Atlantic continues to trawl through its blues vaults on this generous set featuring many of the music's outstanding and often overlooked vocalists. Taking in some rarities and many updated classics, the 28-track mix includes excellent sides by longtime label star Ruth Brown, vintage blues chanteuse Sippie Wallace, urban blues pioneer Leroy Carr, and the "Poet of the Blues," Percy Mayfield. And while a few other marquee names appear, the bulk is comprised of highlights from such relatively obscure singers as Pearl Woods, Wesley Wilson (doing his version of the Bessie Smith perennial "Give Me a Pigfoot [And a Bottle of Beer]"), and Lou Willie Turner. In the spotlight or not, though, this wide-ranging collection makes for a fine stretch by the stereo. --- Stephen Cook, Rovi

Sampling treats from such blues hotbeds as Chicago, Kansas City, and New Orleans, this single disc from Atlantic's blues box spotlights the men at the ivories with 23 good-to-excellent sides. Giving due respect to the boogie-woogie heyday of the '30s and '40s, the collection includes four 1972 sides by Jimmy Yancey (cut just prior to his death) and three early-'50s numbers by Meade "Lux" Lewis. Another fine tinkler, Champion Jack Dupree, reveals the rougher side of the boogie craze with some fine, latter-day barrelhouse gems off of his universally lauded Blues From the Gutter album. And not to forget Kansas City and the Crescent City, the disc also includes a true classic by Big Joe Turner and Pete Johnson ("Roll 'Em Pete"), a few solid sides by big band veteran and onetime Charlie Parker employer Jay McShann, and a genre-defining bayou classic compliments of Professor Longhair ("Tipitina"). With an intriguing 1953 demo by Ray Charles and an early-'70s funk rambler from Dr. John ("Junco Partner") to top things off, Atlantic Blues: Piano makes for a quality session by the stereo. --- Stephen Cook, Rovi

These aren't necessarily all classic performances, but most of the music is of the highest quality. The mix includes cuts by such marquee names as B.B. King and John Lee Hooker, as well as more obscure fare from the likes of Texas Johnny Brown and Cornell Dupree. And for a bit of soul, there's even a clutch of songs by Albert King and Ike and Tina Turner. A fine blues party soundtrack. --- Stephen Cook, Rovi

Atlantic Records had some of its finest success in the 60s and 70s with groups carrying and amplifying the blues tradition (Led Zeppelin, Cream/Eric Clapton, even the Rolling Stones' tenure with the label). So it's fitting that they also recorded some influential bluesmen over their 50-year history, gathering them on collections spotlighting guitar, piano, vocals, and this, the Chicago blues style.

Several second-generation Anglo/American blues disciples help out. Eric Clapton and Dr. John back Buddy Guy and Junior Wells on three hot tracks including "T-Bone Shuffle." Influential blues guitarist Freddie King gets help from King Curtis and arranger Donny Hathaway on three tracks including the talkin' blues "Play It Cool." (King is again heard on the live "Goin' Down.") Duane Allman contributes solid slide guitar to Otis Rush's renditions of BB King's "Gambler's Blues" and Chuck Wills' "I Feel So Bad" (the Memphis version Elvis always had in him.)

The highlights also include live performances from Chess alumni Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Willie Dixon w/Koko Taylor recorded at a 1972 Ann Arbor, MI concert. All passed their creative peak by then but could still rouse a crowd, as Taylor does on her crackling "Wang Dang Doodle."

This set (also part of a four-CD box) supplements, but doesn't substitute, for Chess' "The Blues" volumes or the more recent "Best of Chess Blues" samplers. Buy those and best-ofs from your favorites among them before investing here. --- Anthony G Pizza, amazon.com
