There may have been a change of personnel, but Warsaw Village Band are still one of the most adventurous, exciting groups in Europe. Matching the thrilling, harsh-edged vocals of their two female singers Magdalena Sobczak-Kotnarowska and Sylwia Swiatkowska against slinky bass riffs, percussion and wild violin work (with a dash of dulcimer, trumpet or traditional Płock fiddle added in), they create an edgy reworking of folk styles that can switch between furious dance pieces and passages of quirky, quietly thrilling a cappella vocals. They have been travelling in Scandanavia and North America, and the best songs are collaborations. The opening track, which apparently translates as Hey You, Yokel's Son, is a wailing, stomping workout in which they are joined by the bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy of the Swedish band Hedningarna, while on War's Coming they are helped by singer Sandy Scofield, for what sounds like a wild exercise in folk-trance music, with dub effects added in. The International success of their „Uprooting” album and BBC World Music Award opened up many varied opportunities for the band worldwide. Valuable Polish music business awards - Fryderyk and Machinery as well as other Polish and foreign awards confirmed the Warsaw Village Band’s special place on the musical map.

Now the band have invited creative and innovative artists, producers and composers to collaborate with them. Apart from passion, unpretentiousness and openness they all have one more thing in common - phenomenal musical imagination.

It appears that folk music and club culture have many similar attributes – aren’t their function and message similar? What, apart from the era, is the difference between traditional dance and euphoria of crazy dancing in a club?

„Upmixing”, is the futuristic realisation of the band’s latest studio album – „Uprooting”. It‘s a meeting with the best producers and DJ’s in Europe. You can hear here the work of UK giants - Trans-Global Underground, Zion Train and Love Grocer, French global dancefloor stars - Dj ClicK and Recycler. Unreleased and forgotten from the „Uprooting” recording sesssions was a track by Warsaw Village Band which was fortuitously found and beautifully re-arranged by Louis Beckett of On-U Sound/Asian Dub Foundation fame.

Long-time band collaborator Mario Activator Dziurex along with Jarek Smok, both of AS One Studio, took their guitars and created a background for the story of Jamaican bobo dread warrior Lutan Fyah. All Sunrises played in their full live line-up and DJ Dubbist of Vavamuffin (Ba-Lan) has for the first time showed his production skills alongside lyrical master Pablopavo. Many other spiritual masters also took up this apparently distant sound material of nuroots music and worked their magic. --- jaro.de

Not since the Pogues and Zap Mama has music this deeply rooted in tradition sounded this crazily postmodern. The Warsaw Village Band plays and sings Polish folk music, using hurdy gurdy, fiddle, frame drum, zither, the occasional trumpet and more; they sing with that wild, reedy, open-throated sound and with modal harmonies that you associate with Balkan choral groups. But on Uprooting their ensemble is augmented by the turntablism of DJ FeelX (who lends elegantly understated layers of sound to "Josef Lipinski" and "When Johnny Went to Fight in the War") as well as contributions by more predictable compatriots Janina and Kazimierz Zdrzalik, the Lipsk Women's Choir and the Marian Pelka Band. Not everything here is a complete success; "At the Front of the Gates" spends a little bit too long dragging along on a single chord, as does the bizarrely titled (or, more likely, awkwardly translated) "I've Slayed the Rye." But the subtle reggae inflections of "Matthew" are a delightful surprise, and "Let's Play, Musicians!" eerily and beautifully evokes medieval chant despite the slightly socialist-realist title. And the xylophone on "When Johnny Went to Fight in the War" lends a touch of Tiki-flavored exotica to the proceedings that nicely upends its general Eastern European ambience. Wciąż jest to próba wskrzeszenia żywego, pełnego energii folkowego grania, jednak grupa coraz dalej odchodzi od utartych standardów w polskiej muzyce folkowej. Podstawowa różnica, to kontrasty. Z jednej strony mamy tu zaproszonych muzykantów ludowych (jak Kazimierz i Janina Zdrzalikowie, czy Kapela Mariana Pelki), których krótkie utwory urozmaicają płytę. Z drugiej zaś, zaproszono do udziału DJ Feel-X'a, człowieka współtworzącego niegdyś hip-hopowy Kaliber 44. Zarówno tradycyjne, ludowe granie, jak i delikatne skrecze nie psują nastroju tej płyty. Warto do niej wracać i odkrywać co róż na nowo. ---Taclem, folkowa.art.pl
