The Platinum & Gold Collection series is a great idea. The biggest hits by Arista-BMG artists collected on one CD with a detailed biographical history of the group and chart positions for each of their hits.

Let's get the only "negative" out of the way from the get-go: the first beat of the group's biggest hit, "The Sign," is missing. This was also the case with the Arista-released "ACE OF BASE: Greatest Hits" which means they are using a master or submaster with a glitch.

That aside, you get to trace the history of the group - as it played out in the U.S. anyways... which is where Arista/BMG sold 10,000,000+ copies of Ace of Base albums from 1993-2001. The history of the group is the most comprehensive and thougthful writeup on Ace of Base by an American music aficionado in years. We even get an acknowledgement of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the band's original lead singer, the blonde-haired Malin Berggren. Brunette, Jenny Berggren, now does a superb job of steering the group with their European music focus. Whether Ace of Base ever have another new release in the U.S. is up in the air.

In the interim, take a trip down memory lane and enjoy the highlights of Ace of Base's American run... mega hits like "All That She Wants," "The Sign," "Don't Turn Around," "Beautiful Life," and "Cruel Summer." And in between are the modest Top 100 hits like "Whenever You're Near Me," "Lucky Love," "Living in Danger" and also the songs that started the Ace of Base phenom - "Wheel of Fortune" and "Happy Nation." There are also some interesting versions of songs with notable remixes like the D-House mix of "Living in Danger," the Metro Mix of "Everytime it Rains" (Metro was the team that produced Cher's mega-hit "Believe") and the original mix of "Lucky Love" that was released in Europe. Comprised of vocalists Jenny Berggren and Linn Berggren, and keyboardists Jonas "Joker" Berggren and Ulf "Buddah" Ekberg, the Swedish quartet Ace of Base became a phenomenally popular international act with their 1993 debut album, The Sign. Ace of Base's simple, melodic Euro-disco was equally popular on radio and in the clubs, earning the quartet three U.S. Top Ten singles -- "All That She Wants," "Don't Turn Around," and "The Sign," which spent six weeks at number one.

Before the quartet formed in 1990, sisters Jenny and Linn Berggren sang in local church choirs in Gothenburg, Sweden. Their brother, Jonas, played synthesizers and wrote songs with Ulf Ekberg. Eventually, Jonas and Ulf recruited Jenny and Linn to sing with them, and the quartet began playing dance music at local clubs in the late summer of 1990. Within a year, the group signed with Mega Records and released their debut single, "Wheel of Fortune," in 1992. By that time, the quartet had joined forces with John Ballard, who produced their recordings and wrote the majority of their songs; occasionally, Ballard co-wrote with Jonas Berggren. "Wheel of Fortune" became a hit across Scandinavia, and soon the German-based record label Metronome signed a European distribution deal with the group. "All That She Wants" was Ace of Base's first single in Europe and, thanks to heavy exposure on MTV, the song became a number one hit in ten different countries. In the spring of 1993, Ace of Base released their European debut album, Happy Nation.

"All That She Wants" was released in America in the fall of 1993 and quickly went platinum, beginning a string of platinum Top Ten singles in the U.S.. Released in the fall of 1993, Ace of Base's American debut album The Sign -- a reconfigured version of Happy Nation, featuring four new songs -- quickly sold nearly two million copies in the U.S.. Throughout 1994, Ace of Base dominated radio in America and Europe as "All That She Wants," "Don't Turn Around," and "The Sign" received heavy airplay on a number of radio formats, including Top 40, adult contemporary, urban, and, bizarrely, modern rock. By the end of the year, The Sign had sold over eight million copies in the U.S. alone. Ace of Base was nominated for three Grammys that year, including Best New Artist.

Ace of Base released their second album, The Bridge, in the fall of 1995. Although it went platinum in its first six months of release, the record failed to duplicate the remarkable multi-platinum success of The Sign. Swedish pop group Ace of Base are best known for their second single, "All That She Wants", which was an international smash hit in late 1992. A year later they had another huge hit: "The Sign" topped the Hot 100 for six weeks.

Ace of Base were formed in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1990 and consist of siblings Jonas, Linn and Jenny Berggen, and Ulf Ekberg. After dabbling with a variety of musical styles and some line-up changes the band arrived at their jaunty new wave pop sound and embarked on a multi-platinum career.

After the failure of their first single, the follow up "All That She Wants" went to the Top 10 all over Europe and subsequently achieved worldwide success. Their debut album Happy Nation was a European hit before being reworked for the American charts. The reworking was a success and the single "The Sign" spent six weeks at No.1 in the US, finding its way into adverts for McDonalds and Texaco.

The band's follow up album The Bridge saw a change in style, ditching the reggae rhythms in favour of a softer approach and including some ballads. The record subsequently went platinum but it failed to match the impact of their debut.

The third album was another change and included Motown and gospel themes; it was named Cruel Summer after the success of the band's cover of the Bananarama single of the same name. ---amazon.com
