Master groover Euge Groove is back with yet another sterling effort, Got 2 Be Groovin’, to be released next week and sure to find its way to “Chart Toppers Row.”

With speciaEuge Groove CDl guests and friends like flutist Althea Rene, world renowned guitarists Paul Brown and Peter White, American Idol star vocalist Elliot Yamin (who’s certainly beginning to make his rounds in the studios of our big names – he is also featured on the newly released Rick Braun CD Can You Feel It), and vocalist Chanel Haynes, the saxman pours out his distinctive style over tracks influenced by the likes of great ones like James Brown and The Blackbyrds – not to mention some special inspiration to dedicate one track, “Miss Bane,” to his wife.

The CD drips cool all over the place beginning with the solidly convincing lead track “Forever And A Day,” which is an acknowledgement of Shakespeare in Groove’s special way. The track features flutist Rene and has a catchy saunter to its hook. It’s followed by the totally nasty-funky title track aimed straight at the James Brown vibe with tight horns and the Hammond B3 tossed in the mix very effectively. Sweat-soaked energy personified.

The previously mentioned “walk with me, talk with me” sensuous mid-tempo laid-back track “Miss Bane” had to meet with the approval of the saxman’s wife. Full of seduction and charm and a great hook, it’s loaded with the love message.

More of that solemnly sweet vibe awaits you in the gospel-tinged track “Rain Down On Me,” featuring the coolest Englishman in contemporary jazz, Peter White. Says Groove of the track, “I associate this song with God and it is about asking for a cleansing of the soul. “It is something I beg for from time to time.” The track can’t be described any better than that for it does grab you in a way as to indicate that something more than a slow, smooth, and tender groove is what the saxman was after. No, there is a strong call to and for something else. Cleansing of the soul is dead on.

More goodies are in store for you here, including “Groovin’ Up Hip Street,” the snappy up-tempo “Homie Grown” featuring guitarist/producer Brown, and the two flawless vocal offerings: One by Yamin (the striking cover of Skylark’s classic “Wildflower”) and the other, “In Love With You,” a powerful and beautiful slow-tempo Groove original which simply overflows with heartfelt soul from the mighty pipes of Haynes who, at certain points, reminds you of the ageless superstar Gladys Knight.

Like many of his artist friends, Groove has a hard time finding the words “failure” or “mediocrity” in his dictionary or vocabulary. This piece of art proves it again. ---Ronald Jackson, thesmoothjazzride.com

Euge Groove -- a pseudonym for saxophone journeyman Steve Grove -- began playing piano in the second grade and turned to the saxophone at the age of nine or ten. His teacher gave him a classical education on the instrument, which he followed at the University of Miami's School of Music, where he became interested in jazz. Upon graduation, he initially remained in Miami doing sessions and playing in bands such as Expose, where he can be heard on the group's 1987 number one single "Seasons Change." He then moved to Los Angeles and joined Tower of Power, remaining with the group about four years. Following this experience, he freelanced, doing sessions and working in backup bands, his clients including Joe Cocker, Eurythmics, the Gap Band, Huey Lewis & the News, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Aaron Neville, Eros Ramazotti, and Richard Marx. His saxophone appeared on Marx's Top 20 pop and number one AC hit "Keep Coming Back" in 1991. At the end of the '90s, Grove developed the persona of Euge Groove, a corruption of his real name, and recorded a demo that attracted the attention of various labels. This demo soon landed him with Warner Bros. Records. Euge Groove, his debut album, was released in May 2000. At the time, the saxophonist toured in Tina Turner's backup band. He followed up with 2002's Play Date featuring the singles "Slam Dunk" and "Rewind." In 2004, Grove moved to Narada for the '70s pop-soul inflected Livin' Large. Grove stuck with the '70s vibe for 2005's Just Feels Right and then incorporated a more gospel approach for 2007's Born 2 Groove. He moved to Shanachie for 2009's Sunday Morning. In 2011, Grove returned with his seventh studio effort, the fittingly titled Seven Large on Shanachie. ---William Ruhlmann, Rovi

An industry veteran who first got his start as a session player for pop artists in the '80s, smooth jazz saxophonist Steve Grove (aka Euge Groove) marks his 16th year as a solo artist with his tenth studio album, 2016's Still Euge. This is Groove's fifth album for Shanachie, following 2014's Got 2 Be Groovin', and once again finds him handling the production duties. The result is a laid-back album with Groove's supple saxophone guiding the listener on a journey that never feels rushed. These are lush, if economic arrangements, built around light percussion rhythms, sinewy basslines, and a liberal mix of piano and keyboard. Cuts like the lead-off "Twelfth Night" and the finger-snapping "Let's Chill" are classic instrumental Euge numbers, while the sensual Groove-penned ballad "Love, Passion and Joy," sounds pleasingly like a relaxed smooth jazz take on Lenny Kravitz's "It Ain't Over 'til it's Over." Elsewhere, Groove showcases the talents of several guest artists, bringing guitarist Chuck Loeb on board for the bluesy title track and letting guitarist Peter White add his sparkling color to the sultry slow jam "Another Perfect Moment." Also welcome is singer Rahsaan Patterson, who lends his urbane vocal talents to the '90s-style R&B of "Much Love." Similarly, vocalist Oleta Adams adds some weighty resonance to the latter half of the album with her languid turn on the romantic "Flower." A warmly produced album that touches upon all of Groove's trademark sounds from soulful balladry to instrumental R&B jams, Still Euge is a more than apt title. ---Matt Collar, AllMusic Review
