The Harvest Jazz and Blues crowd certainly weren't upset to learn that the Tedeschi Trucks Band will be returning this year. Since appearing two years ago at the Festival when the husband-wife duo had first put together the live group, its grown into a big deal, winning a Grammy this past year for the excellent Revelator album, and become a tour de force performing group, festival favourites everywhere. What began as a good way for the couple to spend more time with each other has become a major artistic statement in the duo's already stellar careers.

Susan Tedeschi is the lead singer in the group, Derek Trucks the lead guitar player, and then look it, it's an onslaught of sound, with the huge, 11-piece group featuring a full horn section, and the dynamic Burbridge brothers, Otell from the Allmans on bass, and Kofi on keys. The double-drummer Allman system is also borrowed, but this is a much more varied group. On this new live double-disc, you'll find tight songs, right up to 16-minute workouts. There's a tiny bit of jamminess (I just coined that), but mostly it's pretty structured even on the long workouts. Everybody gets a chance to shine, even Kofi moving out from the keyboard for a groovy and jazzy flute solo in Nobody's Free. The horns get to play lots, and it's certainly not a show-off time for Trucks, although he does give the crowd lots of strong solos to keep them happy.

Tedeschi moans, wails and gets smooth too. I do find the live show quite different from the studio album, which was a very soulful affair, showcasing their interest in Stax sounds. Live, they are a wilder bunch. There are those rich moments though, such as their cover of the Lovin' Spoonful favourite Darling Be Home Soon, which sees some nice cooing from the background singers in the band, lovely Isley Brothers harmonies, and the horn arrangement is beautiful. Other cover surprises are a radically-reworked and uptempo version of Everybody's Talkin', and a big workout on Stevie Wonder's Uptight. ---Bob Mersereau, cbc.ca

The couple Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks have independently made a name for themselves in the music world. Blues guitarist Trucks did so at the tender age of nine, as a child prodigy on the guitar. At the age of twelve he had already worked with Buddy Guy. Apart from having his own Derek Trucks Band, he toured with the Allman Brothers Band for many years before becoming an official member, which he still is. It was during one of their tours that he met Susan Tedeschi, already known as a blues and soul talent. She has several Grammy nominations to her name and was the frontwoman of her Susan Tedeschi Band. In past years, the lovers often performed on each other's records and concerts and even fused their respective band members under the nomer Soul Stew Revival. They have since formed the Tedeschi Trucks Band, that they will bring to North Sea Jazz just after the release of the debut album of this extraordinary duo, Revelator. --- northseajazz.com

The Derek Trucks Band has grown into a finely-tuned big band, adding the guitarist's wife, singer Susan Tedeschi, to the masthead and front lineup, resulting in a fresh sound that eschews every blues and soul cliché that could be feared from such an ambitious project. All of the principles bring with them a loam of experience that informs every molecule of this music. Guitarist/vocalist (and fellow Allman Brothers Band alum) Warren Haynes, on his Man In Motion (Stax, 2011), has basically done the same thing with less memorable results. All walk the path of The Butterfield Blues Band, Electric Flag, and Blood, Sweat and Tears, in beefing up their sound and musical firepower.

Opening with the intricate and driving "Come See About Me," Revelator draws inspiration from the dual-drummer format of the Allman Brothers Band to lay down a layered thickness of rhythm and beat à la the late Richie Hayward, from Little Feat. Trucks contributes a slide guitar line, upon which Tedeschi paints on the soul, while the horn section fills in all of the blank spots, giving the performances great depth. Playing in an open tuning, Trucks demonstrates that only Sonny Landreth can play slide guitar comparably—but, while Landreth is technically near-perfect, he lacks the fire that Trucks consistently summons from the spirit of Duane Allman. ---C. Revelator is the long-awaited, song-oriented debut album by the husband-wife team of singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi and guitarist Derek Trucks. Filled with smoky, blues-dipped rockers and heart-stilling ballads that show off, respectively, the gutsier and softer side of Tedeschi's vocal ability, plus a series of emotive, story-telling solos shaped by Trucks's uncanny agility on slide-guitar, Revelator also serves to introduce the couple s new, 11-piece ensemble Tedeschi Trucks Band.

A dramatic leap forward for two of the music world's most dynamic performers, Revelator is a confident yet unforced triumph offering a cohesive vision: an idyllic, musical world in which the echoes of so many great traditions Delta blues and Memphis soul, Sixties rock and Seventies funk organically flow together, blending with an entirely original, modern sensibility.

In addition to the combined weight of Tedeschi and Trucks's equally renowned abilities, Revelator benefits from an impressive circle of talent that the two brought together. Trucks co-produced the album with multi-Grammy-winning engineer Jim Scott, whose genre-bending credits include popular albums by the Dixie Chicks, Johnny Cash, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Both Tedeschi and Trucks co-wrote the album's twelve new songs with an impressive list of experienced songwriters, including Jeff Trott, John Leventhal, David Ryan Harris and Sonya Kitchell; Gary Louris and Oliver Wood of the Jayhawks and the Wood Brothers, respectively; and old friends like guitarists Doyle Bramhall II and Eric Krasno (of Soulive), and band members Mike Mattison, Kofi Burbridge and Oteil Burbridge.

Most notably, Revelator features the newly formed Tedeschi Trucks Band, an eleven-member ensemble overflowing with talent and musical familiarity. Brothers Oteil Burbridge (noted for his years as bassist with the Allman Brothers Band) and Kofi Burbridge (longtime keyboardist/flutist with The Derek Trucks Band) have joined forces with a pair of drummers J. J. Johnson and Tyler Greenwell, trumpeter Maurice Brown, tenor saxophonist Kebbi Williams, trombonist Saunders Sermons, and harmony singers Mark Rivers and Mike Mattison. (Additionally, Ryan Shaw and David Ryan Harris supplied harmony vocals to various tracks on the album, and Alam Khan adds his masterful sarod playing to "These Walls".) The fact that this aggregation includes so many musicians related by experience and blood clearly adds to the notion of Revelator as a true group album, the product of a musical family.

„Back to the River” jest już ósmą płytą Susan Tedeschi. Pochodząca z Bostonu Susan to prawdziwa blueswoman. Gra na gitarze, śpiewa, komponuje, a jeszcze do tego wszystkiego jest żoną znakomitego gitarzysty Dereka Trucksa (Allman Brothers Band, Derek Trucks Band). I proszę nie myśleć, że artystka cokolwiek sobie załatwia na skróty przy pomocy mężowskich układów! Jej muzyka to pełnokrwisty blues z właściwymi mu proporcjami ognia i melancholii. Jej pozycję potwierdzają też pojawiające się tu nazwiska. Na przykład tytułowy utwór napisał wspólnie z Tedeschi mistrz Tony Joe White. Artystka śpiewa niezwykle ekspresyjnie, chwilami przypominając to, co niegdyś robiła nieodżałowana Janis Joplin. Słuchając „Back to the River” z ulgą uświadamiamy sobie, że plastikowa papka „popularnych stacji radiowych” jeszcze nie zabiła prawdziwego grania.

BACK TO THE RIVER represents that phrase beloved by hardcore fans of any artist, "a return to form." Tedeschi is back to the hard-hitting, bluesy sound with which she made her name, and her joy at this stylistic homecoming is clearly audible; you can hear it both in the throaty abandon of her vocals and in the unfettered fury with which she digs into her guitar solos. While there's still a soul flavor present in some of the tracks here, it takes a back seat to the visceral, string-bending, blues-belting sound that will forever be identified as Tedeschi's true trademark.

This reissue of the Boston favorite's 1995 debut clearly highlights her greatest strength: her voice. Susan Tedeschi has been singing since she was 4 years old, and it shows; her voice has the power and control that comes from long experience. If her version of "Hound Dog" doesn't blow the top off of Big Mama Thornton's original, it's still a strong effort, and she's just as good with her own material. The title track--penned by Adrienne Hayes, guitarist for Tedeschi's band--is especially good, as the slow tempo allows Tedeschi to stretch her pipes a bit. Unfortunately, even by the release of Just Won't Burn, Tedeschi's guitar hadn't caught up with her voice, and the discrepancy is even more obvious here--there's a spark, but it doesn't quite catch fire. Still, there's no question that her heart's in the right place, and if her guitar work continues to improve, there'll be no stopping her. --Genevieve Williams
