What a milestone: 40 years! It seems like yesterday that “Our First Record” changed the course of events, arriving in a flash at this latest release “In Stride”, with the same energy, the same desire to explore and keep in the game, consistently, and once again.

Their landing at CAM Jazz in 2003 with “Prime” marked a new beginning for this group with Moore, Towner, McCandless and Walker, and a renewed enthusiasm, confirmed with the previous “1000 Kilometers”, which enjoyed an abundance of global acclaim and prestigious acknowledgements, such as two Grammy nominations.

In Stride envelopes the entire history of this band; it enhances the compositional talent of these four musicians, magnifies their voices as soloists and, above all, recalls – in case you need reminding – that strange and magical alchemy which transformed this quartet into Oregon. "Moon Over Mind" may be in the jazz/fusion category but is not exactly typical of most other groups in the genre. Led by guitarist Ralph Towner, Oregon has had quite a career exploring their own unique and vibrant sound.

This album features a quiet, acoustic, contemplative sound with earthy world-fusion music influences. They occasionally remind me of Third Ear Band in certain rhythm sections but they don't really mimic other bands in their sound. Expect to hear lots of interesting things here: 12-string guitar, dulcimer, tabla, piano, oboe, clarinet, sitar, bass, classical guitar, flute, conga, and organ. No vocals. The title track is an 8 ½ minute dance between the piano and oboe, just lovely. "Gloria's Step" is a delightful acoustic guitar solo piece. Many of the songs on this album are musical duets; they feature two musicians soloing off each other. Dancing really is a good metaphor for the approach they employ here. What I like about the playing is that this isn't just a lot of technical wankery, instead the players are more concerned with where they are taking us.

The music is never rushed and it doesn't rock so this may bore you if you're looking for heavy fusion jamming. Meditative would be a more appropriate word to describe the mood here. Beautiful, spacious, perfect music for watching a sunset with drinks and a significant other. I like it very much and I'm not even a big jazz nut. The cover art nicely represents the music. It is exploratory, like looking out the window to the heavens and seeing something nearly indescribable. Very good stuff. --- Finnforest, progarchives.com

Oregon emerged in 1970 as a splinter band from the Paul Winter Consort. Its members each had experience in jazz, classical, and a variety of non-western musical styles, and were also multi-instrumentalists. Ralph Towner played standard acoustic and 12-string guitar, piano, a variety of electric keyboards, trumpet and flügelhorn. Paul McCandless' instrumental arsenal included oboe, English horn, soprano sax, bass clarinet, the musette, and tin flute. Collin Walcott handled most of the percussion duties on tabla and various African and Latin rhythm instruments plus sitar, dulcimer, clarinet, and violin. Glen Moore was the bassist, and also played clarinet, viola, piano, and flute. They suffered some snide comments labeling them the "Modern Jazz Quartet of the '70s" or "a white, European imitation of the Art Ensemble of Chicago." In truth, they were an excellent ensemble playing a hybrid style that wasn't exactly jazz, and certainly wasn't rock, but liberally quoted and borrowed from free jazz, Asian, African, European and pop music sources. They began on Vanguard, later moved to ECM, and also issued albums on Elektra and Portrait/Columbia. Walcott's death in a car accident in 1984 was a major blow but he was eventually successfully replaced by percussionist Trilok Gurtu. Oregon has worked at times with some guest players (including Zbigniew Seifert, Nancy King, and Elvin Jones). Their Elektra albums were reissued on CD by Discover, while their Vanguard and ECM albums have also been remastered and re-released on compact disc. Mark Walker, a master percussionist and drummer from Chicago, eventually replaced Gurtu, and became a full-time member of Oregon in 1996. Beginning with 2005's Prime, Oregon recorded for the CAM Jazz label. Family Tree appeared in 2012. ---Ron Wynn, Rovi
