Willie Dixon is one of the fathers of modern American blues, and had a profound influence on Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and countless others. This superb 1984 performance was recorded for FM radio broadcast at a tiny club at 7644 North Sheridan Road on Chicago's north side, and captures the great man in fine form performing a selection of self-penned classics. Willie Dixon has been called “the poet laureate of the blues” and “the father of modern Chicago Blues.” He was indisputably the pre-eminent blues songwriter of his era, credited with writing more than 500 songs by the end of his life. Moreover, Dixon is a towering figure in the history and creation of Chicago Blues on other fronts. While on staff at Chess Records, Dixon produced, arranged, and played bass on sessions for Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Litter Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson II, and others. In no small way, he served as a crucial link between the blues and rock ‘n roll. ---willie-dixon.com

Willie Dixon is the biggest name when considering Blues composer by its deepest and most essential meaning. Legacy of Mr. Dixon is so rich it could have been enough for generations and in fact it was used by his contemporaries and is still used by the generations that followed him for one simple reason, these blues are classics and without having at least some of them in repertoire artist bears great risk of failure.

This 1973 release is kind of reminder and tutorial to all those who forget or did not know who the real power was behind the uprise of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. Ten all-original compositions most of which became Blues classics and paved the way to the likes of Koko Taylor and Little Walter to name a few, are performed by the author who was not as eager of performing and recording as those who built career partly using his composing abilities. Mr. Dixon recorded rarely but these records are high-class.

As always, band is selected subtly. One of the most underrated Blues pianists, Lafayette Leake on piano; Carrie Bell twittering on harp; and Mighty Joe Young and Buster Benton on guitars. This composition of the band never was repeated and nobody knows what it would come out of such collaboration if any. One more time Willie Dixon's arranging and managing capabilities should be emphasized. And his singing, of course, deep-voiced, powerful, and influential, sustaining years and distances.

Willie Dixon's songs are masterpieces which laid foundation for future Blues. Originally released in 1973 on Ovation in vinyl format. --- Dimitri, amazon.com

As the main songwriter for Chicago's Chess label, bassist/singer Willie Dixon was one of the most influential and prolific figures in blues. Although he often served as a session player for other well-known musicians, his soulful presence was always felt, as revealed on this excellent 18-track collection which features Dixon performing with Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Otis Rush, and other blues luminaries. ---Rovi

Hidden Charms is a Superb Blues Album!...I can't figure-out why so many (so-called) Blues Lovers' would EVEN rate this fabulous Music as anything short of utterly ESSENTIAL!?!...You'd have to be deaf and dumb NOT to realize what an Awesome and Brilliant collection of THEE Master this LP is!!!...IF you L.O.V.E. the BLUES then I Highly Recommend this Jewell for your Treasure Chest and/or collection. I like every song on it. Some more than others, but, there isn't a 'bad' song on it. Excellent Guitar,Cash McCall, as well as Stunning Harp by Sugar Blue! (Some Girls LP, (Miss- You). Not to mention: Lafeyette Leake on Piano! Those who rate this LP anything short of Masterful are children in their understanding of the Blues at their F.I.N.E.S.T. ... Period! I couldn't Live without this Music in my Collection. ---Steven Dayvis, amazon.com

When Willie Dixon left his native Mississippi and traveled north to Chicago, he almost single-handedly dragged the blues with him into the modern era, giving the country blues a hard, new sheen with his deft songwriting, sturdy bass playing, and his considerable talents as a producer and arranger. This two-disc, 47-track set catches Dixon wearing all of his hats, with the first disc featuring him in the studio and in concert (including several live tracks with Johnny Winter) and the second spotlighting his bass playing and production work with the likes of Robert Nighthawk, Eddie Boyd, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Lowell Fulson, Bo Diddley, Willie Mabon, and Howlin' Wolf. What emerges is a well-rounded portrait and introduction to one of the major architects of the modern blues sound. ---Steve Leggett, Rovi

William James "Willie" Dixon (July 1, 1915 – January 29, 1992) was an American blues musician, vocalist, songwriter, arranger and record producer. A Grammy Award winner who was proficient on both the Upright bass and the guitar, as well as his own singing voice, Dixon is arguably best known as one of the most prolific songwriters of his time. Dixon is recognized as one of the founders of the Chicago blues sound. His songs have been recorded not only by himself, or that of the trio and other ensembles in which he participated, but an uncounted number of musicians representing many genres between them. They were written during the peak of Chess Records, 1950–1965, and performed by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Little Walter, influencing a worldwide generation of musicians. Next to Muddy Waters, he was the most influential person in shaping the post World War II sound of the Chicago blues. He also was an important link between the blues and rock and roll, working with Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley in the late 1950s. His songs were covered by some of the biggest artists of more recent times, including Styx, Bob Dylan, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Foghat, The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Megadeth, The Doors, The Allman Brothers Band, Grateful Dead, and a posthumous duet with Colin James.

This is one of Willie Dixon's best recordings ever. I'd put 10 stars on it if I could. I had the pleasure of seeing him open for John Lee Hooker at the Wax Museaum in Washington DC, and I rushed out to buy every Willie Dixon album, yes, vinyl, I could get my hands on. This one flows like honey on a warm day, and it IS as powerful as a mighty earthquake and a hurricane! Such as , "We can crush any country in a matter of weeks/but it don't make sense/we can't make peace." Or Flamin' Mamie in hell "got the little devils runnin up and down the walls/screamin save us daddy/she gonna love us all." Oh, the concert...Willie had two sons in the band and played this album front to back, then did all the songs Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters made famous back to back! And John Lee Hooker put us too sleep, the energy drop was so pronounced. ---George Barr "Blueshound"
