Jeff Golub was happily playing lead guitar with Rod Stewart and doing sessions in New York when the solo bug bit him in 1994. The result was Avenue Blue, a solo guitar debut that did very well with commercial smooth jazz stations. His follow-up is called Naked City, and the grooves are as economic as the previous record, but this time Golub steps up the funk a little more. The mid-tempo title song will draw early airplay attention, but spirited tunes like "Nitpickin'" and "Funky Is As Funky Does" will draw clean comparisons to Booker T. & the MGs in the feelin' good department. Rick Braun returns to co-produce and sit in, while Golub explores his soul and jazz-rock influences. "Blues For You" is a great Smooth Jazz album, which shows why Jeff Golub has established a fine reputation as an exquisite guiter player and jazz musician. His guitar playing takes an aesthetic cue from the great exponents of the instrument, especially Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Lee Ritenour, and Larry Carlton, among others. He is quite capable of playing straight-ahead bop and for sure he has all the skills for it. But like any creative soul musician he is willing to embrace influences and ideas from any genre that passes him by, adding a fresh and acutely contemporary aspect to his playing.

On this album, which wires definitely towards the blues, Jeff Golub's fine style is perfectly suited to relaxed Smooth Jazz. The result is a soulful blend of jazz and modern electric rock/blues. The album features Shawn Pelton on drums , Tony Garnier on bass, and Kenny White on keyboards to round out the rhythm section. Rick Braun, Kirk Whalum and Jon Clearly also join in. For the first time, you will find some vocal tunes : in fact the band adds their own special magic alongside guest vocals from vocalists Billy Squier on the track "Everybody Wants You", Mark Cohn on "I Don't Worry About a Thing", Peter Wolf on "Rooster Blues" and John Waite on "Lost Mind".

The album exudes mastery with his virtuoso guitar solos and the production and sound are top-notch "Blues For You" will appeal to lovers of Blues/Soul and Smooth Jazz, catch a master at work. My highlights: "Fish Fare", "Rooster Blues" and "Everybody Wants You".

In its review of Jeff Golub's 1999 release Out of the Blue, Jazziz magazine boldly asserted that the guitarist's innovative style transcends typical smooth jazz boundaries, enthusiastically comparing him to Eric Clapton and Robben Ford -- two of the greatest guitarists of all time. But there is more to Golub than rock and blues. Throw in the influences of Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix, Les McCann, and Cannonball Adderly, add magical pop melodies and improvisations, and it's clear why Golub's been one of the genre's most popular performers since the mid-'90s. Playfully keeping what he calls a "beatnik funk vibe" throughout, his GRP debut Dangerous Curves perfectly captures this multitude of influences along with the energy and spontaneity of Golub's unforgettable live performances. Golub produced the album with veteran drummer and GRP/Verve marketing exec Bud Harner, who came up with the idea of creating a live club party feeling and loose, casual gig atmosphere featuring some of Golub's favorite musicians -- Mitch Forman (keyboards), Lincoln Goines (bass), Steve Ferrone (drums), Dave Woodford (sax, flutes), Lee Thornburg (trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone), Peter White (acoustic guitar), Kevin Savigar (Hammond B-3), and Luis Conte (percussion). Golub's instincts never stray too far from his trademark jazz/blues base, from the brass-infused bebop-influenced blues of the title track to the restless and blistering funk bounce of "Another Friday Night." His dynamic mood swings cover a lot of intriguing territory, going wildly Latin on "Lost Weekend" and retro-soul for "No Two Ways About It," which seamlessly intertwines Forman's Rhodes and Savigar's simmering B-3. On the seductive "No Two Ways About It," Peter White's unmistakable, high-toned acoustic breezes dance jubilantly in and around Golub's tougher edges; the contrast brilliantly showcases the many faces of smooth jazz. Golub wrote or co-wrote most of the material on Dangerous Curves, but carefully chose a handful of unique covers to create new arrangements for "(That's) Mr. Magic (To You)," a meditative tribute to the late Grover Washington, Jr.; "Soul Serenade," a melancholy take on King Curtis' '60s blues hit recorded by Golub and company at 2 a.m.; and Smash Mouth's alternative hit "Walking on the Sun," which Golub approaches from a moody, atmospheric, Doors-like angle. ~ Jonathan Gidran

Guitarist Jeff Golub's previous outing, Dangerous Curves, edged away from the R&B format toward a more rock approach. Do It Again revisits the soulful sound that Golub has made his own. The former Rod Stewart sideman has taken a break from composing this time out and chosen a batch of classic covers, displaying the same exquisite taste evidenced in his playing. Having had a hit with the Average White Band's instrumental "Pick Up the Pieces," he returns to the well for "Cut the Cake," and while he's at it, grabs their underappreciated "If I Ever Lose this Heaven." To inform anyone wondering where he garnered his influences, Golub gives us tunes by the masters: James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson. As always, his playing demonstrates the three Ts of all great musicians: the aforementioned taste, as well as in-the-pocket time and distinctive tone. If the record doesn't "rawk," it certainly grooves, and the solo on Eddie Harris's "Cold Duck Time" definitely pushes the boundaries of polite. Jeff Golub is a contemporary jazz guitarist with 6 solo albums and 3 CD’s as the leader of the instrumental band “Avenue Blue”. Before becoming an instrumentalist, Jeff worked as a sideman to a number of very successful rock and pop artists. He’s probably best known for his work with Rod Stewart, who he played with from 1988 until 1995 performing on 4 albums and 5 world tours as well as recording the live DVD “One Night Only” live at Royal Albert Hall. Born in Copley Ohio, Jeff started playing by emulating 60’s blues rock guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix ect.... Then, following up on the artists that these musicians sighted as their inspiration, he delved deeper into the blues listening to Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy and anyone named King ( B.B.,Albert and Freddie).

Jeff was in his teens when he first heard a Wes Montgomery record. This moment set him on a whole new course which led him to study at Berklee Music College in Boston. From Boston Jeff Moved to New York in 1980 where his first major gig was with rocker Billy Squier. Jeff appeared on 7 albums and 3 world tours with Billy. He released his first solo recording, “Unspoken Words” for Gaia records in 1988 but really embraced his role as band leader and instrumentalist with the release of “Avenue Blue” in 1994 for Mesa Bluemoon/Atlantic records.

Soul Sessions presents Jeff Golub's attempt to recreate the '60s and '70s recording sessions where musicians played live together in the studio rather than the modern way of recording each separately. It makes for a more lively Golub album than usual and does overcome the overly slick and lifeless production that so many smooth jazz albums suffer from. But it's getting harder and harder to lump Golub with other smooth jazz artists as his albums become funkier and more soulful affairs than the competition offers. It's difficult not to think of late-period Wes Montgomery while listening to the opening "Boom Boom," and when Ricky Peterson's Hammond B-3 shows up here and there it pushes the album into the soul-jazz category. Soul Sessions mixes in some satisfying pop with a sunny cover of No Doubt's "Underneath It All," and the Golub original "Can't Let You Go," with Mindi Abair and Journey's Steve Perry guesting on vocals respectively. Marc Cohn's vocalizing on Jesse Winchester's "Isn't That So," and Luis Conte's focused percussion are also highlights. The album falls prey to smooth jazz's cliches only when saxophonist Richard Elliot sleepwalks through "Playin' It Cool," and Abair and Perry are given nothing more than their respective songs' titles as lyrics. Otherwise, the musicians' interaction is satisfying, but Golub's discography now just cries out for a live album. ~ David Jeffries

The posthumously released all-star Jeff Golub benefit album, The Vault, brings together reworked and previously unreleased versions of songs the guitarist recorded prior to being diagnosed with the rare brain disease progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) in 2014. A debilitating condition, PSP robbed Golub of his eyesight and left the adept, genre-bending blues and jazz musician unable to play his guitar. Tragically, complications from the disease also led to his death in January 2015. Prior to his passing, however, several of Golub's longtime friends and collaborators, including trumpeter Rick Braun, music executive Bud Harner, and producer/engineer Steven Miller, assisted Golub in compiling these tracks. Golub then handpicked many of his favorite artists to add their own contemporary style to the recordings and create something fresh. Although many of the songs on The Vault, such as "Funky Is as Funky Does," off 1994's Avenue Blue and "Groanin'," off 1999's Out of the Blue, will be familiar to Golub's longtime fans, these are not the same tracks featured on the original albums. On the contrary, these are alternate versions reworked with newly recorded additions from such artists as Dave Koz, Mindi Abair, Kirk Whalum, Boney James, Jeff Lorber, Gerald Albright, Peter White, Richard Elliot, and others. Released on the heels of a live benefit concert held in New York City to raise funds to pay for Golub's expenses, proceeds from sales of The Vault also go to Golub's family.
