A piano duet recording, these two Europeans adopt a jazz stance in the romantic tradition with witty improvisations, occasional injections of raw passion, and a palpable empathy considering they had never played together before. It's a direct approach that is hardly simple or basic but should appeal to listeners of modern piano à la Bill Evans, ECM fans, and creative improvised music mavens. Each pianist does their solo take of "I Can't Get Started"; Van Den Brink uses widely spaced melody notes in a barely recognizable interpretation, while Pieranunzi is more pensive and clearly states the line and improvises more off of it. They do standards as the rambling, off-the-cuff intro, head, and bridge of "You & the Night & the Music," and a Duke Ellington medley comprising a sunrise serenade, a substantially improvised "In a Sentimental Mood," the two-beat driven "Caravan," the lightly stridden "Prelude to a Kiss," and the tango fired energy of the excited "It Don't Mean a Thing." Van Den Brink wrote the beautifully serene, dramatically romantic waltz "Woods." Pieranunzi wrote another two, a more upbeat waltz "O Toi Desir (pour Stefi)," with one pianist following the other via animation, a flying bridge, and some groove, while the multi-elemental "Si Peu de Temps" sports minimalist yet kinetic phrases, a swing section, meditation, marching, and frantic improv, a demonstration of real high drama. The pianists co-penned several songs, including the "Daedalus Suite," with the "Ouverture" fleshing out each other's notions; "Mosso" using ascending and descending crisscrossing and playful counterpoint; "Adagissimo" is like "Daedalus" rising in a pitch black, ominous mood; and "Short Tune," which displays brilliant orgasmic bursts and a resolution. The remaining four cuts are brief joint improvs, three are about a minute in length. "Two for Two" uses playful and bluesy tradings, "Hymn" is simply solemn, the three minute "Guitar Blues" has a probing stance and charcoal shadings, while "Pour Claude" is merely a slip of an improv that comes and goes in the mist. Wonder what Keith Jarrett, Kurt Ellenberger, or perhaps Chick Corea might think of this? Fans of those brilliant pianists should also gravitate toward this special recording. ---Michael G. Nastos

Enrico Pieranunzi is surely the sole pianist on the international musical stage able to claim a double affiliation with both Jazz & Classical music. With the collaboration of André Ceccarelli (piano) and Diego Imbert (bass), in 2016 he recorded his previous album « ménage à trois » which was already depicting the co-existence of his wife (the classical music) with his mistress (the jazz music). After the international success of this previous album « ménage à trois », it was natural that Enrico Pieranunzi, along with the same trio, devote his new album to Claude Debussy, one of his favorite composers, in commemoration of the centenary of the death of this fantastic artist. For such a jazz tribute, the Enrico Pieranunzi Trio also invited on some tracks two artists: David El Malek (saxophone) and Simona Severini (vocal).

Monsieur Claude - [A Travel with Claude Debussy] contains eleven tracks composed principally by Enrico Pieranunzi and inspired by the musical works of Claude Debussy, such as Valse Romantique, Ballade, La fille aux cheveux de lins that respectively become Bluemantique, L’autre ballade et Cheveux.

This musical journey with Claude Debussy is notable for its beauty, lyricism and delicateness. This album also demonstrates Pieranunzi’s absolute respect for Claude Debussy. In this regard Pieranunzi claims in his open letter (reproduced in the booklet): “the ultimate meaning of this letter simply lies in the desire to explain you the unconditional admiration that your art has always produced in me and my faithful musical friends”.

The cover of this album, a splendid illustration by Emiliano Ponzi, cultivates the mystery and the romance of Claude Debussy. Monsieur Claude - [A Travel with Claude Debussy] is certainly the most original jazz project dedicated to the memory of Claude Debussy. ---enricopieranunzi.it

Pianist Enrico Pieranunzi doesn't lead a working trio with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron (though they did tour Japan and recorded a live double CD there in 2004), but the two Americans enjoy the opportunity to record with the Italian leader whenever they visit Europe. Pieranunzi's diverse originals prove to be fertile ground for the trio. Johnson learned early on to be more than strictly a supporting player during his tenure with Bill Evans' trio, while Baron is equally accomplished in expanding his role. This is best heard in the insistent "No-Nonsense," a dramatic piece that is full of fire. The lighthearted "Peu de Chose" shows the influence of Bill Evans upon the leader, with Johnson's invigorating lines and Baron's whispering brushes adding to its buoyant air. Pieranunzi's snappy "Pseudoscope" is a delightful post-bop vehicle that sizzles, while the waltz-like bop work "Dream Dance" is lyrical with a wry touch. It is a safe bet that the three musicians enjoyed this meeting and look forward to their next reunion, wherever in the world it may take place. ---Ken Dryden, Rovi

The elegance that is Fellini Jazz serves as a tribute to both the great director and this assembly of musicians.

Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi continues to make make dream recordings that are so much more than all-star get togethers. This release follows two stellar sessions, Plays Morricone and Current Conditions (both on CAM Jazz), with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron.

Think of Fellini and the name that follows is Nino Rota, who composed music for the director’s films and also Coppola’s Godfather series. Rota draws inspiration from all music to form his unique brand of folk music. This band measures out the composer's vision in satisfying portions.

Besides the pianist, the attention-grabbing performances come from trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and saxophonist Chris Potter. Potter a mainstay in Dave Holland’s band, has full command of his horn at the tender age of 31. He tends toward a gentle but large voice, for example covering the ballad “Il Bidone” like fresh syrup over warm pancakes. The two versions of that particular track are done in the form of a ballad and a post-bop workout. Wheeler’s flugelhorn complements Potter with remarkable telepathy. His muted trumpet fills the tango of “La Città Delle Donne” as well as the railroad-patterned version of “La Dolce Vita.”

Pieranunzi finds it almost second nature to be partnered with drummer Paul Motian and bassist Charlie Haden. Motian, who played with Bill Evans, keeps that open, loose rhythm swirling behind Pieranunzi’s Evans-like clean vision. Haden and the pianist close the record with a sentimental duo of a Pieranunzi bitter/sweet original that could be the end piece to a "love found/love lost" movie.

The band keeps the music in the forefront here. They play the circus theme version of “La Dolce Vita” with a straight-face, Pieranunzi ringing in the track by comping around Potter’s soprano flight. The favorite always is the composition “Amarcord.” Played as a blues, it reveals Fellini’s bittersweet cinematic themes.

This is a sensational recording, worthy of its subject matter and its superb cast. ---Mark Corotto, allaboutjazz.com

Enrico Pieranunzi has long been recognized as one of the best European jazz pianists. This two-CD set with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron, not actually a regular trio but one whose members have worked together on a number of occasions over two decades, was recorded during a concert tour of Japan in the spring of 2004, with selections taken from a number of different venues. Three engaging extended trio improvisations upon familiar standards are the highlight of this collection, though the pianist's delicious jazz waltz "How Can You Not?" and moody ballad "If Only for a Time" leave lasting impressions. The trio also explores four originals by noted Italian film composer Ennio Morricone, highlighted by the dramatic interpretation of "Musashi," in which the pianist's lyricism is complemented by Johnson and Baron's sensitive accompaniment. The spirit of Bill Evans is often present in Enrico Pieranunzi's playing throughout this collection, though it never takes over his musical persona. Highly recommended. ---Ken Dryden, Rovi
