On her seventh Christmas collection, songstress Anne Murray croons her way through some of the season's most beloved songs. Released in her 63rd year, Anne Murray's Christmas Album (which features five new recordings and ten previously released tracks) rivals holiday compilations from artists half the Canadian songbird's age. Classic numbers such as "Joy to the World" and "Silver Bells" sound as if they were written with no other artist in mind but Murray. On the latter, the singer, backed by a heavenly vocal choir and a silky orchestra, offers up a delightful reading of an ear-pleasing composition that has become as much a part of Christmas as a glass of eggnog and a fire crackling in the hearth. Murray gets in the holiday spirit as she struts her way through a jangly version of "Winter Wonderland" and later lilts beautifully on a soul-piercing cover of "Silent Night." An aching rendition of "Blue Christmas" finds Murray, in a voice as delicate as freshly fallen snow, warming the listener's heart while she gently breaks it at the same time. Curling piano licks bathed in satiny strings float softly around Murray's vocals. Guests on the album include fellow Canadians Michael Bublé and Diana Krall. ---Todd Sterling, Rovi

For her 34th studio album, Anne Murray recorded a set of duets with many of her favorite female singers, from Nelly Furtado to Sarah Brightman. There are a number of country duet partners here, such as Shania Twain, Emmylou Harris, and Martina McBride, but there are even more pop-oriented women singing with Murray, encompassing the likes of Celtic Woman and Celine Dion. This makes perfect sense, as Murray's always straddled the pop-country fence effortlessly. Her singing on Duets: Friends and Legends is just as effortless. Now in her fifth decade as an active recording artist, her voice hasn't lost a beat, sounding just as pure and clear as it did on 1970s "Snowbird" (done here with a surprisingly relaxed, easy vocal from Brightman, sounding for all the world like a young Olivia Newton-John).

The majority of these songs are ones which have been sizeable hits for Murray in the past, most of which work nicely recast as duets, or at least showcases for harmony singing. There are exceptions, of course: sadly, the late Dusty Springfield's voice doesn't fit "I Just Fall in Love Again" at all, and Nelly Furtado sounds mightily out of place on "Daydream Believer." But for each of those there's an Emmylou Harris on "Another Pot o' Tea," k.d. lang matching Murray perfectly on "A Love Song," and most of all, Shania Twain showing up with what might be the best vocal of her career on the classic "You Needed Me." Murray clearly inspired most of her duet partners to bring their "A" games, and since she's pretty much always on hers (and Phil Ramone, of all people, provides sterling production which knows when to stay out of the way), what results is often magical. --- Thomas Inskeep, allmusic.com

Nobody likes Christmas more than Canadian singer Anne Murray, who first came into the public eye back in 1970 with the million-selling crossover single "Snowbird." Since that time, Murray has recorded three Christmas albums, each soothing, unassuming celebrations of the holiday. For this two-CD collection, Murray has gone back into her own vaults and dusted off some of her personal favorites from past albums and tied them up in tinsel and a big red bow. But she didn't just rely on her existing catalog, instead heading into the studio to record some new material, giving old standards like "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas," "Let It Snow," and a well-chosen medley of children's holiday songs her same straightforward approach. While there are few surprises under this tree, it's nice to have some traditions that you can count on, and Murray's warm heart and steady voice is one of them. Also on board for this sleigh ride is the prestigious London Symphony Orchestra, which is featured on six songs, including "Silent Night," "Away in the Manger," and "Winter Wonderland." ---Jaan Uhelszki, Editorial Reviews

This is just a wonderful CD. Certainly puts you in the Christmas mood, and brings back plenty of wonderful memories. Anne Murray is certainly one of our greatest entertainers today. --- R. F. Pleau "starnebula" (HUDSON, NH United States)

Warm-hearted and tender-voiced, Anne Murray's lovely, inspirational music is perfectly paired with songs of devotion, praise, and faith on this double-disc collection. Of those as seen on TV compilations, there is only one song not available elsewhere, the delightful "Let There Be Love," recorded with her daughter Anne. One listen to these 26 enchanting, inspirational classics and any listener will be lost in devotional prayer. ---James Conde, Editorial Reviews

Anne Murray's pipes are in great working condition on this new CD. Not only are the songs inspirational, but Anne is also an inspiration to all other "older" singers. Over the past decade, Anne has diversified her recording and strayed away from the formulaic same-sound-as-the-last-CD that perpetuates so many younger singers CDs (Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey to name a few). The result is confirmation of her status not only as a great singer but one with artistic integrity. Though many songs on this CD are of the religious variety, there are plenty more contemporary tracks here to satisfy all - including one of the best tracks off of her previous self-titled studio album - "The Other Side" (hopefully the second single). "Let There Be Love" and "Elijah" will please her younger fans. Classy and confident. Good show Anne. ---amazon.com
