When you've released a pair of albums containing a few monster singles and a considerable amount of unsteady, unassured material, why mess around the third time out? From beginning to end, Good Girl Gone Bad is as pop as pop gets in 2007, each one of its 12 songs a potential hit in some territory. Unlike Music of the Sun or A Girl Like Me, neither Caribbean flavorings nor ballad ODs are part of the script, and there isn't an attempt to make something as theatrical as "Unfaithful." There is, however, another '80s hit involved: just as "SOS" appropriated Soft Cell's version of "Tainted Love," "Shut Up and Drive" turns New Order's "Blue Monday" into a sleek, forthcoming proposition, one that is as undeniable and rocking as Sugababes' 2002 U.K. smash "Freak Like Me" (a cover of Adina Howard's 1995 hit that swiped from another '80s single, Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?"). "Shut Up and Drive" is part of an all-upbeat opening sequence that carries through five songs. Rihanna knows exactly what she wants and is in total control at all times, even when she's throwing things and proclaiming "I'm a fight a man" amid marching percussion and synthesizers set on "scare" during "Breakin' Dishes." The album's lead song and lead single, "Umbrella," is her best to date, delivering mammoth if spacious drums, a towering backdrop during the chorus, and vocals that are somehow totally convincing without sounding all that impassioned -- an ideal spot between trying too hard and boredom, like she might've been on her 20th take, which only adds to the song's charm. The album's second half is relatively varied and a little heavier on acoustic guitar use, but it's not lacking additional standouts. Three consecutive Timbaland productions, including one suited for a black college marching band and another that effectively pulls the romantically codependent heartstrings, enhance the album rather than make it more scattered. ---Andy Kellman, AllMusic Review

Rihanna’s fifth album in as many years has been described by the singer as "sassy, fun, flirty, energetic" – a return to the slick pop with which she made her name following last year’s darker Rated R. But it’s not quite that simple; after all, that album delivered the dancehall smash Rude Boy while this record closes with Love the Way You Lie (Part II), an affecting sequel to her Eminem collaboration that takes on added relevance given the domestic abuse she suffered at the hands of ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.

Loud certainly (if intermittently) lives up to the singer’s promise. It is brilliantly sassy and exuberant at times – the enormous synth and shout-along chorus of Only Girl (In the World) is about the measure of it, while Nicki Minaj makes for a superb partner in crime on Raining Men, her wild, kinetic flow complementing Rihanna’s steely delivery to wicked effect.

Disappointingly though, the knowing strangeness that coloured even Rated R’s most chart-friendly moments has been toned down in favour of a brazen sexuality that sits at odds with what Rihanna is trying to accomplish here. Since when was ‘flirtatious’ synonymous with ‘sadomasochistic’? As bracingly huge and catchy as it is, S&M doesn’t deviate much from its blunt title: lyrics like "Sticks and stones may break my bones / But chains and whips excite me" feel forced, not daring. Similarly, her insistence that "I like it rough" on the comparatively restrained Skin can’t help but come across a little uncomfortable in the light of her personal history.

But the argument over whether songs like this subjugate or empower their female performers is one for another time, or maybe one not worth having at all – not when the songs are this good, the singer’s voice this powerful. What’s My Name? features the similarly young and talented Drake mulling the "square route of 69" over choppy Caribbean rhythms that reappear on Man Down, where Rihanna relays a break-up as murder metaphor in thick Barbadian patois. Love the Way You Lie (Part II) even bests the original, Eminem’s verse exuding the kind of volatile, simmering menace that got everyone so excited about him in the first place. But it is Rihanna’s vocal – at once commanding, soulful and vulnerable – that anchors the song, and Loud itself, elevating it from a hit-and-miss collection into something oddly arresting. ---James Skinner, BBC Review

“Brazil, this is my very first time here and I’m so excited to share this moment with you,” said Rihanna during the first day of the Rock in Rio festival in Rio de Janeiro on Friday night (Sept. 23). With her brown hair in a ponytail and wearing red, white, and black striped shorts and a halter top, the leggy pop star set the park on fire with hit after hit, opening with “Only Girl (In the World),” spanking her male dancer during the fiery “S&M,” and storming the stage on a pink tank for “Hard.”

“Now Rio this is one of my favorite parts of the show. Rio, this is to you!” said RiRi before taking a shot and performing her celebratory LOUD single “Cheers (Drink to That).” She closed with her smash “Umbrella” as the sea of festivalgoers sang along. --- rap-up.com

Born in Saint Michael and raised in Bridgetown, she first entered the music industry by recording demo tapes under the direction of record producer Evan Rogers in 2003. In 2005, Rihanna rose to fame with the release of her debut studio album Music of the Sun and its follow-up A Girl like Me (2006), which charted on the top 10 of the U.S. Billboard 200 and respectively produced the hit singles "Pon de Replay" and "SOS". ---famousfix.com

Thanks in part to No 1 "We Found Love", in which Riri goes raving with Calvin Harris, the Bajan artist's sixth album sees her reborn as a nihilist romantic and lover of adult themes. While never shy of promoting her sexual liberation in the past (see "S&M", "Push up on Me"), here she's based an entire album around it. To wit: "Suck my cockiness, lick my persuasion" on the otherwise brilliant "Cockiness (Love It)". Bar this and a cameo by Jay-Z in which he giggles about Beyoncé constantly needing to pee ("Talk That Talk"), the emphasis on loud, clubby production means it lacks the progression of Rated R or the bombast of Loud. --- Morwenna Ferrier, guardian.co.uk/music

There’s a Maria Bamford joke about success and how to maintain it: “Make a million dollars, and then just fucking coast.” That’s where Rihanna is with Talk That Talk, her sixth studio album in six years. The record has already generated a Top 10 single (the Calvin Harris-helmed “We Found Love”), and will surely crank out a few more. Talk The Talk hits on all the obvious points. It’s a pop/R&B crossover with commercial dance-club appeal that simultaneously plays up Rihanna’s aggressive sexuality and her Juliet-in-waiting naïveté. She goes from the sweetly rapturous “You Da One” to the raunchy verses of “Suck my cockiness / Lick my persuasion” on the Bangladesh-produced “Cockiness (Love It)”—all the while maintaining her stony, deadpanned vocal delivery. Add in an obligatory Jay-Z cameo on the title track and a sparingly used dancehall-inflection throughout. It seems erratic, but it somehow works, at least musically.

Lyrically, Talk That Talk veers much too close to melodramatic prattle. The succession of song titles like “We Found Love,” “We All Want Love,” and “Drunk On Love” make for shallow generalities that would belie any real emotion. By the time Rihanna coos, “I’ll let you in on a dirty secret / I just want to be loved,” on the third-to-last track, “Roc Me Out,” it’s almost laughable. But Rihanna is a performer, not a songwriter. What she sings is less relevant than what she sells: a provocation that is enough to seem empowering, but not so radical that it’s alienating. Talk That Talk is a nearly perfect album for Rihanna—even more so, really, for her gainfully employed, carefully picked production team. --- Tuyet Nguyen, avclub.com/articles

The seventh album in seven years from the hardest working (& hardest partying) woman in pop. Rihanna records vocals on the road to backing tracks created by hot songwriter-producers like David Guetta & Stargate. Hardly surprising it’s a mixed bag. For the first half, melodious vocals sweeten pushy dance club tracks full of abrasively ear catching sound effects and often weirdly off centre beats. The second half switches to ballads, disco, reggae and naff rock for a gob-smacking defence of her confused love for R’n’B star Chris Brown, who notoriously beat her up in 2009. Breezily defiant disco duet Nobody’s Business suggest these two ridiculous narcissists deserve each other but tortured ballad suite Love Without Tragedy / Mother Mary introduces shades of self-doubt into pop’s least edifying yet most compelling soap opera. ---Neil McCormick, telegraph.co.uk
