While maintaining her status as a television star, Dinah Shore made a series of classy albums for Capitol Records between 1959 and 1962. On this, the fourth of her five LPs for the label, she again teamed with André Previn, who had arranged and conducted her earlier album, Somebody Loves Me. This time, Previn took to the piano, joined only by an occasional rhythm section for another set of ballads (or, as the sleeve note put it, "songs in a mid-night mood"). They included standards by the Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart and others, and Shore handled them with more than her usual warmth; she smoldered. The result was a concept album that ranks with some of Frank Sinatra's. Maybe sales were negligible because the Shore of this album was hard to reconcile with the grinning hostess on TV, but it probably had more to do with the overexposure TV gives any regular performer, causing the public to look for her on the small screen rather than on the record shelves. In any case, that made this album a lost gem. --- William Ruhlmann, Rovi

One of America's most popular entertainers long after her mid-'40s commercial peak, Dinah Shore was the first major vocalist to break away from the big-band format and begin a solo-billed career. During the '40s, she recorded several of the decade's biggest singles -- "Buttons and Bows," "The Gypsy," and "I'll Walk Alone" -- all of which spent more than a month at number one on the Hit Parade. After launching a television variety series in 1951, Shore appeared on one program or another, with few gaps, into the 1980s.

Born in rural Tennessee, Dinah Shore was performing on Nashville radio while still a teenager. Her professional career later took her to New York, where she sang with Xavier Cugat. After failing auditions with Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey however, she decided to simply become a solo singer. Shore signed to Bluebird, and recorded several hits during 1940-41, including "Yes, My Darling Daughter," "I Hear a Rhapsody" and "Jim." Her first million-seller came in 1942 with the prototypical blues crossover nugget, "Blues in the Night." Later that year, she moved to Victor and hit big with "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" and her first number one hit, 1944's "I'll Walk Alone." Shore also began appearing in films, including 1944's Up in Arms and 1946's Till the Clouds Roll By.

The late '40s proved to be her most popular era for recording. Between 1946 and 1949, she hit big with several songs, including "The Gypsy," "I Love You for Sentimental Reasons," "Anniversary Song," "I Wish I Didn't Love You So," "Buttons and Bows" and "Dear Hearts and Gentle People." Though her records didn't chart as high during the '50s, Dinah Shore enjoyed even more exposure with her top-rated variety show, The Dinah Shore Chevy Show. For many, Shore's opening and closing every show with "See the USA in your Chevrolet, America's the greatest land of all" practically defined the '50s. Her Chevrolet sponsorship lasted until 1963, but she returned in the '70s with a new format, the daytime talk-show. During the 1980s, she began performing once again, but returned to television once more with a series that ran for two years. She died of cancer in 1994. ---John Bush, All Music Guide

The general rule on releases from the Proper label is to go with the box sets for the most complete perspective (at a cheap price) but stay away from the single-disc Proper Introduction series, which often mislead neophytes on just what a "proper introduction" to most artists should be. The volume on Dinah Shore, however, is a solid look at her hit-making prime, which began early (for band singers, at least), in 1940, and found her ensconced in the Hit Parade throughout the next 15 years. Her biggest hits -- "Anniversary Song," "The Gypsy," "Buttons and Bows" "I'll Walk Alone" -- are all here, though they're sprinkled throughout the disc. Virtually all of her second-tier performances are also here, including "Shoo-Fly Pie and Apple-Pan Dowdy" and "Blues in the Night" (but, surprisingly, not "Dear Hearts and Gentle People"). The sound quality is good but not great, making Proper Introduction a solid compilation of Dinah Shore's early career. ---John Bush, Rovi

On March 1, 1917, Dinah Shore was born as Frances Rose Shore in Winchester, Tennessee. While a student at Vanderbilt University, Shore started performing her own short program on a Nashville radio station. After completing her degree in sociology, she moved to New York City in 1938, intending to pursue a career as a singer.

Shore soon landed a job singing on a New York radio station called WNEW. Recording success took a little longer, but in the early 1940s she began to release hits such as "Jim" and "Blues in the Night." During World War II, Shore often performed for the troops, singing songs like "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" and "I'll Walk Alone," which reached No. 1.

Shore also began to appear in films in the 1940s. She worked with Gypsy Rose Lee in Belle of the Yukon (1944) and was seen in Till the Clouds Roll By (1946), a biographical musical about Jerome Kern. However, Shore did not take to film work and only appeared in seven movies.

In the late 1940s, Shore continued to enjoy success on the charts. Her hits from this period include such songs as "I Love You for Sentimental Reasons" and "Buttons and Bows."

In 1951, Shore's self-titled variety show made its debut; it was the start of what would turn out to be a long-running career on television. The Dinah Shore Chevy Show began in 1956. The program, which featured Shore singing "See the USA in your Chevrolet," achieved even greater success and stayed on the air until 1963.

Shore's television career evolved over the years, but her warm personality consistently charmed audiences. In the 1970s, she became a popular talk show host with a series of shows: Dinah's Place (1970-74), Dinah! (1974-80) and Dinah and Friends (1979-1984).

Shore's last talk show, A Conversation with Dinah, aired on the Nashville Network from 1989 to 1991. One of television's most popular personalities, she won 10 Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award and a Golden Globe during her career. ---biography.com
