Cóż w heavy metalu może być wspanialszego od tnących z lewa i prawa gitarowych solówek, pędzącej partii rytmicznej i rozbrzmiewającego triumfalnie wokalu?

Crystal Viper już od prawie dziesięciu lat serwuje swym fanom ten nieodłączny zestaw ciężkiego brzmienia. Dodatkowo raczy nas świetnym kobiecym wokalem, co do standardu w tym gatunku nie należy. Gotyckie naleciałości są tu więc jak najbardziej uzasadnione, choć stanowią jedynie delikatne tło najnowszego dziecka Viperów. Na "Crimen Excepta" znajdziemy mniej utworów trzymających się utartego schematu przeplatania zwrotek z refrenami i solówkami. Po pierwszym przesłuchaniu kompozycje wydają się bardziej urozmaicone niż dotychczas, dzięki czemu nowa płyta zyskuje na wyrazistości.

Pierwszy kawałek swą tematyką zaprasza nas do czasów inkwizycji, z których do końca trwania krążka ciężko się będzie wydostać. Sam sposób w jaki Marta prowadzi śpiewem słuchacza, sugeruje formę opowiadania, ze zwieńczeniem w postaci refrenu. Szczególnie podoba mi się ostatni fragment, gdzie wraz ze zmianą tempa sekcji rytmicznej wokal pozostaje bez zmian.Generalnie, refreny są mocną stroną całego krążka i sprawiają, że "Crimen Excepta" jest po prostu łatwiej przyswajalna.

Na "It's Your Omen" refren ciekawie wplątuje się w partie organów obrazujące wspomniane gotyckie klimaty. Prawdziwie zapadającym w pamięć utworem jest jednak tytułowy "Crimen Excepta", w którym otwierające go słowa "Again and again..." wręcz zaskakująco wpadają w ucho. Niemal siedmiominutowa kompozycja świetnie się rozwija, prezentując ciekawe riffy, soczyste solówki i prawdziwie heavymetalowy wokal. Ten, momentami agresywny, kiedy trzeba bardziej stonowany, osiąga szczyty na skali wysokich dźwięków w equalizerze.

Jest coś klimatycznego we wszystkich utworach na "Crimen Excepta", co sprawia, że im dłużej słucha się tej płyty, tym trudniej nie odczuć chłodnego powiewu wieków średnich. Krążek bardzo silnie nawiązuje do klasycznego rocka, jakże blisko spokrewnionego z heavy metalem. Znakomitym przykładem jest tu "Medicus Animarum". Wbrew wrażeniu jakie mógłby sprawiać tytuł, kawałek jest dość prosty, a nawet schematyczny. Muszę przyznać, że słuchając go nie mogę doczekać się refrenu. Ma on coś ze sztandarowych rockowych numerów z lat osiemdziesiątych. Tutaj oczywiście przeciwwagę do dosyć schematycznego układu kompozycji stanowią jak zwykle bogato rozbudowane solówki. Obok "Crimen Excepta" to zdecydowanie mój faworyt na najnowszej płycie Crystal Viper.

Album polecam wszystkim, szukającym w heavy metalu nutki tajemniczości i specyficznego klimatu, a także tym, którzy (jak najbardziej słusznie) twierdzą, że ten gatunek to po prostu kolejna ewolucja starego, dobrego rocka. ---Łukasz Haciuk, magazyngitarzysta.pl

Is this 2012 or 1985? I absolutely, positively DO NOT mean that in a negative way either. The Polish band Crystal Viper has made a history out channeling some classic style, true heavy metal of the past, and I don’t know, maybe it’s just me but damn does it sound fresh and revitalized. The 4th and latest piece of true heavy metal nirvana provided by Crystal Viper is perhaps their most ambitious to date: “Crimen Excepta”. “Crimen Excepta” is a concept album about the Holy Inquisition, black magic and witchcraft. You don’t get much more metal than that. “Crimen Excepta” is listed to have 15 tracks (17 on the limited edition) because each song is separated by a brief interlude that segues into the next song. The opening track “Witch’s Mark” heralds Crystal Viper’s return and this is just a flat-out head banging metal tune and what a way to kick start “Crimen Excepta”. For the next song “Child of the Flame” the band dials back the speed a bit and deliver a heavy track that features some classic guitar harmonies and guitar work that recalls vintage Iron Maiden, Running Wild and Accept, and some gang style background shouts. “Crimen Excepta” is probably the darkest and most relentless Crystal Viper album to date, a fact that is heard on the fantastic “It’s Your Omen”. This song features some keyboard/organ work that is somewhat reminiscent of late 80s/early 90s King Diamond, particularly the KD album “The Eye”. This song is accentuated with a great solo courtesy of Andy Wave. For the next track vocalist Marta Gabriel is joined by David Bower of the NWOBHM band Hell who adds additional vocals to the song. Maybe technically Marta is not the best singer you will ever hear, but her voice just has so much power and emotion and it is pure metal reminiscent of the legendary Leather Leone. Some of Marta’s screams would sure give Leather a run for her money. The limited edition features two bonus tracks. The first one is a cover of “Tyrani Piekel” from fellow Polish band Vader. As you can imagine, this is a heavy cover and the band is joined by none other than Peter from Vader as he lends his vocals to the track. The second bonus track is the title song from the upcoming movie, “Ghosts of Sherwood”. Those two songs make the limited edition essential for fans of Crystal Viper. When you buy a Crystal Viper album, you know what you are going to get. That is not to say that they are boring or predictable, they are not afraid to add a new wrinkle here and there, but at the end of the day Crystal Viper is a heavy metal band and they are proud of that fact. With “Crimen Excepta”, Crystal Viper continues to pay homage to a bygone era in heavy metal whilst still remaining relevant in 2012 and leading the way for bands that play classic heavy metal. ---Tony Cannella, femmemetalwebzine.net

Płyta zawiera zapis koncertu, jaki katowicki zespół dał w 2009 roku w niemieckim Loreley na festiwalu Magic Circle, gdzie grał na zaproszenie członków grupy Manowar, oraz kilka utworów studyjnych. Wśród bonusów znalazła się m.in. utwór niespodzianka z niewydanej płyty studyjnej, utwór z limitowanego singla "Stronghold: Under Siege" czy "Obsession (It Burns For You)" - wcześniej niedostępny cover Virgin Steele. ---muzyka.interia.pl

I'm not the biggest live album fan; they normally have to be really good to warrant a listen. I always felt Crystal Viper was a cool band, but I really think that at two albums into their career (at the time of pressing) a live album was a little soon. From 10 tracks on offer, six of them are from the live show itself. The rest of the album is made up with a track from their upcoming album Legends, a Virgin Steele cover and two rarities.

The live selection of tracks is quite good, being three tracks from their debut and three from their last album Metal Nation. Of course the cuts from the debut stand out the most as they're actually stronger tracks, the three we're treated to are "Shadows on the Horizon", "The Island of the Silver Skull" and "The Last Axeman". My favorite is "Shadows on the Horizon" which is a particularly cool rendition of an already kick ass track. As far as the performances go everyone is pretty much on form, although Marta sounds like she might be having a little bit too much fun and the quality of her performance wavers from time to time, nothing major though.

The rest of the tracks are cool enough, "Secrets of Black Water" is a quality mid-paced cut from Legends. "The Wolf and the Witch" is a track that allegedly hadn't been released on CD up until now, it's an enjoyable track and could be an incentive for a fan purchase (although if you were that die-hard a fan you'd have picked up the vinyl). Rounding off the rest of the release we have "Stronghold Under Siege" from another single which is a nice speedy power metal number and probably the better of the bonus cuts. The final track is a cover of Virgin Steele's "Obsession (It Burns for You)" which is quite faithful to the original, and a boat load of fun Marta's vocal work really kicks ass here.

Overall Defenders Of The Magic Circle: Live In Germany would serve as the perfect introduction to this band and while not great, it is surely fun enough. Previously established fans won't really need this unless they're a completist. ---Christopher Foley, metalcrypt.com

Bardzo mnie cieszy, że kolejna polska kapela trafiła pod skrzydła znanego, europejskiego wydawcy. Kilkuletnia ciężka praca samego zespołu, jak i menedżera doprowadziły do tego, że grupa zaczęła być znana w Europie, co skutkuje - między innymi - obecnością na kilku ważnych festiwalach.

A sama płyta, no cóż, to klasyczny, ani lepszy, ani też gorszy album Crystal Viper. To, co poruszało, znalazło się na pierwszym krążku, było na swój sposób nowe, na swój sposób ciekawe. Teraz jest już (tylko) kolejnym dobrym albumem. Na pewno na uwagę zasługiwał i wciąż zasługuje świetny wokal Marty. Takiego wokalu – według mnie – brakowało przez ostatnie lata na naszym podwórku.

Na tym krążku wszystko jest na znanym nam już, wysokim poziomie, ale brakuje chyba już tej energii, tej radości z grania, wszystko wydaje się być takie bardziej wystudiowane, pachnie trochę sztucznością, graniem pod wydawcę, a nie fanów.

Nie zmienia to jedna faktu, że płyty słucha się bardzo miło, bo i muzyka wszak jest bardzo miła dla miłośnika heavy metalowych dźwięków, spod znaku Running Wild, Manowar, czy Accept, którego całkiem udany cover w postaci „TV War” zespół umieścił na końcu albumu.

Dostajemy klasyczny, często patatajkowy metal, którego tak naprawdę nigdy dość, znakomicie zagrany (na uwagę zasługują coraz ciekawsze solówki gitarzysty. Mnie osobiście spodobała się zwłaszcza ta w „Night Of The Sin”), ale nie brak tu szybkich kawałków (jak wspomniany „Night Of The Sin” czy „Man Of Stone”), pojawiają się utwory cięższe, mocniejsze („Goddes Of Death”, „Secrets Of The Black Water”) oraz obowiązkowa ballada „Symonia Bork”.

Na uwagę zasługuje koncept albumu, czyli wykorzystanie różnych polskich podań, jako podstawy do tekstów. Rzecz godna uznania.

Polecam tę płytę wszystkich fanom starego, dobrego metalu. Może nie wywoła takich emocji, jak krążki poprzednie, ale to wciąż muzyka na wysokim światowym poziomie, z jedną z najciekawszych wokalistek w świecie metalu. --- Ray, metalmundus.pl

In comparison to their previous output I've got to say that Legends is their most pristine sounding release, and the production is a lot clearer and brighter than the last two. The riffs are excellent as per usual, catchy and very Running Wild. The rhythm section is spot on, quality sticks work courtesy of "Golem" (Tomasz Danczak) which serves as the perfect backbone, and Tom Woryna's bass is kept in the mix right where it belongs. Returning to the guitars, Andy Wave has done a cracking job, as mentioned before the riffs are great and catchy, the solos again are spot on, and the melodies are perfectly catchy and hooky and have kept me going back to this.

Track-wise, the album kicks off with a short narrated piece which I'm indifferent to, I could have done without but it doesn't detract at all. What follows is a tour de force in heavy metal brilliance with three winners straight off the bat, "The Ghost Ship" and "Blood of the Heroes" are straight out of Running Wild although never verge on outright plagiarism, with both boasting wickedly catch choruses. I should mention that it does take a few spins for the hooks to bury their way into your flesh, I took me around four or five spins to register everything but now I wander around the house singing the songs and humming the melodies. "Greed Is Blind" seems to be the lead off track, having a music video made for it, excellent track again with some real nice melodies.

I could really go on about stand out tracks. I'd say the weakest offering is probably "Sydonia Bork", though it's still a pretty catchy ballad. After an ever so slight down point Crystal Viper return to the awesomeness of the opening three belters, with the quality remaining high up until their cover of Accept's "TV War". With personal highlights in the catchy "Night of the Sin" and the awesome "Black Leviathan" with its Maiden style intro, I could really go on but I would imagine you've got the picture by now: this rules.

I've been pleasantly surprised by this album, and I've got to say its one of my favorites of 2010. With the only slight niggles being the ballad, which only really niggles because I felt it was placed too soon into the album, and also as previously mentioned this took a little while to click, so those with a short attention span could be thrown. Overall if you're a fan of Crystal Viper then this is a no-brainer you won't be disappointed. Fans of good old fashioned heavy metal, this album is a boat load of fun and certainly worthy of your attention. Highly Recommended. --- Andromeda_Unchained, metal-archives.com

Odnoszę wrażenie, że „Possession” powstał zdecydowanie zbyt szybko. Minął raptem rok od wydania bardzo dobrego „Crimen Excepta”, a tu panowie i sympatyczna pani wokalistka wkraczają na rynek z nowym materiałem. Materiałem, który sprawia wrażenie, jakby powstawał w pośpiechu i na zdecydowanie obniżonych lotach. I to niestety słychać – zaczynając od samych kompozycji, które nie mają w sobie zbyt wiele ognia i polotu, a kończąc na fatalnej produkcji (lepiej nie odpalajcie tego materiału z Internetu, bo nie dobrniecie nawet do drugiego kawałka). Krótko mówiąc, brzmienie jest cieniutkie jak nitka makaronu i płaściutkie jak pizza. Traci na tym klimat, tracą nienajgorsze przecież partie solowe gitar, traci też Marta Gabriel, która ratując nieco honor nowej płyty, wychodzi właściwie na taką „the last axeman” całego tego przedsięwzięcia. Szkoda, że tylko ona…

Wiem, jestem może brutalny i nieobiektywny. Co do drugiego zarzutu odpowiem krótko – obiektywizm w przypadku pisania o muzyce ma taki sam sens, jak dyskusja na temat gustów kulinarnych. Jeden woli schabowego, inny zadowoli się makaronem i pizzą wegetariańską. A że brutalnie? Cóż, myślę, że działa tutaj prosty mechanizm psychologiczny. Oczekiwałem od tej płyty płomieni, energii, mocy, oczekiwałem METALU. A dostałem, co najwyżej, kawałek cienkiego metalowego (w końcu nazwa zobowiązuje) drutu, zwanego tu i ówdzie zimnym ogniem. Ooo, mniej więcej coś TAKIEGO. W sam raz na święta? Może, ale raczej nie na rockową imprezę. Reasumując – będę czekał na kolejny materiał Crystal Viper, a póki co wolę raczyć się starszymi dokonaniami kapeli, ewentualnie sprawdzając co lepsze momenty z omawianego tu krążka. Bo i takie tutaj są, choćby pod numerami 4 i 6. Szkoda tylko, że niespecjalnie poprawiają one wizerunek całego materiału. ---Kamil Trombik, etalmundus.pl

So, we all know Crystal Viper is awesome at this point, right? After living high on the hog with prime album after prime album, including the exceptional "Crimen Expecta," one would expect this Polish heavy metal machine to bust a valve or a gas line and officially put an end to the party. Every brand spanking new car builds up rust and eventually chugs out its last few miles in a rough, clunky haze, practically begging for someone to end its misery. Well, "Possession" is several thousand miles from the junkyard being an option, but Crystal Viper's attack is beginning to show the classic signs of an aging band losing some of its zest. However, for the group’s weakest release thus far, "Possession" is still a smooth ride, usually.

The album's concept is a little goofy: it's about a demonically possessed girl who learns her demon is actually an ANCIENT ALIEN THAT CONTROLS THE WORLD AND THE GOVERNMENT, BRO. Although silly, I could never look at the body of work Marta Gabriel has created in her time as Crystal Viper's leader and ever call her anything short of incredible. As a vocalist, a songwriter, a guitar player, and a performer, she's proven herself to be one of the finest metal elites around. "Possession" has the semblance of dark emotion and Crystal Viper's own breed of conceptual horror à la King Diamond/Mercyful Fate (look at the artwork!), leaving the music to rely on an incredibly passionate and powerful vocal performance, I'd say Marta's finest yet.

The second half of “Possession” ventures into a melancholic, epic space that reminds me vaguely of Candlemass or Atlantean Kodex; Marta's voice is prime, and the direction of these anthems shows a kind of natural evolution that suits this band wonderfully—Crystal Viper is growing, not retracing. The group’s real strength has always been the driving heavy metal anthem roasting with straightforward riffs and flashy guitar leads, which "Possession" has plenty of. "Fight Evil With Evil" and "We are Many" are perhaps some of the finest tunes from the Crystal Viper camp, boasting excellent choruses and superb musicianship. Come on, it's Crystal Viper: they aren't usually exploring experimental realms or pulling surprises out of their backsides, but do they really need to with sturdy riffs and addictive choruses everywhere?

My only issue with the album is its occasional flop. "You Will Burn You Will Die" is pretty mundane, and "Julia is Possessed" falls flat as Gabriel spits out lyrical nonsense opposite Desaster’s Sataniac’s growling grunts, which sound out of place and ineffective. Cool cameo, but little else can be said about it. I'm more fond of the minor role Harry Conklin of Jag Panzer and Satan's Host plays during a verse of "Fight Evil with Evil." Conklin's voice is natural in this setting, and it's not a far cry to call his brief show one of the better installments of the customary Crystal Viper guest appearance. "Possession" isn't much more than another slab of heavy metal goodness. Crystal Viper is still awesome, and the band's fifth full-length record lives up to the quality standard of the Crystal Viper brand with the same harsh bite and brawn. Nie przepadam za młodymi zespołami, które grają, brzmią i wyglądają, jakby nigdy nie słyszały nic, co powstało po latach 80. ubiegłego wieku. Większość z nich powiela tylko stare, zgrane patenty, jakościowo będąc daleko za swoimi idolami, których próbują nieudolnie naśladować. Są jednak chlubne wyjątki i Crystal Viper jest właśnie jednym z nich. Katowicka grupa ma dwa niewątpliwe atuty. Pierwszy to wokalistka Marta Gabriel, która po prostu wymiata. Gdy śpiewa z chrypką, trochę kojarzy się z Lee Aaron, ale o wiele lepsze wrażenie robi w wyższych rejestrach – wystarczy posłuchać pierwszych sekund otwierającego płytę utworu „The Witch Is Back”. Jeśli ktoś ma problemy ze wstawaniem rano, to polecam ustawienie sobie tego numeru jako budzika w telefonie – szybka i skuteczna pobudka gwarantowana. I to nie tylko za sprawą przeszywającego wrzasku na początku, ale też dzięki temu, co dzieje się zaraz potem. Bardzo mocny agresywny kawałek w sam raz na początek.

Drugim atutem jest niezwykła łatwość tworzenia chwytliwych, zapadających w pamięć kompozycji. Crystal Viper gra cały czas w tym samym stylu, a jednak nie ma się wrażenia powtarzalności. To już szósty krążek i zupełnie nie słychać zmęczenia materiału ani spadku formy. Co prawda zespół ma w swojej dyskografii lepsze albumy, ale „Queen of the Witches” nie nudzi ani przez moment. W dużej mierze to zasługa tego, że materiał jest dość zróżnicowany, a utwory poukładane tak, że całość zachowuje odpowiednią dramaturgię. Znajdziemy tu szybkie, drapieżne kawałki, jak wspomniany „The Witch Is Back”, „Flames and Blood” czy jeden z moich dwóch faworytów „Rise of the Witch Queen”, przebojowe „Do or Die” (to mój drugi faworyt) z charakterystycznym dla Iron Maiden gitarowym „tam-tadadam-tadadam-tadadam”, dostojnie kroczący „When the Sun Goes Down” przypominający takie hymny jak „Heaven and Hell” i „Headless Cross” Black Sabbath czy „Warriors of the World United” Manowar (choć nie porywa tak jak one), na wskroś klasyczne „I Fear No Evil” i „Burn My Fire Burn” i coś, czego brakuje we współczesnym metalu, a tutaj pojawia się dwukrotnie, czyli ballady – delikatna „Trapped Behind”, zaśpiewana wyłącznie z akompaniamentem fortepianu, oraz cięższa „We Will Make It Last Forever”. Nie ma tu wypełniaczy. Właściwie to najsłabiej na tym tle wypada cover Grim Ripper „See You In Hell”.

Zespół zaprosił kilku znamienitych gości – Mantas (Venom Inc., ex-Venom) i Ross the Boss (ex-Manowar) zagrali po solówce, a w „We Will Make It Last Forever” zaśpiewał Steve Bettney, wokalista grupy Saracen. Autorem okładki jest Andreas Marschall, znany ze współpracy z Blind Guardian, Running Wild czy Kreator.

Tak jak podobają mi się nowe utwory, tak nie podoba mi się suche, przytłumione brzmienie. Wolałem już bardziej surowy, ale ostrzejszy sound „Possesion”. Druga wada to kanciasty angielski Marty, ale to niestety nic nowego. Szkoda, że od debiutu, czyli od dziesięciu lat nic się z tym nie udało zrobić. Wszystko to sprawia, że Crystal Viper nie brzmi tak profesjonalnie, jak zagraniczne bandy również próbujące wskrzeszać ducha lat 80., jak chociażby Lonewolf, Hammerfall czy koledzy z tej samej wytwórni, czyli Bloodbound. Mimo to uważam, że zespół nie jest odpowiednio doceniany, szczególnie w Polsce, ale wiadomo, że u nas heavy i power metal nie cieszą się taką popularnością jak u naszych zachodnich i południowych sąsiadów (no, chyba że jesteś z innego kraju i nagrałeś „Fear of the Dark” albo śpiewasz o polskich żołnierzach). Toteż Crystal Viper częściej można zobaczyć na koncercie np. w Niemczech i Czechach niż w Polsce. Z drugiej strony większość polskich kapel może tylko pomarzyć o wspólnych nagraniach z członkami Manowar czy Venom. ---rozwalwzmacniacz.pl

The 2000’s were a time of resurrection for the old-school heavy metal movement, probably sparked by the good efforts released by Hammerfall in the final portion of the 1990’s. A young lady from the once Nazi-raped lands of Poland, Marta Gabriel, decided it was time to weigh in on the matter and created Crystal Viper, a band so true to heavy metal it was named after a snake made of a precious stone (it doesn’t get more epic than this). 5 albums later – with some great ones and others not so much – and some unfortunate health issues regarding Marta, she and her companions Andy Wave (guitars), Tomek “Golem” Danczak (drums) and Błażej Grygiel (bass) are back to attack with ‘Queen of the Witches’, a somewhat concept album that tells the tales of witches and true evil.

As it is with all their albums, ‘Queen of the Witches’ is stacked with references and influences from the great old ones such as Cirith Ungol, Warlord, Manowar, Virgin Steele, Manilla Road and more, all while maintaining the already characteristic vocals and style of play of Crystal Viper. The effort quickly heat things up with “The Witch Is Back”, starting with a vigorous scream and well-crafted heavy riffs. A good opener, the song hits the bulls eye on building the album atmosphere in the form of a mid-paced endeavor. “I Fear no Evil” comes next and tears everything apart with Maiden-esque leads and a catchy chorus. Special attention to Błażej Grygiel in this one, who steps up his game and delivers a killer effort on the bass, while Marta’s vocals range from a more aggressive approach in the verse to melodic and accessible in the chorus.

There are two ballads that seem out of place for me and could have been crafted better or modified to fit the atmosphere in a more cohesive way: “When the Sun Goes Down”, which is not actually a ballad in the true sense of the word, but is slow-paced and too light not to be considered a ballad, and follow-up “Trapped Behind” – this one a full-time ballad -, which completely terminates the fist-pumping atmosphere created in the first two songs, making the album lose its climax almost entirely. Things pick up once again with the awesome “Do or Die”, song that features living legend Ross the Boss in the guitar; the chorus is headbanging-friendly with pumped up choirs and the entire song is constructed as a galloping and full of attitude anthem. The album is actually stacked with an old-school vibe and special appearances by renowned traditional metallers such as Mantas of Venom in the bombastic “Flames and Blood” (one of the best songs here), where he delivers a good guitar solo, and Steve Bettney of Saracen fame – band that is considered one of the most beloved of the NWOBHM movement -, who sings a duet with Marta in the power-ballad “We Will Make it Last Forever”, song that doesn’t offer much but is somewhat fun. “Burn My Fire Burn” further consolidates the classic vibe and is well-constructed in all its parts equally. Some bands, though, save the best for last, and Crystal Viper did that with “Rise of the Witch Queen”, an absolute monster of a track. Heavy, powerful, loud, fast and aggressive, it shows the entire band inspired and the best performance by Marta in the album; great way to close the album.

“But wait, Bruno, where’s that cool cover Crystal Viper always does of a classic heavy metal band?” Oh, it’s here, my lonely friend, don’t worry. The honored ones this time are Grim Reaper and Exciter, with the songs “See You in Hell” and “Long Live the Loud”. Both have the Crystal Viper cover seal of quality, as they are respectful and competent renditions of the original ones, but also feature a cool twist here and there. Sadly, though, you will have to choose one, as “See You in Hell” will be released as a bonus track for the CD version and “Long Live the Loud” for the LP version (oh, what the hell, buy them both). Marta was in charge of the songwriting and lyrics and the album was produced by the very competent Bart Gabriel (Cirith Ungol, Sacred Steel, Mythra), who mixes his works in the best way possible to fit that old-school sound, and the artwork was created by Andreas Marshall (Running Wild, Kreator, Blind Guardian and a thousand more bands), so you know it’s a killer one.

All in all, Crystal Viper actually has some catching up to do when it comes to the cream of the crop of the NWOTHM and Heavy Metal bands, but managed to achieve a great comeback giving the circumstances. At the same time accessible to the masses and complex enough to satisfy the hardcore headbanger, ‘Queen of the Witches’ does the job right, despite some minor setbacks; as a fan of the band since its inception and avid critic of good music, I find the album worthy of the band’s name. Podchodziłem do tej płyty nieco podejrzliwie. Zewsząd dochodziły mnie głosy zachwytu nad tym wydawnictwem. A zawsze, gdy tak jest, mój sceptycyzm wzrasta i myślę sobie: eee tam, pewnie przesadzają. Poza tym wiedziałem, że w zespole śpiewa kobieta. Do heavy metalu jakoś kobiety mi średnio pasowały, choć ostatnio zacząłem zmieniać zdanie np. dzięki zeszłorocznej rewelacyjnej płycie „Uncreation” zespołu Benedictum. No i z takim to nastawieniem podszedłem do słuchania tej płyty...A potem było już tylko kajanie się i biczowanie, jak ja w ogóle mogłem mieć jakieś „ale”.

Nie wiem, czy jestem w stanie oddać doskonałość tej płyty. Mamy do czynienia z czystej krwi heavy metalem, bez jakichkolwiek udziwnień i dodatków. Żadnego nowoczesnego brzmienia, ma być w stylu lat 80-tych i tak jest, od początku do końca. Produkcją zajął się Bart Gabriel i doskonale się ze swojego zadania wywiązał, wszystko wyraźnie słychać, a zarazem mamy tu ten charakterystyczny dla płyt z lat 80-tych brud. I o to chodzi! Ta płyta to esencja grania sprzed dwóch dekad, coś niesamowitego.

W warstwie tekstowej cała płyta to opowieść o tytułowej Crystal Viper – utrzymana w konwencji fantasy, doskonale pasująca do takiej muzyki. Do tego naprawdę świetna okładka, ech czego chcieć więcej? Czego? Trzymającej w napięciu od początku do końca, niedającej wytchnąć, solidnej porcji heavy metalu rzecz jasna! You wanted that – you've got it! Album rozpoczyna intro, w którym gościnnie udzielił się wokalista grupy Sacred Steel - Gerrit P.Mutz. A potem machina o nazwie CRYSTAL VIPER rusza do boju. Już „Night Prowler” udowadnia, że mamy do czynienia z płytą wyjątkową na polskim rynku. Świetne brzmienie gitar, miażdżące bębny, niesamowity bas i ten głos!! Zapewne najmocniej będzie się kojarzył z Doro, i nie będzie to skojarzenie chybione. Leather Wych dysponuje doskonałym, mocnym głosem, nad którym świetnie panuje. Należą się jej duże brawa, świetnie sobie radzi zarówno w szybkich kawałkach, jak i w tych spokojniejszych. Osobne wyrazy uznania i medal z ziemniaka należą się basiście. Rewelacyjne partie basu są słyszalne na całej płycie, a w „Island Of The Silver Scull” mamy nawet basową solówkę. Chylę czoła, jestem pod wrażeniem! Crystal Viper nie daje odetchnąć słuchaczowi, nie ma tu wypełniaczy, czy nie tyle słabych, co choćby słabszych utworów, same killery. Wszystko mocno inspirowane heavy metalem lat 80-tych: Manowar, Iron Maiden, Running Wild, by wymienić tylko kilka kapel. Nie ma tu jednak nic z bezmyślnego kopiowania. Zespół po prostu korzysta z najlepszych wzorców. „The Curse Of Crystal Viper” jest epicki, jest potężny, nic tylko słuchać, słuchać, słuchać...i machać dynią!

Mam nadzieję, że o tej płycie będzie głośno, bo na to zasługuje. Jestem naprawdę szczęśliwy i duma mnie rozpiera, że polski zespół nagrał TAKĄ płytę. „The Curse Of Crystal Viper” to dla mnie, obok „Mythical & Magical” grupy Pagan Altar, najlepszy album heavy metalowy, jaki się ukazał w tym roku. Wow, just WOW!!! This young polish band is so damn good, I can't believe there's no review for this outstanding album yet!

What you get her is highly enjoyable 80ies heavy metal without ANY modern influences. The riffs, the melodies, the production, the artworks, everything just screams 1984. Imagine a mix between early Iron Maiden or some other weird NWOBHM stuff like Angel Witch or faster Witchfinder General, the more straight suff of Cirith Ungol, some Omen and a hint Manilla Road and you know how the instrumental part of this album sounds. But what this mighty deed of pure true heavy metal makes realy unique are the vocals! You won't find many good metal bands with female vocals out there and also the "Leather Wych" isn't good. She's a goddess!!!!! Such a powerful, sometimes very high and clean, sometimes more raspy voice! If you like Doro, you will definitely enjoy the golden thraot of the littel Leather Wych, despite the lack of cheese in her voice. That's a good thing, isn't it? ;-)

Talking 'bout the songwriting, the music is just flawless! No fillers here, no annoying or even bad parts. Everything just works fine. A lot of melodic leads, a lot of guitar solos and absolutly GREAT choruses! After a short spoken intro by Gerrit of the highly recomended Sacred Steel starts "Night Prowler". And what a blast of catchy heavy metal it is! Awesome sing along melodies, creamy leadguitars, just everythings's there, what cult 80ies Metal needs! Other outstanding songs are the slow "Demon's dagger", the speed metal bolt "The last axeman" and the slow epic number "Sleeping swords" which is closing the album. But the best part of the entire LP is the godly chorus of "City of the damned"!!! It's so fuckin' catchy, you can't help just screaming along... "Dead eyes of hope, City of the lost souls"

So why this record only earns 90? OK, the weaker parts are rare, but there're some. Surely, the english lyrics are not better than mine in this review. The lyrical concept, fantasy of course, is kind of trashy, but also fun. Concerning the music, this might be quite unoriginal. Everything here has been done before. But Crystal Viper perfom there stuff with so much passion, so much attitude and so amazingly good vocals, it just deserves all this praise!!! (get the vinyl version!) ---Warfare, metal-archives.com

CRYSTAL VIPER to polski zespół heavymetalowy, założony w 2003 roku przez Martę Gabriel.

Latem 2006 roku krystalizuje się pierwszy skład i CRYSTAL VIPER staje się regularnym zespołem. Tworzą go: Marta Gabriel jako wokalistka i kompozytor, Andy Wave (czyli Łukasz Halczuch) na gitarze, Tomek "Golem" Dańczak na perkusji, i Tomek Targosz na gitarze basowej. Tego samego roku zespół dokonuje pierwszego oficjalnego nagrania (cover utworu "Flaming Metal Systems" na składankę w hołdzie MANILLA ROAD), i podpisuje kontrakt z niemiecką wytwórnią Karthago Records. Debiutancki album koncepcyjny zatytułowany "The Curse Of Crystal Viper" ukazuje się na początku 2007 roku, a rok po nim ukazuje się mini album "The Last Axeman" (2008) na który trafiają wersje demo nowych utworów, alternatywne wersje utworów z pierwszej płyty, oraz cover klasycznego utworu VIRGIN STEELE "Blood And Gasoline", nagrany przez 3 członków CRYSTAL VIPER i dwoje członków VIRGIN STEELE (fani nazywają ten projekt "CRYSTAL STEELE"). Crystal Viper is a female-fronted power metal band out of Poland, and they temper this sophomore effort with enough guts and glory and old school fervor to have rocked my face off on a Saturday afternoon. This is a superior effort to The Curse of Crystal Viper and it should appeal to both young and old fans of melodic metal with some bite to it.

"Breaking the Curse" leads off, a symphonic intro comprised of acoustics and glorious synthesizers, weaving a tragic and brief tale to herald the arrival of "Metal Nation", which uses some of the same base melodies to create a nice continuity. Vocalist Marta Gabriel, errr...excuse me, Leather Wych has a pretty raw tone to her voice that I appreciate, you also catch a hint of her accent. Works for me. This is not fairy metal, so if you're seeking ridiculous operatic vocals and songs about teenage vampires and wizard academies, you'd better fuck off. Leather Wych occasionally busts into a higher register which seems a little too pompous for the album's sake, but these moments are brief. The leads are scorching, pure Euro power metal and the band can really fire you up like in "Bringer of the Light" or "The Anvil of Hate". I wasn't big into the more balladic side of the band as on "Her Crimson Tears", but at least it has some nice leadwork. Other crushers include "Gladiator, by the Blade" and "Legions of Truth".

The album sounds tight but not overproduced like many other power metal efforts. The guitar tones are crunchy and Marta's vocals truly soar. There are also some great guest vocal appearances from Lars of Stormwarrior and fucking Frank Knight of X-Wild (oh yes, it's true!). Both fit straight in opposite the frontwoman. There are some less than original riffs present (it's power metal...) and the album is far from perfect, but it's a rousing good time if you like some fury and melody with your traditional fist pumping. Fans of Helloween, Gamma Ray, Scanner, Iron Savior and others should check it out. ---autothrall, metal-archives.com
