<p>Due out June 5 on Mack Avenue Records, ‘Compared To That’ will be bass player Brian Bromberg’s 20th solo collection. Including eight of his own compositions, a ten-piece horn section, a full orchestral string section and a prodigious collective of supporting musicians this is an album that will appeal both to fans of contemporary jazz and those who allude to having a more straight ahead disposition. With the likes of Randy Brecker, George Duke, Mitch Forman, Jeff Lorber, Gary Meek and Tom Zink all involved, ‘Compared To That’ was recorded over two frenetic days and provides the overriding impression that here is a group of musicians at the top of their game and having fun.</p>
<p>A case in point is the dazzlingly swinging title cut which showcases a variety of jazz styles in the way only a few can. Fortunately Bromberg is one of them and from the intensely jazzy ‘Rory Lowery, Private Eye’ to a swinging take on the Chicago hit, ‘Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?’ everything is done to the highest standard imaginable.</p>
<p>With little more than piano and Bromberg’s distinctive bass ‘If Ray Brown Were A Cowboy?’ is a fine example of how less can sometimes be more and although the lilting melody of ‘Forgiveness’ provides a tranquil moment that is truly to savor, Bromberg is quickly ‘back in the swing’ with the brass drenched ‘I’m Just Sayin’.</p>
<p>If the title ‘Hayride’ suggests that country music might be on the agenda then that assumption would be correct. Despite jazz and country being somewhat strange bedfellows Bromberg makes it work to perfection and the funky kind of big band thing he generates with ‘A Little New Old School’ is enhanced in no small measure by tenor sax from Gary Meek. Elsewhere the complex ‘The Eclipse’ will satisfy jazz purists everywhere but the eclectic nature of ‘Compared To That’ is again demonstrated with the closing number, a daring re-imagining of the Rick James 1981 hit ‘Give It To Me Baby’. Bromberg employs Brazilian musicians and the Rising Sun Orchestra on six Jobim compositions and six Jobim-inspired originals. Unlike Bromberg's Hendrix release, these arrangements stick close to Jobim's original versions of "One Note Samba," "Wave," "Triste/Desafinado," "Corcovado," "Once I Loved," and "The Girl from Ipanema." Each connects with the music different associations and impressions. Little Tune awakes memories of a stay in Salvador de Bahia. A sense of lightheartedness.</p>
<p>Tristefinado showcase anew Bromberg's vitality on acoustic bass concurring with one of the above mentioned guitarists. Corcovado, meaning "hunchback" in Portuguese, is a mountain in central Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Atop this mountain is enthroned the statue of Cristo Redentor, the landmark Rio's. Airto's wonderful presentation is followed by Bromberg's bass like a bumblebee, while the guitar perfectly fits the orchestral strings.</p>
<p>The uplifting Cha Chika Chika Boom crackling sparks as the Brazilian Carnival. Isn't It Beautiful? comes with a large orchestral use. Great musicianship and arrangement. Latin American guitar and orchestra blend into a superb sound structure on Ray Of Sunshine. Gary Meek's flute can share just delicate accents.</p>
<p>Talia is a musical realization of the swaying walk, women makes so attractive. The contemporary jazz piece Ellen is dedicated to the jazz executive Ellen Cohn. Of course, on an album that is dedicated to Jobim, Girls of Ipanema cannot be missed. Bromberg's bass performance is embedded in a traditional concert, which is pleasantly standing of by some solos.</p>

<p>Respect is no stranger to Bromberg. Born in Tucson, Arizona in 1960, he initially followed his father and older brother in playing the drums. After struggling with cello in elementary and junior high school, Brian switched to bass at the behest of a teacher and took to it immediately. From age 14-18, he ‘shredded’ relentlessly on the instrument becoming proficient enough to land gigs 5 to 7 nights a week. At 18, he got his first major gig as a member of tenor sax legend Stan Getz’s band and since then has played acoustic and electric bass with hundreds of artists ranging from Horace Silver, Carmen McRae and Eddie Harris to Lee Ritenour, Nancy Wilson, Teena Marie and Dudley Moore.</p>
<p>“Bromberg Plays Hendrix” is an homage from one virtuoso to another. Brian's take on classic Hendrix tunes is nothing short of astounding. He makes the songs his own while keeping with the spirit and raw emotion of the originals.</p>

This gem documents the debut recording of bassist/producer Brian Bromberg on acoustic bass, using the same 300-year old instrument he played while touring with jazz giant Stan Getz at age 19. Recorded in 1991 the project has been re-mixed and re-mastered, sounding as fresh as the day it was recorded.
