In mir klingt ein Lied, it is a pleasant sounding, belcanto-feeling album from 1969, which was released in a very exceptional way at the Supraphon company as well, but only with a fade black and white and boring sleeve. It is a really colourful album and we can find pop, classic, musical and even rock, Chopin, a wonderful Ave Maria and even Rolling Stones there. The album was very successful and it has contributed to the quick rise of Karel Gott's popularity in western countries and it was released in several club versions as well. A half of the songs of this album have never been recorded by Karel Gott in czech. The album was recently released on CD, together with the czech title Hity '71.

Karel Gott is the most popular singer of Czech popular music. He began performing publicly in the years 1958–60, when he took part in amateur competitions and won his first engagement at the Vltava Café. At this time, he began studying at the conservatory, where he subsequently began taking private singing lessons. With his tenor voice, he started in the field of jazz and subsequently accept an engagement at the Semafor Theatre. Gott had his first hit in 1963 with Oči sněhem zaváté (Snowdrift eyes) and also won his first Golden, today Czech, Nightingale (Zlatý/Český slavík) award (to date he has won this prize 35 times). In 2009 Karel Gott was awarded state honours in the form of a Distinguished Merit Medal.

In 1965, the Supraphon company issued his first LP entitled Zpívá Karel Gott (Karel Gott Sings), which was soon followed by an album called The Golden Voice of Prague, which was sung in English, and a long-playing record with the West-German Polydor label entitled Die goldene Stimme aus Prag. Gott has been labeled the Golden Voice of Prague in German-speaking countries. His career enjoyed an even sharper upswing in the 1970s. He recorded a 10-part music series, Karel Gott ve Slaném (Karel Gott in Slaný). He garnered international acclaim with the song for the fairy tale Včelka Mája (Maya the Bee).

In the 1980s, he also obtained a Supraphon Golden Disc for having exported 1 million records abroad, and he received the title of National Artist for exceptional artistic activity in 1985. In March 1991, he was the first to enter the Hall of Fame of the Academy of Popular Music and received a Diamond Disc for selling 13 million records in the former Czechoslovakia.

In the course of the 1990s, Gott also became known as a painter. His success as an artist has been borne out by exhibitions held in Berlin, Cologne, Vienna, Moscow, Prague and Munich. Over the course of his 40-year career, Gott has given countless concert performances in every European country, the United States, Canada, China, Australia and Japan. He has released 100 regular albums and more than 100 compilation albums.

A year later his first solo single appeared, a Czech version of Henry Mancini's "Moon River," and Gott subsequently ended his official studies at the conservatory, quickly building an impressive career as a singer and composer. Karel Gott (14 July 1939 – 1 October 2019) was a Czech pop singer.

Karel Gott, the top-selling Czech pop singer with a silky smooth tenor who shot to stardom under Communism and remained popular after the 1989 Velvet Revolution, has died. He was 80.

Dubbed the “Sinatra of the East” by the local press while on tour in Germany in 1967, Gott was voted the nation’s most popular singer 42 times. His original songs and covers of Western pop hits helped him sell tens of millions of records.

Gott’s wife, Ivana, announced his death on Wednesday on the singer’s official website. He had announced in September he was battling acute leukemia. Tributes flowed in from Czech celebrities and Prime Minister Andrej Babis proposed a state funeral for Gott.

The singer gained international notice in 1968 with his song “Lady Carneval,” which won a gold medal at a music contest in Brazil. He built up a worldwide following during his 60-year career but was most popular in Germany and former Communist eastern European countries.

Unlike many other Czech artists, Gott performed at home and abroad after the 1968 Soviet-led invasion. His signing of the so-called “Anti-Charter” opposing the dissident Charter 77 statement also did little to dent his popularity.

Born on July 14, 1939, in Pilsen, Gott trained as an electrician before he began singing in cafes in Prague in the late 1950s. He was eventually admitted to the Prague Conservatory to study opera and got his break when hired at the avant-garde Semafor theatre in 1963.

Gott also performed in the west during the communist era. He spent six months in Las Vegas in 1967 and later returned to the United States, including two concerts at Carnegie Hall in 2000 and 2005.

In recent years, health problems had slowed the singer, but he promised to keep performing despite his illnesses. Gott is survived by two adult daughters from former relationships and two children born in 2006 and 2008 with his current wife. ---Michael Kahn, uk.reuters.com

Karel Gott karierę zaczynał w praskich kawiarniach w 1958. Pierwszego nagrania dokonał w 1960 (w języku angielskim). Pierwsze koncerty zagraniczne odbył w Polsce z Jazzową Orkiestrą Czechosłowackiego Radia w 1963. W tym samym roku został członkiem teatru (kabaretu) Semafor, gdzie nagrał też piosenkę Oči má sněhem zaváté (Oczy ma śniegiem zawiane), którą napisali Jiří Suchý i Jiří Šlitr, członkowie tegoż samego teatru. W 1967 wydał pierwszą płytę w niemieckiej wytwórni Deutsche Grammophongesellschaft. W 1967 roku przebywał na rocznym kontrakcie artystycznym w Las Vegas, co było początkiem jego światowej kariery. W 1971 przebywał na półrocznej emigracji w Niemczech Zachodnich. Władze komunistyczne niepokoiły się wiedząc, że jego emigracja miałaby negatywny wpływ na "normalizację" po Praskiej wiośnie. Gott zdecydował się powrócić do kraju głównie ze względu na swych rodziców. Występował na festiwalu sopockim w 1964 roku wykonując po polsku piosenkę Kot Teofil (III nagroda), a później już jako gwiazda - w latach 1970, 1975, 1986 i 2006. W 1969 przerwał protest po radzieckiej inwazji na Czechosłowację, wystąpił z długim recitalem i wykonał kilka piosenek. Wykonywał też w konspiracji w 1977 utwór Mój brat Jan ku czci Jana Palacha.

Tworzył między innymi piosenki pop, operowe i operetkowe arie, adaptacje klasycznych pieśni, narodowych i ludowych piosenek (folklor), aranżacje melodii z musicali i country. Szczególnie znane jest jego wykonanie arii z WestSide Story - Maria. Wykonał lub adaptował w języku czeskim wiele światowych przebojów min. Lady Carnival, El Condor pasa, By the rivers of Babylon, Hot Stuff. Tylko w 2008 stworzył duet z niemieckim raperem Bushido w utworze "Für immer jung", koncertował w Kanadzie, Izraelu, Rosji, Niemczech oraz odbył swoje kolejne długie tournée po Czechach.
