<p>I had been a huge fan of both Kathleen Battle and Wynton Marsalis for many years, when I had the good fortune to see a PBS tv documentary on the making of this album. I was playing this album literally 3-4 times daily, so it was a delight to see the artistry and passion they brought to the recording. Not only do you see the artists working with great joy and humor in the studio, you also get to see Kathleen Battle give a recital concert in her hometown church in Ohio, singing the roof off! Talk about a homecoming....</p>
<p>The album opens with a technically stunning rendition of Handel's LET THE BRIGHT SERAPHIM, which displays Battle's great coloratura. Wynton Marsalis is a gorgeous match for her silvery top notes and crystal-clear diction. She is unmatched in her ability to bring out every glorious syllable. The most beatiful piece on the entire album, and it's not easy to choose just one, has to be ETERNAL SOURCE OF LIGHT. You will literally think you're surrounded by celestial light, her singing is that gorgeous. Again, Marsalis' trumpet is perfectly matched to her voice.</p>
<p>They really outdo themselves in the Scarlatti material; especially in the 7 arie con tromba sola (my favorites being SI SUONI LA TROMBA and MIO TESORO PER TE MORO) and SU LE SPONDE DEL TEBRO, which features gorgeous harpsichord....Stupenda.</p>
<p>It would be truly amazing if Battle and Marsalis would collaborate again. This is one of the most beautiful duet albums in any genre you'll ever hear. Bravo!!!! ---Eric McCalla, amazon.com</p>

<p>Battle and Perlman together in Bach sounds like a recipe for no uncertain sweetness and much stained-glass light. Prospective buyers are likely, though, to choose their purchase in this case as much, as it were, for the singer as for the song, so they will have a shrewd idea what to expect.</p>
<p>Among those expectations will be a decidedly virtuoso approach to the obbligato writing, and a doe-like purity of vocal inflexion. For Cantata No. 97's "Ich traue seiner Gnaden", Battle certainly also puts her trust in the soloist, whose little opening concerto paves the way for a gentle, effortless unfurling of the vocal line. The violin's pointed answers make it not only the equal of the voice in eloquence, but also set up quite a few demands for the voice in turn....</p>
<p>Not surprisingly, both Battle and Perlman are at their best in those arias which inhabit clearly recognizable expressive poles. In duet with an orchestral cello, Perlman provides a sombre prelude for Cantata No. 115's Passion-like "Bete aber auch dabei", to which Battle responds in suitably muted voice, and with a fitting sense of the long vision of the soul's self-preparation.</p>
<p>In the fiercely energetic "Jesus soil mein erstes Wort" from Cantata No. 171, on the other hand, Perlman rises splendidly to the ascending arpeggios and sequences, the cadential twists and turns of his dance, while the voice, making the most of the implicit "Wort/Fort" aural pun, sings with a new clarity and assurance which almost recalls the young Elly Ameling.</p>
<p>The oboe steps out of an always judiciously balanced and sprightly orchestral ensemble for Cantata No. 84's exuberant "Ich esse mit Freuden", and the trumpet sounds robustly, providing firm foundation for the vocal and instrumental pirouetting in Cantata No. 105.--- Gramophone [3/1992]</p>

<p>Battle and Perlman together in Bach sounds like a recipe for no uncertain sweetness and much stained-glass light. Prospective buyers are likely, though, to choose their purchase in this case as much, as it were, for the singer as for the song, so they will have a shrewd idea what to expect.</p>
<p>Among those expectations will be a decidedly virtuoso approach to the obbligato writing, and a doe-like purity of vocal inflexion. For Cantata No. 97's "Ich traue seiner Gnaden", Battle certainly also puts her trust in the soloist, whose little opening concerto paves the way for a gentle, effortless unfurling of the vocal line. The violin's pointed answers make it not only the equal of the voice in eloquence, but also set up quite a few demands for the voice in turn....</p>
<p>Not surprisingly, both Battle and Perlman are at their best in those arias which inhabit clearly recognizable expressive poles. In duet with an orchestral cello, Perlman provides a sombre prelude for Cantata No. 115's Passion-like "Bete aber auch dabei", to which Battle responds in suitably muted voice, and with a fitting sense of the long vision of the soul's self-preparation.</p>
<p>In the fiercely energetic "Jesus soil mein erstes Wort" from Cantata No. 171, on the other hand, Perlman rises splendidly to the ascending arpeggios and sequences, the cadential twists and turns of his dance, while the voice, making the most of the implicit "Wort/Fort" aural pun, sings with a new clarity and assurance which almost recalls the young Elly Ameling.</p>
<p>The oboe steps out of an always judiciously balanced and sprightly orchestral ensemble for Cantata No. 84's exuberant "Ich esse mit Freuden", and the trumpet sounds robustly, providing firm foundation for the vocal and instrumental pirouetting in Cantata No. 105.--- Gramophone [3/1992]</p>

<p>This is a wonderful collection of oratorio and sacred music. Kathleen Battle shines in this album. Normally, I have found her singing to be less than interpretive, but not this time. These pieced suit her voices ideally, containing significant amounts of coloratura lines without getting too heavy. A particularly stiking addition to this collection is the gospel piece sung a cappella. A brilliant album-I strongly recommend it! --- "puccinigirl", amazon.com</p>

<p>This is a wonderful collection of oratorio and sacred music. Kathleen Battle shines in this album. Normally, I have found her singing to be less than interpretive, but not this time. These pieced suit her voices ideally, containing significant amounts of coloratura lines without getting too heavy. A particularly stiking addition to this collection is the gospel piece sung a cappella. A brilliant album-I strongly recommend it! --- "puccinigirl", amazon.com</p>
