Back in the 10-inch LP days, on February 14, 1955, tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims was in Los Angeles cutting a four-track session for Jump Records, a Hollywood label founded by Clive Acker and Ed Kocher in 1944 just after the first AFM recording ban was settled.</p> <p>The leader of the Jump date was Hall Daniels, a top studio arranger who went on to score the Beach Party movies and space age pop for Les Baxter.</p> <p>The four tracks recorded that day at Hollywood's Radio Screen shot 2011-06-05 at 8.25.48 PM Recorders Studio were The Way You Look Tonight, Nash-ville, You Don't Know What Love Is and Compatibility. Nash-ville and Compatibility were Daniels originals. And all four were brilliantly arranged by Daniels in typical West Coast linear fashion, with harmonies sliding back and forth behind smooth solos.</p> <p>Fortunately, Acker called for multiple alternate takes that Screen shot 2011-06-05 at 8.26.07 PM day—either to allow for run downs of the tracks or extra tape from which he could splice together choice solos. I say "fortunately" because all of the complete takes were issued. So if you love The Way You Look Tonight, as I do, you'll be wallowing in it—there are three in all.</p> <p>Now here's the big news: While this rare recording has been Screen shot 2011-06-05 at 8.29.01 PM out of print for some time and can't be found at Amazon or eBay, I came across it hidden at iTunes. It's under Zoot Sims' name, and it's listed incorrectly as Nashville—as though Sims had recorded a country album in California in 1955. --- jazzwax.com</p> <p>download: <a href="http://ul.to/g7jhexf1" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">uploaded </a> <a href="http://yadi.sk/d/C4UTZK2DRkYAB" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">yandex </a> <a href="http://www.4shared.com/zip/TGDMnBnRce/ZtSms-DkNhOct55.html" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">4shared </a> <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/download/c300hgia1u6gsye/ZtSms-DkNhOct55.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mediafire </a> <a href="http://www.solidfiles.com/d/f536c07fef/ZtSms-DkNhOct55.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">solidfiles</a> <a href="https://mega.co.nz/#!tNFXgRTL!MCA5ci4pd67eBXIiQ_9HQk8D4dEf6I69kdNZiz3JuOY" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mega </a> <a href="http://zalivalka.ru/145138" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">zalivalka </a> <a href="http://filecloud.io/7hifsykc" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">filecloudio</a> <a href="https://anonfiles.com/file/45f40d750836d3acb45676a6ba15bd94" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">anonfiles </a> <a href="https://www.oboom.com/YAAP1BXK/ZtSms-DkNhOct55.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">oboom </a></p> <p><a href="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/javascript:history.back();">back</a></p> <p><strong>Zoot Sims &amp; Dick Nash Octet - Nashville (1955)</strong></p> <p><img src="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/ObrMuz/Jazz/Zoot Sims/nashville55.jpg" border="0" alt="Image could not be displayed. If you like the smooth, relaxed style that sets the perfect tone for a romantic evening, you'll find it in four of this CD's seven tracks: "Georgia On My Mind," "The Touch of Your Lips," "Come Closer to Me," and "You Go Your Way." This is how smooth jazz is really supposed to sound.</p> <p>"I Wish I Were Twins" and "Changes" are lively foot-tappers, and we're also treated to some jamming on soprano sax in the appropriately titled "The Fish Horn." Overall, this is probably the best album from this late in Zoot's career, performed in the quartet setting that was his best showcase. Autumn Leaves </em> Zoot Sims - Tenor sax Red Mitchell - Bass Rune Gustafsson – Guitar </pre> <p> </p> <p>This DVD was filmed in Sweden in November 1984 and originally issued on an LP, released by Sonet and Pablo. It may have been prophetic that the last two tunes are autumnal, as this set was filmed only a few months before Zoot Sims died. It is a very informal session, recorded in the rather gloomy library of Sonet Records without an audience. Sims is accompanied by bassist Red Mitchell and guitarist Rune Gustafsson. The music is interspersed with Red and Zoot exchanging reminiscences.</p> <p>I remember seeing Zoot Sims in a London JATP concert and being amazed at the antique, almost rusty, tenor saxophone that Zoot played. Here he tells Mitchell that the sax is 45 years old. Despite this, he produces a wonderfully warm, sweet tone from the instrument - a sound only surpassed by such smoothies as Stan Getz and Ben Webster.</p> <p>Most of the programme consists of slow or mid-tempo tunes played with subdued relaxation. Although Zoot Sims is the featured artist, one's attention is continually drawn to Red Mitchell, who not only supplies a solid bass line throughout the set but also contributes some remarkable solos. Note particularly his quotations from Rhapsody in Blue and Alice Blue Gown in Castle Blues, and the effective slides he produces on the strings in Sweet Lorraine. There is also a masterly bass solo in Autumn Leaves. Bass solos often leave me cold but I could watch and listen to Red Mitchell all day. Rune Gustafsson is more in the background, although he plays a few skilful solos.</p> <p>Most of the repertoire comprises jazz standards, although it is good to hear Henry Nemo's rare 'Tis Autumn, performed tenderly by Zoot and his colleagues. Despite its short length (lasting just above 51 minutes), this DVD is worth getting for the superb musicianship. Dialogue in concerts sometimes seems unrepeatable but it is fun to hear Zoot's anecdotes about the time he kicked his sax case downstairs and when Benny Goodman made him play a long solo because Benny was intent on stealing an apple from Zoot's music stand! ---Tony Augarde, musicweb-international.com</p> <p>download (mp3 @320 kbs):</p> <p><a href="http://uploaded.net/file/8nok19yj" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">uploaded </a> <a href="https://yadi.sk/d/wPhXt1Kmhuufq" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">yandex </a> <a href="http://www.4shared.com/zip/OL8EDJYHba/ZtSms-IaSM83.html" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">4shared </a> <a href="https://mega.co.nz/#!Edo1mB6L!lvB8sMzr-aZB3qvo-htAR3jxUz-Ul5-QTw8vhhlsLuc" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mega </a> <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/download/ysedqbmula5o31p/ASM-B-G-ITP08.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mediafire</a> <a href="http://www.solidfiles.com/d/cfe4e6d227/" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">solidfiles</a> <a href="http://zalivalka.ru/255094" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">zalivalka </a> <a href="https://cloud.mail.ru/public/3ru2/5F8CRFjPA" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">cloudmailru </a> <a href="https://www.oboom.com/91P88R5L/ZtSms-IaSM83.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">oboom </a></p> <p> </p> <p><a href="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/javascript:history.back();">back</a></p> <p><strong>Zoot Sims - In A Sentimental Mood (1983)</strong></p> <p><img src="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/ObrMuz/Jazz/Zoot Sims/zootmood.jpg" border="0" alt="Image could not be displayed. ---Tony Augarde, musicweb-international.com</p> <p>download (mp3 @320 kbs):</p> <p><a href="http://uploaded.net/file/8nok19yj" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">uploaded </a> <a href="https://yadi.sk/d/wPhXt1Kmhuufq" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">yandex </a> <a href="http://www.4shared.com/zip/OL8EDJYHba/ZtSms-IaSM83.html" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">4shared </a> <a href="https://mega.co.nz/#!Edo1mB6L!lvB8sMzr-aZB3qvo-htAR3jxUz-Ul5-QTw8vhhlsLuc" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mega </a> <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/download/ysedqbmula5o31p/ASM-B-G-ITP08.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mediafire</a> <a href="http://www.solidfiles.com/d/cfe4e6d227/" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">solidfiles</a> <a href="http://zalivalka.ru/255094" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">zalivalka </a> <a href="https://cloud.mail.ru/public/3ru2/5F8CRFjPA" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">cloudmailru </a> <a href="https://www.oboom.com/91P88R5L/ZtSms-IaSM83.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">oboom </a></p> <p> </p> <p><a href="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/javascript:history.back();">back</a></p> Zoot Sims in Paris 1950-1953 (1986) 2011-05-09T12:11:00Z 2011-05-09T12:11:00Z http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/en/jazz/577-zootsims/9083-zoot-sims-in-paris-1950-1953.html bluesever administration@theblues-thatjazz.com <p><strong>Zoot Sims in Paris 1950-1953 (1986)</strong></p> <p><img src="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/ObrMuz/Jazz/Zoot Sims/paris50-53jpg.jpg" border="0" alt="Image could not be displayed. He always sounded inspired, and although his style did not change much after the early 1950s, Zoot's enthusiasm and creativity never wavered.</p> <p>Zoot's family was involved in vaudeville, and he played drums and clarinet as a youth. His older brother, Ray Sims, developed into a fine trombonist who sounded like Bill Harris. At age 13, Sims switched permanently to the tenor, and his initial inspiration was Lester Young, although he soon developed his own cool-toned sound. Sims was a professional by the age of 15, landing his first important job with Bobby Sherwood's Orchestra, and he joined Benny Goodman's big band for the first time in 1943; he would be one of BG's favorite tenormen for the next 30 years. He recorded with Joe Bushkin in 1944, and even at that early stage, his style was largely set.</p> <p>After a period in the Army, Sims was with Goodman from 1946-1947. He gained his initial fame as one of Woody Herman's "Four Brothers" during his time with the Second Herd (1947-1949). Zoot had brief stints with Buddy Rich's short-lived big band, Artie Shaw, Goodman (1950), Chubby Jackson, and Elliot Lawrence. He toured and recorded with Stan Kenton (1953) and Gerry Mulligan (1954-1956). Sims was also a star soloist with Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band of the early '60s and visited the Soviet Union with Benny Goodman in 1962. A freelancer throughout most of his career, Sims often led his own combos or co-led bands with his friend Al Cohn; the two tenors had very similar sounds and styles. Zoot started doubling on soprano quite effectively in the '70s. Through the years, he appeared in countless situations, and always seemed to come out ahead. Fortunately, Zoot Sims recorded frequently, leading sessions for Prestige, Metronome, Vogue, Dawn, Storyville, Argo, ABC-Paramount, Riverside, United Artists, Pacific Jazz, Bethlehem, Colpix, Impulse, Groove Merchant, Famous Door, Choice, Sonet, and a wonderful series for Pablo. ---itunes.com</p> <p>download (mp3 @320 kbs):</p> <p><a href="http://ul.to/3zd0nb1y" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">uploaded </a> <a href="https://yadi.sk/d/-ug0b70chXkgj" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">yandex </a> <a href="http://www.4shared.com/zip/bePGCBaIba/ZtSmsPrs86.html" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">4shared </a> <a href="https://mega.co.nz/#!W1BmBSKK!DCuUC4nS8slcdtP1jEiBsUswii2kGTE3_Ah2aKec2uk" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mega </a> <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/download/kvrdfk8eqb3h58a/ZtSmsPrs86.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">mediafire</a> <a href="http://www.solidfiles.com/d/992b628a33/" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">solidfiles</a> <a href="http://zalivalka.ru/236585" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">zalivalka </a> <a href="https://cloud.mail.ru/public/F6Ba/2Ap9TzTA6" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">cloudmailru </a> <a href="https://www.oboom.com/G9PMCGMR/ZtSmsPrs86.zip" target="_blank" onclick="window.open(this.href,'newwin','left=27,width=960,height=720,menubar=1,toolbar=1,scrollbars=1,status=1,resizable=1');return false;">oboom </a></p> <p> </p> <p><a href="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/javascript:history.back();">back</a></p> <p><strong>Zoot Sims in Paris 1950-1953 (1986)</strong></p> <p><img src="http://www.theblues-thatjazz.com/ObrMuz/Jazz/Zoot Sims/paris50-53jpg.jpg" border="0" alt="Image could not be displayed.
