To be the daughter of a Living Legend is a major obstacle. To choose to follow in his footsteps is a major undertaking. But rather than relying on her father, Zakiya has pursued life — and music — on her own terms, overcoming personal tragedy and skepticism along the way. This certainly rings true with Zakiya and she carries her father’s seminal blues torch confidently into the future.</p> <p>She is a versatile vocalist and a fantastic performer putting on a witty, entertaining show with her band. In 1991 Zakiya made her first public appearance with her father. Since then Zakiya has gone on to perform with Etta James, John Hammond, Taj Mahal, and Charlie Musselwhite. By 1993 Zakiya had released her debut, ‘Another Generation of the Blues.’ 1997’s “Flavors of the Blues” came next illustrating Zakiya’s supple blues and smooth, jazz-inflected style. 2001 brought an Indie live release ‘Colors of the Blues’ recorded in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2009, ‘Keeping it Real,’ produced by her husband Ollan C. Bell, was released on their independent label, Boogie With The Hook Records. --- rootsandblues.ca</p> <p>download (mp3 @320 kbs):</p> <p><a href="http://ul.to/h1lpceha" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">uploaded </a> <a href="https://yadi.sk/d/EfTE6Ij7jsuXM" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">yandex </a> <a href="http://www.4shared.com/zip/VmLapilSce/ZkHkr-FotB96.html" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">4shared </a> <a href="https://mega.nz/#!Dx0WAJbZ!N5d8snnxBjbl9PBkbo1WRZy0_u6lJzJzpLsh9OTUVQM" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mega </a> <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/download/f9fwn2hddwaxysc/ZkHkr-FotB96.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mediafire</a> <a href="http://zalivalka.ru/318190" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">zalivalka </a> <a href="https://cloud.mail.ru/public/MWnr/P7ePzFViW" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">cloudmailru </a> <a href="https://www.oboom.com/RU2H49J4/ZkHkr-FotB96.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">oboom </a> <a href="http://uplea.com/dl/498E35A72AD44DD" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">uplea </a></p> <p> </p> <p><a href="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/javascript:history.back();">back</a></p> <p><strong>Zakiya Hooker - Flavors Of The Blues (1996)</strong></p> <p><img src="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/ObrMuz/Blues/ZakiyaHooker/flavors.jpg" border="0" alt="Image could not be displayed. At least two of them, Zakiya Hooker (formerly Vera Lee Hooker) and John Lee Hooker, Jr., have followed in their dad's footsteps by becoming blues singers. But neither John Lee Hooker, Jr. nor Zakiya have tried to emulate him stylistically, and the swampy Mississippi-meets-Detroit approach he was known for is rarely heard on KEEPING IT REAL (which, for the most part, has a decidedly urban, more Chicago-influenced flavor). Subtlety and understatement prevail on this enjoyable 2009 release; Zakiya isn't an aggressive belter of the Etta James/Koko Taylor variety, but that doesn't mean that she isn't expressive.</p> <p>Emotionally, Zakiya says what she needs to say on electric urban blues offerings such as "Cold Cold Feeling," "Crossroads," and "Hug U, Kiss U," and she is equally pleasing when she detours into soul on "Scared to Love" (a tune that wouldn't be out of place on a Teena Marie album), "What Am I Gonna Do," and the title track. One thing Zakiya does have in common with her father is a fondness for moody minor-key offerings, but the minor-key moodiness that prevails on "End of the World Blues" and the clever "Love Foreclosure" has more in common with the blues-soul of Bobby "Blue" Bland, Benny Latimore, and Little Milton than it does with John Lee Hooker's swampy minor-key moodiness. The disc's swampiest track is "Rock These Blues Away," a duet with John Lee Hooker himself; obviously, parts of KEEPING IT REAL were recorded long before 2009. But anyone who plays KEEPING IT REAL in its entirety will realize that Zakiya is very much her own person, and her individuality serves her well on this 62-minute CD. ---Alex Henderson, allmusic.com</p> <p>download:   <a href="http://ul.to/ovghneag" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">uploaded </a> <a href="https://anonfiles.com/file/e915c3d24e89b9816b63025d73bfaad8" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">anonfiles </a> <a href="https://mega.co.nz/#!jgA2wYCJ!GVxEHgO4k_Iuvc9KlWgmcCNtAf1jOhZTegXG96Ds0lo" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mega </a> <a href="http://www.4shared.com/zip/sl8PkoMQ/ZHr-KIR09.html" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">4shared </a> <a href="https://www.mixturecloud.com/media/download/xqUTZw3t" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mixturecloud </a> <a href="http://yadi.sk/d/WgVv8CAR7A-Ey" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">yandex </a> <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/download/fi667raf04hs08r/ZHr-KIR09.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mediafire </a> <a href="http://www.ziddu.com/download/22621490/ZHr-KIR09.zip.html" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">ziddu</a></p> <p><a href="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/javascript:history.back();">back</a></p> <p><strong>Zakiya Hooker - Keeping It Real (2009)</strong></p> <p><img src="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/ObrMuz/Blues/ZakiyaHooker/keeping.jpg" border="0" alt="Image could not be displayed. You could even say she had a front-row seat to view the best the genre had to offer, right in her own living room. Her dad was the renowned blues giant John Lee Hooker. She started to follow in her father's career path in 1991, a year that turned out to be bittersweet for the younger Hooker. That was the year she took to the stage with her dad for the first time, and father and daughter delivered a duet. As happy as that occasion was, Zakiya Hooker soon was forced to face tragedy. The youngest of her three children, John, 20, was killed in a car crash. Three years earlier, son Maurice was jailed and faced a long confinement behind bars. Like her father and a generation of blues artists before her, Zakiya Hooker learned how to prevail in the face of adversity. Flavors of the Blues, her CD from Pointblank Records/Virgin issued in 1996, is a testament to the strength of the spirit. Silvertone/Zomba Records released Hooker's debut, Another Generation of the Blues, in 1993. The album lived up to its title with the inclusion of a duet sung by John Lee and Zakiya, one generation of artists joining together with another. Flavors of the Blues also featured a duet with her legendary father. The younger Hooker, whose name at birth was Vera Lee Hooker, didn't change her name until after she'd relocated to California following the breakup of her first marriage. As a single mother, she re-christened herself with a first name that translates from Hebrew as "pure," and from Swahili as "intelligence." In 1987, she became acquainted with her next husband, Ollan Christopher, who had worked previously with Curtis Mayfield. The couple owns a recording studio, and Christopher contributes to his wife's music as bass player, co-songwriter, and producer. He also sang background on her second album. ---Linda Seida, Rovi</p> <p>download:   <a href="http://ul.to/7ks46143" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">uploaded </a> <a href="https://anonfiles.com/file/aa63cf055513306d567c9916a196f1ce" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">anonfiles </a> <a href="https://mega.co.nz/#!roQVWQiL!HbIOW3jZRCw4pMycmvDpemesy2QePbWBEMwHIpqdp9I" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mega </a> <a href="http://www.4shared.com/zip/_NPE7AZ2/ZHr-AGotB95.html" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">4shared </a> <a href="https://www.mixturecloud.com/media/download/eoQDojka" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mixturecloud </a> <a href="http://yadi.sk/d/MN63Bimr7A12U" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">yandex </a> <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/download/x3svxhv4n8s11e2/ZHr-AGotB95.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mediafire </a> <a href="http://www.ziddu.com/download/22621552/ZHr-AGotB95.zip.html" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">ziddu</a></p> <p><a href="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/javascript:history.back();">back</a></p>
