With a Hollywood-like sense of triumph over adversity, Roxette return with their first album since singer Marie Fredriksson was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2002. She recovered, and the Swedish power-pop duo seems appropriately exhilarated.

Charm School is loaded with punchy, hook-riddled anthems that can only be described as absolute belters. From the opening surge of Way Out, a sonic sibling to Joan Jett’s I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll only even bigger, louder and dumber, this album consummately achieves its goals and then some. Resisting this tide of taut melodies, ringing guitars and precise production would take some doing. Seeing the title of first single She’s Got Nothing On (But the Radio), your brain thinks, "That’s the most dreadful title since If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me," but your inner pop kid responds like a panting puppy to its unpretentious Donna Summer’s Love’s Unkind-meets-Xenomania chops. If they ever re-make Flashdance, and let’s face it we’re all praying for that day, this would surely score the key scene.

After a quarter-century of global massiveness, 70 million albums sold, Roxette know their way around an ABBA-esque structure and a heavyweight arrangement from the university of Alone by Heart. Speak to Me is a mid-tempo synth-based bubbler with a seductive verse and gigantic chorus. It’s more 80s than a Climie Fisher B side. No One Makes It on Her Own and In My Own Way take a breath and lurch toward sentimental balladry. Even so, it’s admirable how Roxette own their genre. Throughout, Marie’s vocals are rousing in a way that highlights how half-assed the current crop of teen Americans attempting this stuff are, and Per Gessle’s songs are laser-guided – although it’s a pity he occasionally sings, and has Limahl’s hair. On Dream On he emulates some nifty Byrds guitars. Finale Sitting on Top of the World will have you raising your lighter aloft, at least until you realise everybody else is raising their smart-phones.

f proof were needed that Roxette are the new ABBA, the lack of critical respect should be enough. Like Abba, Roxette is a masterful pop band (with just the right amount of kitsch in its armor) that routinely gets slagged off for lacking substance, whatever that may be. Room Service showcases a band at the top of its form with its feet firm on the pedal: this album is a case study in songcraft and pop smarts. With its na-na-na choruses and sparkly guitars, Room Service is also trademark Roxette, a mostly no-surprises package that divides its time between the soaring, emotive power ballads and the rife-with-hooks rock-dance stompers that the band pretty much took patents out on back in the '80s and '90s. This is a group that has gotten really good at what it is doing, without getting bored doing it. Result? Probably the best Roxette album since Joyride. Opening tracks "Real Sugar" and "The Centre of the Heart" with their now-rock, now-disco, always-pop attack are effortless up-tempo smashes that deliver an unstoppable one-two sucker punch. On the other hand, "Milk and Toast and Honey" and "Bringing Me Down to My Knees" are big-ticket slow-burners that are as good as adult contemporary gets. "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)" burgles the "Just a little bit" refrain from Aretha Franklin's "Respect" and uses it to spike the sort of lush, half-pensive ballad that Roxette can toss off in its sleep by now. "You Make My Heart Go Pop" is a noisy, overproduced Top-Ten-here-we-come sparkler that'll zoom straight to the trash-magnet center of your brain and stick there for weeks on end. This album also shows a lyrically sharper Roxette, less eager than before to compromise the words for the hooks. Sure, they may occasionally slip into cliché and overt sentimentalism, but they're never less than tuneful. Both Per Gessle and Marie Frederiksson are in fine vocal form, especially Marie, who's equally proficient whether she's doing elegiac laments or burning the house down. Room Service is an exciting, immediate, high-gloss pop gem that contains very little filler indeed. On it Roxette may not be making any great leaps forward, but when you're in such a great place why bother moving? ---Leslie Mathew, AllMusic Review

Mostly recorded live, much of Tourism, a worthy compilation of hits, misses, and new cuts, spotlights how strong an act they are even without the benefit of studio production. From the lead song, "How Do You Do!," a perfectly presented pop ditty, bright and sunny as summer, to a rejuvenated version of one of their biggest hits, "It Must Have Been Love" -- you have to hear 45,000 Chileans singing back-up to truly appreciate what was one of their least affecting ballads -- you come to appreciate what true pop craftsmanship is. A spare "Things Will Never Be the Same," on which the two share lead vocals with only the backing of an acoustic guitar, and the haunting, hopeful "Queen of Rain" are both so accomplished they should have been released as singles. As with their previous album, Joyride, there is very little filler on this disc; though "So Far Away" and "Here Comes the Weekend" are a bit routine, they are still well-crafted and well-presented ballads. Not quite a greatest hits package, this is your best bet as an introduction to Roxette. ---Bryan Buss, AllMusic Review

Roxette travelling. Three years after their 2009 comeback, Swedish pop phenomenon Roxette are hotter than they’ve been since their early 90’s heyday.

Their World Tour is in full swing with virtually 1,000,000 concert tickets sold since the tour started out within the Tatneft Arena in Russian Kazan a year ago. On high of that another million Roxette records has been added to the already dizzying seventy million that Roxette has sold over the years. So far the band has played quite eighty five shows in 30+ countries (and the trip continues they don’t arrange to rest till they’ve played one hundred fifty shows). however besides zigzagging between airports, arenas, hotels and meeting with fans from everywhere the planet, the band conjointly has found time to record their new album Travelling. The idea has been to faucet into all the positive energy that has boosted the band throughout this dazzling trip, and channel it to new Roxette music. In short, an album that a bit like 1992’s Tourism captures the sensation of a band on a roll – constantly on the move, snatching inspiration as they go; recording in hotel rooms, studios, at soundchecks and together.

The result’s a desirable musical postcard with fifteen very good songs, most of that are new, some that are revisited classics and others being pearls that for numerous reasons hasn’t seen the sunshine of day before.
