On October 16th, 1973, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, one of gospel music's first and greatest stars, died from a blood clot on her brain at the age of 58. She did not depart from the world with the glamour and drama that she had lived in it. When she died, she was memorialized with only a fraction of the fanfare befitting her stature and was buried in a unmarked grave in the Northwood Cemetery in the northern outskirts of Philadelphia. Though she had played her music for hundreds of thousands of people, sold volumes of records, toured internationally as an American gospel master, and in the process permanently changed the face of gospel and rock music, she quickly began to fade from popular cultural memory.

But not forever. At the beginning of the new millennium, Sister Rosetta Tharpe began a startling posthumous second act in literate American pop culture. On September 11, 2001, Bob Dylan released his thirty-first album, Love and Theft. Throughout the record, a sly, roguish paean to American blues, gospel, and riverboat music, Dylan quotes liberally from a number of his musical heroes, including Sister Rosetta Tharpe, whose version of the Gene Austin song, "The Lonesome Road," can be heard in the melody, lyrics, and delivery of the apocalyptic last track, "Sugar Baby." Just weeks after this, in October 2001, American audiences were enthralled by Jean-Pierre Jeunet's film Amelie. In the film, one of Amelie's friends watches a full-screen, thirty-second clip of Sister Rosetta Tharpe at the peak of her powers performing her incendiary gospel music in 1962 on the influential show TV Gospel Time. The year 2002 saw the release of both a four-disc, eighty-one track box set called Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Original Soul Sister, on the U.K. label Proper Records, and the inception of a now nearly complete edition of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's recordings on the French label, Fremeaux and Associates. ---h-net.org

Sister Rosetta, singer-songwriter-guitarist, was the first superstar of Gospel music and the first to hit the secular charts and airwaves with Chrisitan music. Most of her important early work, extending back to the late 1930's, is represented in this spectacular 4 CD collection. It shows hints of the rocking music of the 1950's that she inspired, through followers like Little Richard (Sister Rosetta was his favorite singer in 1944 when she invited him onstage to sing with her in Macon, Georgia). The mastering reduces the noise floor, so that the old recordings are more enjoyable to listen to. The accompanying biographical booklet is also full of interesting information and photos of this rock and roll trailblazer - the original soul sister! ---B. Robyn Donison, amazon.com

Anthology specialists Proper Records has issued a fabulous, 4-CD boxed set of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's work, titled Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Original Soul Sister, accompanied by a thick, 40-page book of historical photos, liner notes and exhaustive discography information, courtesy of Joop Visser Raved.

Rosetta Tharpe with Cab CallowayEvident from every track is the fact that for Tharpe, the guitar was not merely accompaniment. More often than not, she gives her instrument 'equal billing', so to speak, opening up extended guitar solos (such as on her cover of Washington Philip's "That's All"), showing herself to be virtuoso.

"Rock Me" is the subtitle of the second disc, and serves to further accent Tharpe's integration into the swing circuit, with cuts included from wartime broadcast of "Jubilee", a live-recored radio broadcast aimed by the AFRS (Armed Forces Radio Services) aimed to entertain overseas troops. On "Sin Is To Blame", she is backed by Erskine Hawkins & His Orchestra, and on another take on her hit "This Train", she teams up with Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five. ---gospelflava.com

This set is reissued in brand new, slimline rack-friendly packaging, which keeps all of the detail and production values of the original Properbox sets, but with each CD packaged in mini LP sleeves.

Not only did Sister Rosetta Tharpe play and sing gospel music with jazz groups in a show business environment, she was also the first artist to incorporate the city blues style from the 1930s with gospel music during the 1940s. A compelling performer and innovator, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a true star.

This comprehensive 81 track set with its fabulous artwork renders all other Sister Rosetta Tharpe collections redundant. It was voted one of "The 100 Greatest Guitar Albums" by Mojo magazine (August 2003). ---europadisc.co.uk

The music on this set of four CDs is fantastic, and shows that Sister Rosetta Tharpe was an awesome performer in her own right, and not simply a trailblazer, an inspiration, or an influence on future generations, as she is often portrayed.

It is easy to appreciate the effect she has had on future generations, however, and there are hints of nascent rock and roll stylings (vocal and instrumental) throughout the collection, as well as the expected barn-storming gospel and soul performances which dominate the four discs. And that voice...

Unfortunately, the packaging and the track selection do seem to have been rather slapdash in nature, with many tracks appearing multiple times over the four discs, and not always in the places indicated in the track list, either! The four discs are individually titled ("Shout, Sister, Shout", "Rock Me", "Singing In My Soul" and "This Train"), and I wouldn't be surprised if the four discs had previously been available, perhaps as individual albums with extra or "bonus" tracks tacked on at the end of each one - this would explain some of the duplication, especially why so many of the duplications occur towards the end of each CD. ---Glasgow Dreamer, amazon.co.uk

Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s electric gospel sound was crucial in paving the way for rock and roll, and the late singer and guitarist is finally getting her day at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. She joins this a class of inductees that includes big-name rock bands like Bon Jovi, Dire Straits and The Cars.

Rosetta Tharpe was a huge star in her time. Born in a small town in Arkansas in 1915, she was raised in the Pentecostal church. Tharpe honed her musical talent at tent revivals and churches, but found fame after moving to New York City in the 1930s. Her electric sanctified sound was an overnight sensation in the city’s nightclubs, and secular audiences fell in love with her ecstatic guitar playing.

Her fame faded by the 1960s as a new generation of musicians began to expand upon her style. She found new audiences in Europe, but otherwise settled into a quiet life in Philadelphia. Tharpe died in 1973 at the age of 58. Although her name fell into the shadows of history for decades, her influence did not.

“She influenced Elvis Presley, she influenced Johnny Cash, she influenced Little Richard,” says Tharpe’s biographer Gayle Wald. “She influenced innumerable other people who we recognize as foundational figures in rock and roll.”

Sister Rosetta Tharpe is set to be posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame on May 5. Gayle Wald says the musician would be tickled by the honor.

“When people would ask her about her music,” Wald says, “she would say, ‘Oh, these kids and rock and roll — this is just sped up rhythm and blues. I’ve been doing that forever.’ ” ---Bruce Warren, xpngospelroots.org

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was one of the great blues gospel singers and she was one of the pioneer gospel artists who crossed over into the secular world.

She was among the first Black gospel artists to appear on television, and one of the first realize the showbiz possibilities of this new and wide-reaching medium, which was well suited to display her glittering wardrobe and the red-orange wig she occasionally wore when she hosted her own syndicated gospel music television show from 1962-1964.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe is incredible - both her singing and her guitar playing are fantastic. She performs gospel songs infused with r&b and blues, and was transforming gospel and bringing it to the public long before the well-known pioneers Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, The Staple Singers, and James Brown. They took gospel intensity and song forms and turned them into soul and r&b in the fifties and sixties; Tharpe is more gospel-based, and began her recording career in the thirties - though she recorded a bit of more straight-ahead blues - and got into a lot of hot water with the gospel community for her trouble! She continued to play well into the late sixties. The Proper label 4-cd box set is excellent without a doubt, but I actually prefer this because the fidelity is so outstanding. For anyone who loves music from that magical time before rock'n'roll, soul, and r&b became the 'thing,' Tharpe's music is a must, and really something of a revelation. Unfortunately she's one of American music's sorely overlooked foundations, so do yourself a favor and hear her music! ---echoes of empires, amazon.com

One of the premier gospel singers (and guitarists) of the early-mid 20th century, the late Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s music experienced a resurgence in popularity in the new millennium. Although more comprehensive compilations exist, this tidy collection from Acrobat is a fine introduction to Tharpe’s soulful take on gospel, blues, and even jazz. The title track is warm, inspirational ballad rendered in a sing/speak voice that hits right at the center of the heart. ---Rovi
