In 2011 “Daddy’s Cash” was invited to cooperate with legendary John Lee Hooker, Jr., who twice has been nominated for a Grammy Award: in 2004 for his debut album, Blues with a Vengeance, and in 2008 for his third album, All Odds Against Me. This outstanding Blues musician blends diverse musical styles from Rhythm and Blues to Jazz and Funk, creating his own contemporary arrangements.

The new record “That’s what the Blues is all about” includes 14 songs, written by John Lee Hooker Jr., performed in new arrangements with “Daddy’s Cash”. This album shows the extraordinary mix of the ‘American rhythm’ combined with Polish fantasy. His name is John Lee Hooker, and he is a blues singer with a Motor City connection. But he isn't the John Lee Hooker; the bluesman heard on Blues With a Vengeance is John Lee Hooker Jr., and he was named after his legendary father (who passed away in 2001 after a very long and productive career). Hooker Jr. has been quoted as saying, "If I tried to fill my father's shoes, I'd get cramps just trying to take one step" -- which is a sensible attitude because Hooker Sr. was truly irreplaceable. Hooker Jr. isn't pretending to be his dad, and truth be told, they don't sound a lot alike; stylistically, Blues With a Vengeance is much closer to the electric-urban blues of Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, and B.B. King. This 2004 release lacks the moody, dusky, swampy qualities one associates with Hooker Sr., who was greatly influenced by Mississippi Delta blues -- and while the older Hooker had a unique, unorthodox way of turning the 12-bar format inside out, Hooker Jr. is more likely to embrace those 12 bars in a straightforward fashion. Nonetheless, Hooker Jr. doesn't ignore his father's legacy on this CD, which includes performances of "Boom Boom" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" -- and by tackling a few gems that are so closely identified with his dad and putting his stamp on them, Hooker Jr. makes it abundantly clearly that he is his own man. Hooker Jr.'s own songs, however, dominate this CD, and his wild sense of humor is a definite plus on spirited originals like "Blues Ain't Nothin' But a Pimp," and the topical "Goin' Down to Baghdad." Blues With a Vengeance has no problem demonstrating that the younger Hooker is a promising bluesman in his own right. --- Alex Henderson, allmusic.com

Turkey has long had a reputation for being the most westernized country in the Islamic world. As a result, a lot of North American music that is frowned upon by the far-right Islamic fundamentalist governments of Saudi Arabia and the Sudan -- music ranging from alternative rock to hip-hop to jazz -- isn't hard to find in Istanbul or Ankara. And there are visits by American bluesmen like John Lee Hooker, Jr. This 2010 release, as its title indicates, focuses on a live gig in Istanbul, where the son of the late blues icon John Lee Hooker, Sr. performs material from three studio albums (2004's Blues with a Vengeance, 2006's Cold as Ice, and 2008's All Odds Against Me) as well as some previously unreleased songs. By now, it should be more than obvious that Hooker is far from a carbon copy of his legendary dad; he's much more soul/funk-minded, he doesn't have his dad's penchant for swampy, dusky grooves, and his lyrics have a decidedly 21st century focus. This memorable Istanbul show, in fact, is full of 21st century references. "They Hatin' on Me," with its references to playa-haters (petty individuals who are envious of someone else's success), shows Hooker's awareness of hip-hop terminology -- and "The People Want a Change" and "It's a Shame" (not to be confused with the Spinners' 1970 hit) voice his dissatisfaction with the economic and political direction the United States took during the years when George W. Bush was president. Whether he is mentioning Puff Daddy on "Wait Until My Change Comes" or singing about the economic crisis of the late 2000s/early 2010s, no one will mistake this Istanbul appearance for a Hooker, Sr. concert. He includes one Hooker, Sr. standard in this set ("Boom Boom"), but even then, it's clear that Hooker has his own style.
