The New Orleans Revivals is coming into its own, especially in its now second home - Europe. Based in Poland, the Vistula River Brass Band is the best example of European Dixieland. Among its 9 members there are two car mechanics, a graduate in hydrobiology, a technician mechanic, a teacher and the sociologist. Traditional jazz, the earliest jazz music of the worlds, has been owning its freshness and vitality to amateurs. Od 1968 roku grają swoją ukochaną muzykę - stary, dobry jazz tradycyjny. Niewiele jest takich miejsc, gdzie nie grywałaby "Vistula". Zespół ma w swej kolekcji 12 LP i 8 CD, które mogą być przykładem dobrze wyważonego, stylowego, a zarazem żywiołowego brzmienia starego jazzu. Muzyka "Vistuli" jest swingująca, pełna temperamentu, poparta znakomitą stylowością solówek, w których krytycy cenią sobie wyjątkową wierność kanonom jazzu tradycyjnego.

Brzmienie partii zespołowych porównywane bywa z brzmieniem orkiestr amerykańskich okresu międzywojennego. Doświadczenie estradowe muzyków sprawia, iż koncerty na żywo to wspaniały, niezapomniany show. Dorobek nagród "Vistuli" stanowią: dwukrotnie główna nagroda - "Złota Tarka" 1976 i 1977, "Złoty Koń" w Belgii, "Gold Washboard" w Anglii oraz "Złota Tarka" na Festiwalu Old Jazz Meeting - Iława 1998 w uznaniu zasług dla rozwoju polskiego jazzu.

Chociaż zespół zbliża się do jubileuszu czterdziestolecia, jego żywiołowego i witalnego stylu nie naruszył ząb czasu. Cieszą swoim graniem publiczność gdziekolwiek występują. "Przy Vistuli noga musi chodzić" powiedział niedawno pewien rodak ze "sznapsową chrypką".

Bands like the VRBB are few and far between when it comes to longevity. Come to think of it, they have already been on the job for two decades. The ties that bind are their common interests, love of jazz, care for the old style, mutual respect and accomplishments. The history of the band reads a little like a Horatio Alger case. A group of avowed jazz enthusiasts from all walks of life, musicians all but by vocation rather than school training, band together to play old time jazz, rough it through the tough beginnings, stick together through thick and thin, lose a few musicians, win a few and with the sky-is-the-limit motto through it all and quite a few records under their belts, finally make it big touring Europe. Their music has its origins in the ragtime of the 20s, which fascinated the likes of George Gershwin as much as Stravinsky. They prefer the subtly balanced arrangements and improvisations of that music to the unrestrained Dixieland Jazz, which means that theirs is the music of New Orleans and Chicago, where the massive sound of brass and march-like rhythms dominate. Consequently, they do without flamboyant show-offs, complications, the "sweet sound" of the saxophone of the swing era, unfazed under the pressure of the tyrannical modernists. The leaders of the ensamble are the pianist and arranger Jerzy "Watson" Zebrowski and Bohdan Styczynski, the trumpeter. This album by veteran ensemble Vistula River Brass Band presents the versatility of the Polish Jazz scene, which at all times presented the entire scope of Jazz music, from Ragtime to Avant-Grade, all of them on a very high artistic level. The ensemble was formed in the late 1960s by drummer Jerzy Wieckowski, who remained the leader for many years. They were basically an amateur ensemble, as most of the nine members had regular jobs, but they played like pros, winning many traditional Jazz competitions and recording two albums for the Polish Jazz series, of which this is the first. Stylistically they remained close to the very early days of Jazz, playing mostly music associated with New Orleans and Chicago in early 20th Century. The material on this album comprises only of standards, except for the bonus track, which was composed by the pianist of the band Jerzy Zebrowski. The level of performance is absolutely excellent all the way through and every Jazz fan should be able to enjoy this music for what it stands for: quality and fun!
