Few famous singers have, like Vera Lynn, lived to enjoy their own centenary, but one such was Bea Wain whose 100th birthday fell on 30 April 2017. 78 years before that event Bea was voted the Number One female band singer in Billboard magazine college poll of 1939 – ahead of the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Mildred Bailey! Aided by a suitably sparkling personality, she covered the spectrum of popular music through ballads, jazz and blues in a warmly expressive but understated swing style. And record buyers responded by giving her 25 big hits with the Larry Clinton band ... every one of which is included in this, Retrospective’s centenary tribute (plus a bonus of her single major hit as a solo artist: Kiss the Boys Goodbye).

Of Bea’s 20 Top 10 hits, four made No.1: Cry, Baby, Cry, My Reverie, Heart and Soul and Deep Purple, while another ‘jazzed-up classic’, Martha, was No.2. Her Larry Clinton debut, True Confession, You’re an Education, You Go to My Head and Summer Souvenir also made the top three – all these within a 14-month period! She was also the first artist to record Over the Rainbow (No.10). Her wonderful life finally ended on 19 August 2017 when she died just a few months after celebrating her centenary. Retrospective’s Heart and Soul now takes us back to her 1938 heyday when Bea Wain poured her ‘heart and soul’ into so many fine recordings. ---prestomusic.com

Bea Wain's gorgeous voice is marvelously reproduced and celebrated on Jasmine's My Reverie, a fabulous compendium of classic big band recordings dating from 1937-1941. Backed by the orchestras of Larry Clinton, Artie Shaw and Leonard Joy, this charming woman demonstrates her ability to handle each and every song with uncontrived style and finesse. Her version of Harold Arlen's "Stormy Weather" is an immaculately rendered rite of passage. Even Hoagy Carmichael's long-suffering "Heart and Soul" becomes a delectable treat when sung by Wain. Songs of a romantic nature undergo a magical transformation; "Deep Purple" and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" become arrestingly beautiful, while "Dancing in the Dark" might well cause susceptible listeners to abandon all worldly attachments and responsibilities in order to worship the voice of Wain by playing this one song -- "Dancing in the Dark," words by Howard Dietz, music by Arthur Schwartz -- over and over again for the rest of time. ---arwulf arwulf, Rovi
