1 All Mornin' Long
2 They Can't Take That Away From Me
3 Our Delight

Red Garland – piano
Donald Byrd – trumpet
John Coltrane – tenor saxophone
George Joyner – bass
Arthur Taylor – drums

On November 15, 1957, a quintet headed by pianist Red Garland recorded enough material for two records. This CD reissue (whose companion is Soul Junction) has a 20-minute version of "All Mornin' Long," along with briefer renditions of "They Can't Take That Away from Me" (a mere ten minutes) and Tadd Dameron's "Our Delight." More important than the material is that, in addition to Garland, the main soloists are John Coltrane and trumpeter Donald Byrd. Byrd was on his way to getting his sound together, while Trane, very much in his sheets-of-sound period, was already blazing a new path for jazz to follow. An excellent and often quite colorful jam session-flavored hard bop set. ---Scott Yanow, Rovi

If you are reading these reviews, congratulations. You've discovered the many joys of listening to Red Garland-the anytime pianist. You are probably aware of Red's charter membership in the first great Miles Davis quintet. It's probably how you came to delve further into his oeuvre.

Maybe you are aware that the Miles Davis group went into the Prestige Studios (actually Rudy Van Gelder's living room-where so many great Prestige and Blue Note albums were recorded) on May 11, 1956 & October 26, 1956 and, in two marathon sessions, whipped out 4 albums worth of material to complete his contractual obligations to Prestige that allowed him to go over to Columbia. Those are landmark sessions in the history of Jazz and all are peppered with the work of Red Garland and John Coltrane.

What you may not know is that on November 15, 1957, Red Garland had a marathon session of his own at those same Prestige studios, culminating in 2 1/2 albums worth of insanely quality material featuring his confrere, John Coltrane, a young, inspired (who wouldn't be...in the company of these two giants) Donald Byrd on trumpet and another superb rhythm section of George Joiner and Art Taylor.

This album is one. The other is Soul Junction. And the remaining tracks can be found on High Pressure. It is your duty to seek these out. You won't be disappointed. ---sekander, amazon.com

Red Garland is perhaps most famous for his unique block chord style and expressive, classically-influenced right hand lines. He was a prolific performer and recorded extensively throughout his career, with greats including Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Roy Elridge, Coleman Hawkins, and Lester Young.

Garland came from a family with no musical history, but his passion for music started early on and he started his musical journey by learning the clarinet and alto, he switched to piano when he turned eighteen. Steady practicing transformed him into an adept player in no time and he started his career in Boston, New York and Philadelphia, backing famous musicians of the time, including Charlie Parker, Lester Young and Roy Eldridge. He later joined the classical Miles Davis Quintet in 1955 along with John Coltrane, Philly Joe Jones and Paul Chambers.

From that point, there was no turning back for Garland, as he recorded his most famous music, the Prestige albums, with a prominent display of what has since become his trademark style. In 1958 Garland formed his own trio, leaving the quintet, and recorded with Jimmy Heath, Philly Joe Jones, Blue Mitchell, Ira Sullivan, and Leroy Vinnegar, though he continued to record with Prestige as well. He retired from performance for a number of years in the late sixties and returned back to Texas. A decade later, Garland emerged from retirement and again began to record, but his later work was different from his earlier recordings, and has not received the same critical acclaim.

Garlands most credited recordings are those he played with the Miles Davis Quintet and those from his own trio. The Prestige albums, The New Miles Davis Quintet, Cookin, Relaxin, Workin and Steamin with the Miles, each became famous in their time, and also paved the way to influence later jazz styles. --- jazz-piano.org
