<p>By 1981, after six years of steady recording, Chico Freeman had gained a strong reputation as a flexible reed player able to play both avant-garde and fairly straight-ahead jazz. For this straight CD reissue of a Contemporary LP, Freeman doubles on tenor and bass clarinet in settings ranging from a quartet to a sextet. Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis (then just barely 20-years-old) is in superior form during his four appearances, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson is on all six songs, and also in fine form are pianist Dennis Moorman, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Ronnie Burrage; percussionist Paulinho Da Costa guests on one tune. The music is comprised of originals by Freeman, Hutcherson and McBee that, although based in the foundations of the past (Freeman's "Embracing Oneness" is dedicated to Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk), also looks forward. --- Scott Yanow, Rovi</p>

Utilizing an unusual instrumentation (flutist James Newton, pianist Kenny Kirkland, vibraphonist Jay Hoggard, cello, bass, drums and two percussionists), Freeman infuses his five challenging -- but generally logical -- compositions with rich tone colors and shades. <p>AACM saxophonist Chico Freeman, who blew everyone away in the '70s with albums like Kings of Mali and Beyond the Rain, has produced a substantial body of recorded works over the years while devoting much of his time and energy to the highly demanding art of education. His appearance at Jazzfest Berlin 1999 in humble collaboration with Swiss trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti and Reto Weber's Percussion Orchestra was preserved and presented to the public by Double Moon Records in 2006. In addition to Weber, the multi-national troupe consisted of Muthuswamy Balasubramoniam, who played mridangam, Mustapha Tettey Addy on African percussion, and Djamchid Chemirani, who specializes in the Zarb, a Persian frame drum also known as the Tombak.
