<p>Fans of over-the-top piano playing: this album’s for you. Richie Beirach should probably be a far bigger name than he is. A classically trained virtuoso, he has worked with Stan Getz and Chet Baker and also enjoyed fruitful collaborations with guitarist John Abercrombie and saxophonist Dave Liebman, whilst also focusing his own deeply personal solo projects.</p>
<p>Another frequent collaborator – the violinist Gregor Huebner – joined Beirach on the 25th and 26th August 2012 for two joint birthday gigs (Beirach’s 70th and Huebner’s 50th) at Birdland, alongside a very strong lineup: Randy Brecker on trumpet, George Mraz on bass and Billy Hart on drums.</p>
<p>The music they produced on those two nights is quite unlike anything this writer has ever heard before. There are elements of classical, bebop, Latin and rock, but you never know what’s coming down the track next, and the fusions are novel without ever becoming corny.</p>
<p>Beirach’s playing is exhilarating, outrageous and – refreshingly – not perfect. He’s not at all afraid of ‘out’ notes. At times he makes even Michel Petrucianni and Gonzalo Rubalcaba seem understated. On ‘Around Bartok Bagatelle #4’, his piano intro sounds uncannily like a string quartet, and he later quotes from Wayne Shorter’s ‘Speak No Evil’. Huebner’s violin tone is silky smooth yet somehow ethereal, and he even throws in a little Vaughan Williams for good measure.</p>
<p>On ‘Elm’, Beirach reaches inside the instrument to produce some dissonant string-picking, before a stirring melody emerges underpinned by strong, sometimes obtuse harmony reminiscent of Brad Mehldau’s work. Brecker’s solos throughout are reliably strong and stable, always a pleasing addition, while the violin/trumpet frontline is original, piquant and occasionally funny, particularly on a uproarious version of Coltrane’s ‘Transition’ which turns into a wall of sound after Beirach’s crushing solo over a brutal one-chord vamp.</p>
<p>A few slight reservations: poor Billy Hart sounds like he only has one very distant mic placed around his drums – the snare is mushy and the cymbals washy. Also the CD is mastered to within an inch of its life – it’s way too loud, with the tonal range in danger of disappearing completely. To właśnie ich działalność zapoczątkowała przed laty trend sięgania przez jazzmanów po dzieła muzyki klasycznej. Jednym z najbardziej innowacyjnych przedsięwzięć obu muzyków wraz z kontrabasistą Georgem Mrazem była seria albumów "Round About ..." wypełnionych jazzowymi transkrypcjami utworów Beli Bartoka, Federico Mompou i Claudio Monteverdiego.</p>
<p>Z okazji zbiegających się okrągłych 70-urodzin Beiracha i 50-urodzin Huebnera, wytwórnia ACT przygotowała nie lada niespodziankę. Sięgnięto po nagrania z dwóch koncertów, jakie miały miejsce w sierpniu 2012 roku w legendarnym nowojorskim klubie Birdland. Na scenie poza stałym współpracownikiem Georgem Mrazem towarzyszyli im wówczas: Randy Brecker (trąbka) i Billy Hart (perkusja). Materiał z jakim zmierzyli się wówczas artyści to repertuar obejmujący jazzowe standardy: "You Don't Know What Love Is" Gene'a de Paula i "Transition" Johna Coltrane'a, transkrypcja "Siliciliany" Johanna Sebastiana Bacha, wariacje na temat "Bagatelle #4" Bartoka oraz dwie własne kompozycje.</p>
<p>Długie, rozbudowane koncertowe wykonania zachwycają improwizacyjnym rozmachem i pełnymi żaru genialnymi solówkami każdego z instrumentalistów. Dla trójki współpracujących z sobą na co dzień muzyków, konfrontacja z dysponującym wyjątkową techniką Breckerem i intuicyjną dynamiką Harta, stanowiła nie lada wyzwanie, ale też okazję zagrania podczas dwóch wieczorów w Nowym Jorku, jednych z najlepszych klubowych koncertów w swej karierze. Doskonale się składa, że koncerty wówczas zarejestrowano i materiał po blisko pięciu latach doczekał się ogólnodostępnej publikacji. Najdłuższym, a zarazem zdecydowanie jednym z najpiękniejszych utworów na płycie jest kompozycja Richiego Beiracha "Elm". Pierwotnie, ten wydany przez wytwórnię ECM w 1979 roku na tak samo zatytułowanej płycie utwór, trwał zaledwie 6 minut. Tutaj pięknie rozbudowany fantazyjnymi partiami wypełnia ponad 18 minut krążka, nie tracąc pierwotnego uroku, a zyskując zupełnie nowe jeszcze piękniejsze oblicze.</p>

<p>Although somewhat underrated, Richie Beirach is a consistently inventive pianist whose ability to play both free and with lyricism makes him an original. After studying classical piano, Beirach switched to jazz. He studied at Berklee and the Manhattan School of Music, and took lessons with Stan Getz, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette. Beirach played electric piano while with Dave Liebman's Lookout Farm in 1974, but afterward mostly stuck to acoustic piano. He teamed up with Liebman on many occasions (including the early-'80s group Quest) and has recorded frequently since the '80s. Among his many jobs as a sideman were important stints with Getz, Lee Konitz, John Abercrombie, and Chet Baker, and Beirach has played music ranging from hard bop to totally free. His classical training can sometimes be heard in his more advanced improvisations, along with the sensitivity of a Bill Evans. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide</p>
