delta, basing himself at Eddie Mae’s Café in Helena, Arkansas. He also continued to make records and tour with Carr and Johnson, releasing 1979’s Rockin’ The Juke Joint Down as the Jelly Roll Kings. Frost undertook some highly acclaimed appearances in Europe and, following his appearance in the 1986 movie Crossroads, recorded several well-received solo albums before his death in October 1999. --- oldies.com

George Butler was born in Autaugaville, Alabama on October 1, 1936. His mother nicknamed him ‘Wild Child’ before he could even walk. George took up the harmonica by the age of six and at 14 he was already performing professionally. In the late 1950’s ‘Wild Child’ Butler moved to Chicago and became a blues sensation. His recording debut was released in 1964. Butler continued to record and tour extensively for decades. In the early 1980’s while on tour in the Yukon Butler met a Canadian named Elaine who would soon become his wife and manager.

In order to remain in Canada but be close to Chicago the Butlers settled in the Windsor area in 1985. While living in Windsor, Butler recorded These Mean Old Blues in 1991 and Stranger in 1994. In the summertime Butler could be found enjoying a day of fishing and playing his harmonica at fishing holes and farm ponds around Stoney Point. George ‘Wild Child’ Butler passed away March 1, 2005 at the age of 68. Mr. Butler had been preparing to record his next CD and had finished writing all the songs for the album prior to his passing. --- windsor-communities.com

Born in Baton Rouge in 1936, Raful Neal took up the harp at age 14, tutored by a local player named Ike Brown and influenced by Chicago mainstay Little Walter. Neal's first band, the Clouds, also included guitarist Buddy Guy. This was the band Little Walter heard while in Baton Rouge and invited them to move up to Chicago and fill in at the gigs Walter couldn't make. Guy jumped at the chance but Neal decided to stay in Louisiana and raise his family. The harpist debuted on vinyl in 1958 with a 45 for Don Robey's Houston-headquartered Peacock Records. But "Sunny Side of Love," fine though it was, didn't lead to an encore for Peacock or anywhere else until much later, when Neal turned up with 45s on Whit, La Louisiane, and Fantastic.

Neal's debut album, the aptly titled Louisiana Legend, first emerged on Bob Greenlee's King Snake Records and was picked up by Alligator in 1990. I Been Mistreated, Neal's equally swampy follow-up, was released on Ichiban the following year; sons Noel (on bass) and Raful Jr. (on guitar) pitched in to help their old man out. Neal toured around the world and in 1997 he contributed harp to a couple of tracks on Tab Benoit's Live: Swampland Jam record. The understated but solid Old Friends appeared in 1998. ‘Back in Blue’ is a tribute album - a complete re-recording of AC/DC's classic ‘Back in Black’, featuring some of Australia’s leading blues artists. All profits made from the release of the ‘Back in Blue’ album will be donated to Beyond Blue - one of the most recognisable avenues of help for depression sufferers and their families - to raise awareness of depression and treatments available within the community.

Darren Griffis, a QLD-based blues musician whose life has been touched by depression, conceived the ‘Back in Blue’ idea. Darren’s love of Aussie blues musicians, and of AC/DC, lead him to the idea of putting the two together to provide some positive outcomes for not only those affected by depression, but also to those at risk of falling victim to it in the future.

Music - and particularly blues music - is the great communicator; it crosses all boundaries, including linguistic and personal ones. Music allows people to say things to others that are very difficult in normal speech. The ‘Back In Black’ album has become the highest selling rock album in history and is arguably the greatest rock album ever produced by an Australian band. Even in 2015, on the 35th anniversary of its release, It’s a national icon, and known universally throughout Australia. What better vehicle to draw attention to an illness that affects so many throughout the community?

The artists who have answered the call to help make this album are based all over Australia and the album is being recorded in studios across three states, with a release date planned at Blues On Broadbeach for May 2016.

‘Back in Blue’ is a not-for-profit organisation, and committee members are volunteers and passionate the project as an innovative and worthy way to raise attention about depression and to open the door to discussion by using the medium of popular music. --- bluesonbroadbeach.com
