Despite the title, this release is more subdued than its predecessors on the shelves, more tightly controlled, more conventional in instrumentation. Jean-Luc Ponty temporarily pulls back on electronic display for its own sake, even permitting some acoustic instruments to take the fore, and the recorded sound is drier and less lustrous. Nevertheless, Ponty's urbane Euro-sensibility can still be felt strongly in these carefully conceived and "orchestrated" jazz-rock compositions for his six-piece group. "Beach Girl," with its locomotive-driven chorus surrounded by folk-like passages, is the most memorable tune of the lot. If you can overlook the dated timbres of the ARP (a long-defunct company) synthesizers and the flat acoustics that place this music squarely within its decade, this music can still give pleasure to today's CD fans. --Richard S. An undisputed master of violin and a pioneer in the area of jazz-rock, Jean-Luc Ponty is widely regarded as an innovator who has applied his unique visionary spin to expand the vocabulary of modern music. Upon hearing “The Flying Frenchmen” in concert in the 1960s, the great American jazz violinist Stuff Smith said of Ponty, “He is a killer! He plays on the violin like Coltrane does on sax” (Encyclopedia of Jazz In The Sixties by Leonard Feather). In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle in 1976, Stéphane Grappelli said, “No, he is not a student, he is a great musician who invented a new style on the violin.” Ponty will bring his scintillating vocabulary to bear as the newest member of Return To Forever IV.

In 1976, Ponty was invited by Chick Corea to participate in the recording My Spanish Heart, which included the stirring piano-violin-trio number, “Armando’s Rumba.” Through the ‘70s and into the mid ‘80s, Ponty toured the world repeatedly and recorded 12 albums for the Atlantic label. He switched to Columbia in 1987, releasing The Gift of Time that year and following up with Storytelling in 1989. In September, 2009, he appeared as a guest of Corea, Clarke & White along with Chaka Khan for a special evening at the famous Hollywood Bowl, with Stevie Wonder showing up by surprise for a jam at the end. In 2010, Ponty toured with his band in the Caribbean, Europe and Russia and also as a duet partner with pianist Wolfgang Dauner in Europe. --- return2forever.com

This 2 LP set was a follow up to the 1966 Violin Summit concert, though JeanLuc Ponty is the only holdover from the earlier date. Ponty is clearly the dominant force, whether sharing the stage with the other violinists, which include blues player Sugar Cane Harris, the gypsy Nipso Brantner, and Michal Urbaniak, or featured in a solo or duo setting. Fully half of the release is dedicated to Ponty's potent compositions, including an unaccompanied exploration of "Flipping," a duet with Harris on "Astrorama," and "Violin Summit No. II," a finale featuring all four men. Harris and Brantner are effective on Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Workin'," while Ponty's duet with Urbaniak on "Nuggis" is not as memorable. Unlike Violin Summit, the rhythm section is fusion oriented, with keyboardist Wolfgang Dauner, guitarist Terje Rypdal, electric bassist Neville Whitehead, and drummer Robert Wyatt. Although there were two earlier dates led by violinist Jean-Luc Ponty (for Palm in 1963 and Philips in 1964), this was the first album to get much circulation. Originally recorded for the German Saba label and made available in the U.S. on this Pausa LP, Ponty is heard performing in a quartet also including pianist Wolfgang Dauner, bassist Niels Pedersen and drummer Daniel Humair. The music, much more straight-ahead than Ponty's output of the 1970s, is quite advanced, looking toward John Coltrane at times. In addition to "You've Changed" (one of the few standards ever recorded by the violinist), the band performs Denny Zeitlin's "Carole's Gordon" and three group compositions, including Ponty's "Suite for Claudia." Every eight years, it seems, Jean-Luc Ponty picks himself up, gives himself a good shake, and switches direction. In 1967, he made his first life-changing visit to the U.S.; 1975 found him going solo permanently as a jazz/rock icon; 1983 marked a switch to sequencer music; and in 1991, Ponty discovered African music. Taking advantage of the huge interest in African music in France, Ponty recorded his electric violin over the churning, hypnotic grooves of a coterie of visiting West African musicians in Paris, and the results, on Tchokola, are delicious. In one sense, not that much has changed, for while Ponty has thrown out the sequencers and electronic gizmos, his music remains grounded in repeated ostinato patterns -- those provided by the Africans. Ponty dabbles in all kinds of grooves -- the Nigerian juju, Cameroon's makossa (there is an especially swinging example of that on "Mouna Bowa"), the Afro-French Caribbean zouk, the sabar from Senegal, West Africa's mandingo, and a few others. On top of these, Ponty imposes his own distinctive melodic ideas on acoustic or electric violin, gingerly negotiating his way over the bumps of the tricky rhythms. At times, one feels that even this endlessly pliable virtuoso is not quite comfortable with these exotic idioms, but the music is so infectious that it usually sweeps him -- and us -- right along. --- Richard S. This entire LP conists of Jean-Luc Ponty's longest extended work, "Sonata Erotica," one of the most interesting works from his early days in fusion. Ponty's solos here seem far more inspired than his efforts in the 1990s. The violinist makes good use of delays, accompanying himself on the intense solo "Pizzicato Con Fucco E Con Echo." A number of passages were used in Ponty's earlier "Concerto for Jazz Violin and Orchestra," found on his record with Kurt Edelhagen (Vantage LP 504). Supporting musicians included Joachim Kuhn on Fender Rhodes, acoustic bassist J.-F. Jenny Clarke, drummer Oliver Johnson and percussionist Nana Vasconcelos. While this disc won't be considered essential to a lot of jazz fans, Ponty's followers will find it enjoyable. Later issued in the U.S. as Sonata Erotica by the long defunct Inner City label, this release has not yet appeared on CD. ---Ken Dryden, Rovi

Here is Ponty's radical break with his past, one that further tightened his control over his craft while ironically liberating his muse. In laying out his attractive new music on synthesizers and sequencers, emphasizing revolving ostinato patterns, Ponty rejuvenated his melodic gift, and as a result, even in this controlled setting, his violin solos take on a new freshness and exuberance. Except for two tracks, Ponty does without a formal rhythm section -- and on two other tracks, he goes it completely alone. Indeed, he does best of all when he has no one but himself to play with on "Computer Incantations for World Peace" and the lovely mood piece "Eulogy to Oscar Romero." Guest interloper George Duke (a fellow refugee from Frank Zappa's band) contributes a Minimoog solo to ""In Spiritual Love," where Ponty provides his own percussive backing on rhythm computer. Even if one grumbles on principle about the reduction of spontaneity in Ponty's music over the Atlantic years, the musical end here absolutely justifies the means. Don't miss it. ---Richard S.
