During his stay in Rome in 1903, Feliks Nowowiejski, at the height of his fame after receiving the prestigious Giacomo Meyerbeer award, set out to compose an oratorio based on the novel Quo vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz. However, he was not the first composer who thought about a musical version of this captivating story from the times of Emperor Nero. Five years before, another Polish composer Emil Mlynarski, began working on his opera Ligia, which, however, remained unfinished. Although to this day at least six opera reinterpretations of Quo Vadis have been staged, none of them came even close to the achievement of the 26-year-old Nowowiejski in terms of the scale of artistic success. The score, consisting of five parts, shows some influence of great tableaux evoking the style of Meyerbeer’s grand opera; it also contains Liszt-style leitmotifs, impressive quasi-Handel choral parts and a modernized neo-Bach counterpoint, which is possibly an influence of Max Reger. ---arkivmusic.com

As the year 2016 was declared the Year of Feliks Nowowiejski by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, the philharmonic started an intensive information campaign to promote their patron. Apart from the opening ceremony of the Nowowiejski Year in Poland, which took place on 22 January 2016 in the concert hall of the philharmonic, there were other great artistic events: concerts of the oratorio Quo vadis: first on 30 June 2016 during the final event of the 50. International Festival of Organ Music in Cracow, and then on 28 August in the home town of Feliks Nowowiejski, Barczewo, where it was played for the first time. The works of the composer of Rota (The Oath) were included in the repertoire of the 70th jubilee season 2015/2016. Nowowiejski's name has fallen pretty much into oblivion but in his day he was a significant presence in Polish and indeed international musical life. He studied at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin and pursued his earlier career as an organist. He was a prizewinner: his Under the Banner of Peace won a London competition in the early years of the twentieth century. He met Dvorák and studied for a time with Bruch until 1906. His early major success was his oratorio Quo Vadis, premiered in 1907, which he conducted in Carnegie Hall in 1912. A more patriotic success was his song Rota, which in time became a second Polish national anthem. His life in Cracow was not unclouded by spats with a leading critic so he upped sticks to Berlin returning after war's end to take a leading role in the revivification of Polish culture and language after independence. His last years were difficult; he hid his manuscripts during the Second War and though he still composed Fourth Symphony, a Piano Concerto, he suffered a stroke and died in 1946.

Magdalena Adamek has scoured the surviving albums and manuscripts with penetrating editorial insight. She brings her accumulated experience to bear in these two volumes of the composer's piano music both volumes are available separately. Her playing is crisp, warm and inviting, though she has a tendency to push the tempi in the more substantial works. That said many of these pieces happily fall into the genre categories light music, salon or consciously paying homage to the shade of Chopin. Little here will give one a frisson or indeed intimations as to the big works for which he was famed. Certainly his smaller morceaux have some delicious moments but they are circumscribed pleasures and not to be taken at one go.

The Polish Dances are distinctly Chopinesque in flavour and probably written in the 1930s; to that one can add a certain amount of Szymanowski's influence. The First Ballade is one of the warmest and most immediately attractive things here, and once more steeped deep in the influence of Chopin. The Fourth has poetry and drama but one should perhaps turn in preference to the Mazurkas, which seem to me to be more comprehensively successful and to have a greater stamp of personality. We also have his 'Young Poland', London prize-winning march, Under the Banner of Peace, a jaunty affair. As an aside I should add that the rather haphazard programming means that we can't journey with any chronological certainty through his oeuvre. This is a pity as his later works were far better at assimilating the diverse influences he'd earlier accumulated.

Rather like his younger Polish colleague Józef Koffler, also championed by this label, Nowowiejski wrote a children's cycle. The Easy classical and contemporary dances for children doff the cap to Mozart and Chopin and are agreeable enough. We really need to turn to the second volume's E minor Mazurka to find the composer at his best strenuous and powerful but with moments of intense reflection. It would have been better not to have split the Mazurkas between volumes because they represent some of the most persuasive compositions here. The Threnody is similarly impressive it sounds like a piano reduction of a much bigger orchestral work. We end with the Praetorian's March from Quo Vadis. I hope we have the opportunity to hear his magnum opus in the not too distant future.

Recorded in a rather airless and unflattering acoustic these are nevertheless all first ever recordings and as such strongly to be welcomed. The best of him lies in the later works from the 1930s and those Mazurkas in particular. There may be a great deal of generic ephemera to wade through elsewhere but it's well crafted of its kind and the greater rewards are certainly there. ---Jonathan Woolf, MusicWeb International

A significant part of Feliks Nowowiejski’s works, particularly major pieces, remained in manuscripts and it went into oblivion soon after the composer’s death (1946), as if it were encoded in oblivion. This state of affairs remained until the recent years when a part of Polish music community began to recognise severe gaps in the knowledge about the works of our composers. It is also the ensemble of the Opole Philharmonic under the direction of Przemysław Neumann that makes a significant contribution to decoding Feliks Nowowiejski’s music. The present album, including symphonic pieces of the author of Oath, which have been rarely performed and are almost absent in the recording industry, is a testimony of it. These are extremely interesting, selected symphonic works, composed with uncommon panache, plenty of melodic invention, pompous climaxes and profound Romantic aesthetics. ---en.dux.pl

One of the joys of the CD age has been the opportunity to discover the works of composers rarely if ever programmed in the concert hall, sometimes with the hope that an audience for concert performances might be created through recordings. Many composers are interesting, sometimes by way of contrast with the recognised genius of justly famous contemporaries, but even among the interesting ones, there is often nothing sufficiently original to justify a sustained cult.

For most outside Poland, and, I suspect for many within, Nowowiejski is today relatively little known, and when he is known, then it is principally as a composer of oratorios and church music. But, on the evidence of this CD, there is very much more to him than that – he rises above the merely interesting to reveal himself as someone with an original and distinctive voice. I was glad to make acquaintance with his work and look forward to exploring very much further.

Notes for the recording – in English and Polish – are exemplary, outlining not only the composer’s life and works, but contextualising them against the turbulent history of Poland in the 19th and 20th Centuries. In a partitioned land, Polish nationalism was a difficult choice. By background, Nowowiejski was Prussian-born, and German was his natural language, not Polish. Yet, partly influenced by his parents, both keenly interested in Polish culture, he consciously chose the path of Polish patriotism – his song Rota, from 1910, was fiercely anti-German. His pro-Polish views made life difficult for him in the German academies (including Berlin and Regensburg, though principally the former, where he worked with Max Bruch). After the First World War, he settled in Poznań in the newly independent Poland. He spent the years of the Second World War mainly in Krakow.

Nowowiejski’s cause has not been helped by a dearth of published scores. Most of his works remain in manuscript – the Opole Philharmonic Foundation is responsible for providing the scores recorded here. The results more than justify the effort.

The earliest work, the Overture to The Return of the Prodigal Son, is very striking, demonstrating command of a large orchestra which includes celesta, organ and a large percussion section. An early work it may be, but the writing is both confident and impressive. Repeated listening reveals the strength of the underlying structure, and pacing in this performance is well-handled as the piece fades gently away.

The tone-poems, Beatrix and Nina and Pergolesi, similarly involve a large orchestra. Of the two, I marginally preferred Nina and Pergolesi, with its strong contrasts, often within the space of a few bars. The method is characteristic of the composer, with thematic growth through transformations rather than formal development. In technique rather than sound-world there are parallels with Mahler – perhaps a little of the world of the first movement of the Third Symphony.

The Legend of the Baltic Sea was very popular but went through much editing before achieving its final form. In the overture there are techniques reminiscent of the earlier works on the CD. As in Mahler, loud passages give way to chamber-like moments. There are some lovely moments for harp and solo violin.

The King of the Winds started life as an intended opera, but eventually became a ballet in nine tableaux. It is very impressive, with monumental passages contrasted with quieter moments.

Performances are committed and impressive. Nowowiejski is a composer I want to explore much further. There is a recording of Symphonies 2 and 3 (Dux 1446 - review) and The King of the Winds is available on a recent Warner Classics set, with Sinfonia Varsovia. The latter is recent and one of several new recordings If a Nowowiejski revival is happening, on the evidence of this CD, it is cause for excitement. ---Michael Wilkinson, musicweb-international.com

Wydana przez DUX płyta z dziełami symfonicznymi Feliksa Nowowiejskiego to kolejny wydany przez tę firmę album dedykowany temu kompozytorowi. Nie tak dawno temu ukazały się płyty z oratorium Quo vadis i z II i III Symfonią. Tym razem ponownie mamy do dyspozycji dzieła szerzej nieznane, grywane sporadycznie.

Krążek otwiera uwertura do oratorium Powrót syna marnotrawnego op. 3 z 1902 roku, studencka kompozycja Nowowiejskiego. Dzieło budzi mieszane uczucia – z jednej strony nie sposób oprzeć się barwnej i ciekawej orkiestracji, z drugiej – całość wydaje się nazbyt rozciągnięta i pozbawiona dramaturgicznego punktu kulminacyjnego.

Taki sam problem występuje w dwóch wczesnych poematach symfonicznych op. 17 z 1903 roku – Beatrycze i Nina i Pergolesi. Ponownie zwraca uwagę barwność orkiestracji z użyciem migotliwych dźwięków czelesty, harf i sekcji perkusji, ale ewidentnie daje się we znaki brak wyczucia dramaturgicznego. Całość jest ładna, eufoniczna, utrzymana w przystępnej, romantycznej stylistyce. Wiele tu pięknych, śpiewnych melodii, ale zawiedzie się ten kto szukać będzie w tej muzyce większej głębi. O wiele ciekawsza jest zwięzła i również ciekawie orkiestrowana uwertura do opery Legenda Bałtyku op. 28, pochodząca już z lat 20.

Jednak bez wątpienia najbardziej interesującym dziełem z tych zebranych na płycie jest uwertura do Króla wichrów. Wstęp ten nosi tytuł Wśród turni. Ciekawie brzmi początek, z głównym tematem prowadzonym w kwintach i oktawach. Oddawanie surowości tatrzańskiej przyrody udało się kompozytorowi i dało rezultaty ciekawe, charakterne i intrygujące, niepozbawione też pewnej głębi.

Mamy więc album z kompozycjami, które określić należy jako przejściowe. Jest to Nowowiejski z jednej strony osadzony jeszcze w tradycji romantycznej, a z drugiej łypiący już w stronę osiągnięć kolorystycznych impresjonizmu i harmoniki modernizmu. Nie są to kompozycje aż tak inspirujące jak II i III Symfonia, ale i tutaj odnaleźć można wiele ciekawych pomysłów.

Od strony wykonawczej i edytorskiej album prezentuje się przyzwoicie. Nie jest to może propozycja wstrząsająca, ale na pewno wartościowa i warta poznania. ---klasycznaplytoteka.pl

Currently, Feliks Nowowiejski is recognisable mainly as the author of music to Maria Konopnicka’s Oath, alternatively as composer of organ and oratorio music. His symphonic output, overshadowed by the works of Karol Szymanowski, who was composing at the same time, is rarely performed and has not been presented to the wider audience yet. The present album, thanks to the efforts of the Poznan Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Lukasz Borowicz, fills this gap in the image of the Polish music of the interwar period. We display on it the symphonies Nos. 2 and 3 by Nowowiejski (the Symphony No. 1 is lost). The first of the pieces, with extended percussion parts, is a genuine apology of rhythm, while the Symphony No. 3, dedicated to Iris, the goddess of rainbow, enchants us with ingenious instrumental solutions – colors of the orchestra. ---arkivmusic.com

Utwory symfoniczne kompozytora, organisty, dyrygenta i organizatora życia muzycznego Feliksa Nowowiejskiego, należą dziś do bardzo rzadko wykonywanych, przez co mało znanych szerszemu odbiorcy. Tymczasem związany z Poznaniem kompozytor słynnej "Roty", wśród zróżnicowanych gatunkowo, odznaczających się wysoką sprawnością warsztatu twórczego utworów, pozostawił po sobie symfonie które nigdy dotąd nie doczekały się nagrań opublikowanych na płytach. Tym większą atrakcją dla melomanów jest album "Feliks Nowowiejski - Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3" nagrany przez Poznańską Orkiestrę Filharmoniczną pod batutą odpowiedzialnego także za opracowanie rekopisów Symfonii, Łukasza Borowicza. Na płycie tej znajdziemy Symfonie nr II i III, bowiem jak wiadomo I Symfonia do dziś uważana jest za zaginioną, natomiast IV nazywana „Symfonią Pokoju”, nie została przez kompozytora ukończona.

Pierwsza z zamieszczonych na płycie symfonii, ukończona w 1938 roku, znana też pod tytułem "Praca i rytm", to utwór dzięki bardzo rozbudowanym partiom perkusji będący prawdziwą apologią rytmu. Do napisania utworu Nowowiejskiego zainspirowała podróż do Afryki Północnej i widok robotników pracujących do rytmu wybijanego przez bęben. Stąd motoryczny charakter centralnej części utworu i silne wyeksponowanie instrumentów perkusyjnych. Natomiast powstała w latach 1936 1940, pełna kolorystyki III Symfonia (dedykowana bogini tęczy Iris), to utwór mieniący się wyjątkowym bogactwem instrumentalnym i dźwiękowym przepychem. Silnie osadzona w estetyce neoklasycznej jednoczęściowa kompozycja (na płycie zindeksowana jako 4 ścieżki) obfituje w rozmaite nastroje; od fanfarycznych wzlotów, poprzez liryzm, groteskę, na wzniosłym finale zakończywszy.

Wykonanie jest przekonujące, a w zakresie wiernego odczytania intencji kompozytora, budzące zaufanie. Nie mając punktu odniesienia do innych rejestracji obu Symfonii, nagranie Poznańskiej Orkiestry Filharmonicznej jako pierwsze, okazać się może wzorcowym.

140-rocznica urodzin i 70-rocznica śmierci Feliksa Nowowiejskiego, to doskonała okazja do sięgnięcia po płyty ze znakomitymi wykonaniami jego utworów, przypomnienia jego przebogatej i różnorodnej twórczości, oraz dostrzeżenia ponadczasowych wartości pozostawionej przez kompozytora muzyki. ---Robert Ratajczak, longplayrecenzje.blox.pl

Warner Classics Poland presents two corresponding albums with the complete ballet music of Feliks Nowowiejski (1877-1946) – a German-born Polish composer, often compared to Wagner, Richards Strauss and Anton Bruckner. Two releases: King of the Winds op. 37 and Folk Paintings Op. 18 will be released on May 25th, 2018.

The albums recorded by the vigorous Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra together with the Polish Radio Choir under Sebastian Perłowski are world premiere studio recordings of Feliks Nowowiejski’s ballets: The King of The Winds op. 37 and The Folk Paintings op. 18. The composer and organist-virtuoso (born 1877 in Wartembork) studied in Berlin under Max Bruch. He moved to Poland after the first World War and became one of the most prominent figures of Polish music. Unfortunately, many of his works were destroyed due to the complicated 20th century history, and after his death in 1946, Nowowiejski became almost totally forgotten. Until very recently even the most prominent researchers of his music believed that his ballets were lost forever. However, it turned out that they were wrong. The scores were found in 2014 and then carefully recovered and edited under the supervision of Jan Nowowiejski , the composer’s son, who unfortunately passed away soon after the recordings were made.

The significant mark on this exciting artistic journey is this release, which shows to the musical world the emblematic works of one of the most unjustly forgotten composers of the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The style of Nowowiejski is rich and colorful, characterized with great orchestration craft and melodic invention. Feliks Nowowiejski, kompozytor i wirtuoz organów (ur. 1877 r w Wartemborku) studiował w Berlinie u Maxa Brucha. Przeniósł się do Polski po I wojnie światowej i stał się jedną z najbardziej prominentnych postaci polskiej sceny muzycznej. Niestety wiele jego dzieł zostało zniszczonych w wyniku burzliwej historii XX w. i po śmierci twórcy w 1946 r., Nowowiejski stopniowo popadł w niemal całkowite zapomnienie. Aż do niedawna nawet najważniejsi badacze jego muzyki uważali, że balety w swojej pełnej postaci utracone zostały na zawsze!
