Bill Evans did not record too many collaborations with other artists outside of his own trios, probably because few could hold their own in the presence of his intensely emotional improvisations. Well known are his fine recordings with Jim Hall and the album he made with Toots Tiellemans - Affinity. Far less so is this session with Jeremy Steig, son of the more famous cartoonist William Steig. Jeremy's main efforts were in the Jazz Fusion field which was in vogue in the late sixties and early seventies. This recording attests to his astonishing ability in the straight ahead jazz genre. More importantly, the level of his emotional expression at least puts him in Evan's musical ball park, and Evans,in turn, seems to be inspired by Steig's breathy and adventurous solos. The original album was tough to find, so this reissue is very welcome, particularly with so few jazz flautists currently active. Highly recommended. --- Andrew (Denver, Colorado), amazon.com

Other than four piano solos from April 4, 1962, this set was pianist Bill Evans' first recordings after a hiatus caused by bassist Scott LaFaro's tragic death in a car accident. The first of two meetings on record in a duo format with guitarist Jim Hall, the collaborations are often exquisite. Both Evans and Hall had introspective and harmonically advanced styles along with roots in hard-swinging bebop. There is more variety than expected on the fine set with some cookers, ballads, waltzes, and even some hints at classical music. Recommended. [Some reissues include four bonus tracks, including two alternate takes and previously unheard versions of "Stairway to the Stars" and "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You."] ---Scott Yanow, Rovi

There's some mystery about the source of this 'bootleg' recording. The CD packaging, which is short on relevant information, gives no producer or engineer credit. Nor does it specify the location of the concert from which the tracks come. It's credited to the Evans-Gomez-Morrell trio of 1969 but I came across the suggestion, on a Bill Evans web site, that the date is more likely to be a few years later. I have several of the tracks on a French "Le Jazz" CD (titled 'Quiet Now') which gives Amsterdam as the concert venue, but another suggestion on the web site is that the remaining tracks might come from a different concert. Probably all this only matters to Evans specialists; to my ears the quality of the playing and the recording is consistent enough for all the pieces to be credibly from a single concert, and if they are not, your enjoyment of the music is unlikely to be affected.

Is it worth buying? I would say emphatically: yes - mainly for four reasons. 1. It captures the trio in good form, full of spirit and vitality in the faster pieces, but with Evans also typically concentrated and lyrical in the slower pieces. 2. In about 60 minutes playing time there's a good range and variety of material, with warm, tuneful mid-tempo pieces ("Emily", "Sugar Plum", "A Sleeping Bee" and "Very Early") striking a nice balance between the lively faster numbers ("Autumn Leaves", "Nardis" and "Twelve Tone Tune") and the slower ballads. 3. The ballads are especially well done. There are poised and well-shaped readings of the Evans favourites, "Some Other Time", "Turn out the Stars", and "Quiet Now" and a particularly eloquent "What are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" which for me is one of his very best ballad performances - it's a lovely example of how he could make the piano sing, and he sustains the piece through its changes of moods and feelings as if on a single breath. Every Bill Evans fan should hear this track. 4. For a live, "bootleg" album it is notably well recorded, the trio being captured with good fidelity and balance. It sounds as if Evans had a particularly good piano for the concert, and maybe it was partly this that inspired him to such committed playing.

The piano sound is especially well served by the recording, with a greater range and fullness of tone than Evans often received even on some of his better-known albums: his mid-to-low registers are nicely resonant and the occasional high register flourishes come across without distortion.

Legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans is most often thought of as a "trio" player, as most of his albums have been piano/bass/drums, with the occasional solo or duo album. But he did record a select few albums with orchestras, and that's what makes SYMBIOSIS a special and unique entry in Evans' hugh catalog. Recorded in 1974, it was released in 1994 on CD for the first time. Further, this albums contains no standards or Evans originals--the title piece is a multi-part suite composed, arranged and conducted by Claus Ogerman (who also collaborated with Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra, among many others).

The album runs the stylistic gamut: there are moments of Philip Glass-like minimalism (!), samba-flavored big-band passages, echoes of the early 20th century Russian composers, Third Stream jazz, lush yet slightly ominous string arrangements and '70s film music. Throughout, Evans, alternating between acoustic and electric pianos, shimmers and entrances with his inventively lyrical solos. Not your "typical" Bill Evans album--but that's what makes SYMBIOSIS such a fine, gently challenging listen. ---Rovi

After more than a decade as one of the pianist’s most sympathetic bassists, this was Eddie Gomez’s last recording with Evans, a trio set with drummer Eliot Zigmund recorded in 1977 and released after Evans’ death in 1980.

Evans never stopped searching for new ideas. He might be faulted for repeatedly looking for them in the same tunes, but this program is quite varied, including Johnny Mandel’s “Suicide is Painless” (the theme from M.A.S.H. ); Michel Legrand’s title track; Gary McFarland’s waltz “Gary’s Theme,” complementing Evans’ own “B Minor Waltz (For Ellaine),” composed for Evans’ wife; and “We Will Meet Again (For Harry),” Evans’ tribute to his brother.

In Evans’ hands, melodies and time signatures are often more whispered, more shadowed, than stated, as in the opening “B Minor Waltz (For Ellaine)” and the somber, reflective title track, which blossoms, after Gomez’ mid-song solo, like dogwoods on a mid-May morning. Evans boasted such a unique, unmistakable touch—emotional and beautiful and even soft, but never sweet. (Gomez is pretty amazing himself on “M.A.S.H.,” laying down the foundation rock solid yet pushing the music forward, too.)

Among this reissue’s bonus tracks, “Without a Song” is about as ebullient as you’ll ever hear this pianist, and “Freddie Freeloader,” the one track on Miles Davis’ landmark album Kind of Blue where Evans did not play, presents the rare sound of Evans on electric piano.

As a rule, Evans could pick up the program from an elementary school chorus festival and play it inventively and beautifully. This set is no exception. ---Chris M. Slawecki, allaboutjazz.com

This oddly packaged CD compilation issued by the European label Gambit is a bit misleading, as it combines titles that appeared on several different releases, though none of the performances actually come from a concert. Most of the material is representative of third stream experiments popular for a time in the late '50s and early '60s, with Bill Evans in the role as a hired hand rather than leader, the role that falls either to conductors Gunther Schuller or George Russell, with most of the tracks originating from a Columbia LP titled Modern Jazz Concert and having reappeared in various incarnations with other selections in earlier reissues. Russell's impressive modern big band scoring of his "All About Rosie" is easily one of the highlights, with terrific ensembles and solos. Charles Mingus' "Revelations" is rather ominous, often suggesting the influence of Igor Stravinsky. The last three tracks are from an unrelated live Newport Jazz Festival Verve recording by mellophonist Don Elliott, who leads a quartet with Bill Evans, bassist Ernie Furtado, and drummer Al Beldini through merely average arrangements of three standards. The piecemeal gathering of these very dissimilar sessions for two different labels is troublesome, though the difficulty in acquiring this music make this edition a viable option for collectors. ---Ken Dryden, AllMusic Review

Although the Scott LaFaro-Paul Motian lineup of the Bill Evans Trio is generally considered to be the strongest, Chuck Israels and Larry Bunker make a strong case of their own on At Shelly's Manne-Hole, a 1964 release that finds the entire band in classic form. This particular trio may lack some of the sheer combustive force of the better-known lineup, but it is, if possible, even more sensitive, melancholic, and nostalgic than the previous band. The leadoff track, "Isn't It Romantic," is one of Evans' finest moments, with the gently swinging theme leading into a strong, if restrained, solo from Israels. Over Bunker's sensitive brush work, Evans comments briefly and beautifully on the theme before returning to the head. The band's readings of such classics as "'Round Midnight," "Stella By Starlight," and "All the Things You Are" are wonderful, but it is the lesser-known tracks, such as "Swedish Pastry" and the aforementioned "Isn't It Romantic," that makes this recording so valuable. Jazz is rarely as sensitive or as melodic as this. Another classic from Bill Evans and company. --- Daniel Gioffre, Rovi

This CD comes from a live 1975 concert by the Bill Evans Trio, which was broadcast by Radio Suisse in Switzerland. The pianist is in superb form, joined by longtime bassist Eddie Gomez and newcomer Eliot Zigmund on drums. The sound is excellent, without the annoying announcers or distortion, so this release could have very well been produced from the master tape itself. The set is wide-ranging, including both recent and older compositions by Evans, "Gloria's Step" (the best known work by former Evans sideman Scott LaFaro, who died far too young), along with standards like a buoyant "My Romance." The leader's treatment of his ballad "Turn Out the Stars" is rather upbeat, while his somewhat avant-garde composition "T.T.T.T." (also known as "Twelve Tone Tune Two") is a modern masterpiece. Perhaps the greatest surprise was Evans' inventive treatment of pop singer Bobbie Gentry's "Morning Glory." The only real problem with this CD is the sloppy composer credits on two numbers. This 1990 release may be somewhat difficult to find, but it is one of the better bootlegs issued under Bill Evans' name. --- Ken Dryden, Rovi

The legendary edition of the Bill Evans Trio featured impeccable drummer Paul Motian and ill-starred bassist Scott LaFaro; they made a handful of recordings for Riverside, but their only released live sessions came from their final engagement at the Village Vanguard in June, 1961. The release of these airchecks from four separate broadcasts is a welcome addition to their discography. There are three excellent takes of "Autumn Leaves," with the first kicked off by a long Scott LaFaro solo. Evans offers a stunning seven-minute "Nardis," which is possibly his earliest live recording of the piece that he would perform and record many more times. LaFaro delivers a compelling solo that only hints at the potential that was extinguished with his death in an auto crash following the famous 1961 Village Vanguard sessions. Even with the noise typically found in releases made from vintage radio broadcasts, this is a historic session worth the extra effort to locate. ---Ken Dryden, Rovi
