The Dale Cooper Quartet & The Dictaphones are returning with their 4th album called "Astrild Astrild". Like all of the previous albums, the band recorded the seven pieces at home in Britanny during several sessions between 2013 and 2016.

The characteristics of this full-length are classic drone soundscapes mixed with deep tone saxophone parts that became the band's trademark since the release of their debut album in 2006. Slowly paced, the new tracks are following the Quartet's basic structure and classical sound. Apart from that the new full length conceals more live takes including guitars, bass and Rhodes keys and even piano sounds are haunting for the first time at the end of 'Ocho Acenteur'. With these new elements the songs of "Astrild Astrild" are pushed further into a large tunnel of deafening rhythmic parts and field ambiant textures.

Vocals are a major element of the Dale Cooper Quartet & The Dictaphones' DNA since the second album "Metamanoir" (2011). Sometimes breathy, sometimes deep and often mysterious, Ronan MacErlaine, Gaëlle Kerrien and Zalie Bellacicco voices appear in the corners of the songs as ghostly figures or eerie characters.

The bizarre Dark Jazz cabaret has opened again. Finally, after years of waiting, the 2nd full length of the sophisticated experimental collective from France will be released. It features vocals of Gaëlle Kerrien (YANN TIERSEN) and all lovers of DAVID LYNCH movies, artists like KILIMANJARO DARKJAZZ ENSEMBLE or BOHREN UND DER CLUB OF GORE and blue cigarette smoke in dark bars will exult again.

Métamanoir sees the band shift from their smooth, minimal and instrumental landscapes on the debut record Parole De Navarre to a more lively and rich sound. Always based upon improvisation and sound research, the solo parts of their music are now embodied by vocals.

The Quartet invited several musicians and singers to record, giving a phantomatic sound with oboe, clarinet, whitewashed drones popping out of the songs. The sheer chants of Zalie Bellacicco – who appeared on the debut album - the deep tone of Ronan Mac Erlaine and the crystal-clear voice of Gaëlle Kerrien (Yann Tiersen's singer on his last Mute album) interlaces with the still dark jazz of the band.

Always influenced by classic 50s cool jazz and the more contemporary noise and experimental styles, the Quartet and his guests built a dreamy card castle who swing and grow deeply rooted in fierce strangeness of David Lynch movies.

Métamanoir has been recorded in their native Britanny country, deep west of France, a land swept by climatic inconstancy fed by wind, rain and mystery. A place which gives the music an overwhelming but beautiful darkness. --- dalecooperquartet.bandcamp.com

Nighttime. Outside, a storm goes wild. No sign of people in the streets, the rain pours down hard. Lightning pierces the dark sky, thunder rumbles. Somewhere, in the past, in the middle of a raging sea, down in an old ship’s squeaking bilge, or maybe far away on a haunted island, deep inside a secret mountain cave, a priest or maybe a witch doctor, performs some kind of ancient ritual—an exorcism or maybe an evocation.

Quatorze Pièces de Menace is Dale Cooper Quartet & the Dictaphones’ second album for the mighty Denovali imprint, and third in total. The images it conjures up are strange, eerie, mystical, and of course, menacing.

The music is not constricted by structures, it does not obey any rules. The flow is free, unpredictable and occasionally wild. At some parts dense and heavy, but mostly spacious and always gripping, the eleven compositions ebb and flow, stab and caress, shake and sedate, with assertiveness, consistency and wistfulness that convey a sense of a ritual and sometimes a prayer. Saxophones howl, guitars weep and saw, keyboards shimmer, odd effects strike with fierceness. Ghostly, lyrically-infused vocals bewitch, a trumpet croons, strokes of drums pound.

The textural quality makes the music sound as if it was recorded down in an old castle’s dungeon or haunted corridors. Diving into Quatorze Pièces de Menace requires a dark, stormy winter night, maybe even a cup of tea or a glass of wine and a few candles. It is certainly easier to dive into its depths this way. Easily digested? No. Worth being a part of a colorful music collection? Definitely. Dark jazz at its most hallucinatory form. --- igloomag.com
