Willie Dixon has been called “the poet laureate of the blues” and “the father of modern Chicago Blues.” He was indisputably the pre-eminent blues songwriter of his era, credited with writing more than 500 songs by the end of his life. Moreover, Dixon is a towering figure in the history and creation of Chicago Blues on other fronts. Willie Dixon is the biggest name when considering Blues composer by its deepest and most essential meaning. Legacy of Mr. Dixon is so rich it could have been enough for generations and in fact it was used by his contemporaries and is still used by the generations that followed him for one simple reason, these blues are classics and without having at least some of them in repertoire artist bears great risk of failure.

This 1973 release is kind of reminder and tutorial to all those who forget or did not know who the real power was behind the uprise of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. Ten all-original compositions most of which became Blues classics and paved the way to the likes of Koko Taylor and Little Walter to name a few, are performed by the author who was not as eager of performing and recording as those who built career partly using his composing abilities. Mr. Dixon recorded rarely but these records are high-class.

As always, band is selected subtly. One of the most underrated Blues pianists, Lafayette Leake on piano; Carrie Bell twittering on harp; and Mighty Joe Young and Buster Benton on guitars. This composition of the band never was repeated and nobody knows what it would come out of such collaboration if any. One more time Willie Dixon's arranging and managing capabilities should be emphasized. And his singing, of course, deep-voiced, powerful, and influential, sustaining years and distances.

This is one of Willie Dixon's best recordings ever. I'd put 10 stars on it if I could. I had the pleasure of seeing him open for John Lee Hooker at the Wax Museaum in Washington DC, and I rushed out to buy every Willie Dixon album, yes, vinyl, I could get my hands on. This one flows like honey on a warm day, and it IS as powerful as a mighty earthquake and a hurricane! Such as , "We can crush any country in a matter of weeks/but it don't make sense/we can't make peace." Or Flamin' Mamie in hell "got the little devils runnin up and down the walls/screamin save us daddy/she gonna love us all." Oh, the concert...Willie had two sons in the band and played this album front to back, then did all the songs Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters made famous back to back! And John Lee Hooker put us too sleep, the energy drop was so pronounced. ---George Barr "Blueshound"
