Australian brother-and-sister duo Angus and Julia Stone have had Top 10 albums in their home country, but in 2010 they decided to part ways and release a couple of solo albums apiece. Now they’ve reunited for a third LP, landing the services of super-producer Rick Rubin. His touch is noticeable; the influences of Neil Young and Joanna Newsom are still there, but there’s a gloss that was previously missing. The biggest difference, though, comes from the Stones writing together for the first time. Their records once had a two-sided feel, Angus’ songs lacking the drama of his sister’s, Julia lacking her brother’s restraint. Here, particularly on ‘Death Defying Acts’ and ‘Little Whiskey’, they’ve got the balance just right. --- nme.com

Australian sibling folk-rock duo Angus & Julia Stone broke big with their 2010 sophomore album, Down the Way. The album, which debuted at number one in Australia, took home five ARIA music awards, including Album of the Year. On the heels of their success, the famously shy duo began work on a follow-up, but eventually shelved the idea in favor of taking some time off to pursue solo work. However, coaxed back into the studio by super-producer Rick Rubin, the Stone siblings eventually returned to their ruminative, melodic, and often melancholy collaborations with 2014's Angus & Julia Stone. In many ways, what you see is pretty much what you get from the Stones, with their shaggy hair and hippie-chic clothes matching their penchant for acoustic introspection. Indeed, there aren't too many surprises here, with the siblings sticking to their formula: intimate, folky songs with poignant lyrics that usually bend toward the darker, sadder aspects of life. What commands your attention, however, is the way that Julia's cherubic, sandpaper doll of a voice contrasts with Angus' more clear-toned and casual vocal style. They also display a knack for coming up with lyrics that contain bittersweet, poetic juxtapositions, always hinting at deeper, more complex emotions. On "Other Things," duetting in clipped unison phrases, they sing "Go put the cat outside/'Cos we've got things to do," and "There's a plane in the sky/If those people fall they will die/I've got other things on my mind." It's this kind of focus on the ennui, the mundane tragedy that permeates many people's daily lives, that works as creative fodder for Angus & Julia Stone. Ultimately, it's that ennui, combined with the pair's heartbreaking sense of melody, that makes this album a delightfully sad yet engaging listen. ---Matt Collar, AllMusic Review

With its mix of vocal harmony, acoustic guitars, and brushed percussion, Angus & Julia Stone's debut recalls the lush, cuddle-up-in-bed indie folk of the Weepies and KaiserCartel. A Book Like This takes strength from its two young songwriters, both of whom approach love and coming-of-age issues from their own gendered perspective. Julia Stone plays the part of the quirky ingénue, her vocals fluttering like a young Joanna Newsom over homespun melodies and gauzy instrumental backdrops. "I blame you, Hollywood," she softly chastises, "for showing me things you never should show a young girl." Strings and glockenspiels chime in the background, swirling around the refrain before giving way to "Just a Boy," where brother Angus details an awkward encounter with the fairer sex. He matches his sister's soft, unadorned croon throughout the album, whether he's helming G-rated material like "Bella" (sample lyric: "There goes the gal in the pretty skirt with the golden smile") or planning a visit to a friend's house for the sole purpose of getting stoned ("Jewels and Gold"). Drug references notwithstanding, the bulk of this debut revels in its own adolescence, focusing on fairy tale folk songs and pastoral imagery. For those who have a taste for such fanciful material, A Book Like This is an appropriate soundtrack for lazy Sunday afternoons and slow Monday mornings, when the pace of the world matches the relaxed gait of this band. ---Andrew Leahey, AllMusic Review

Kariera muzyczna Angus & Julia Stone rozpoczęła się w 2006 mimo, że rodzeństwo występowało wcześniej, to właśnie ten rok jest liczony, jako data oficjalnego zaistnienia w przestrzeni muzycznej. 2006 stanowi moment wydania ich pierwszego debiutanckiego albumu "Chocolates and Cigarettes", gdzie Julia zajęła się partiami wokalnymi, a Angus przejął pieczę nad gitarą oraz trąbką. Tytuł, albumu został wymyślony przez Julię, która sama mówiła "uwielbiam zarówno czekoladki jak i papierosy, ale staram się mniej uwielbiać papierosy – palę jedynie po występach".

Między 2007, a 2009 rokiem ukazał się drugi album Angusa i Julii Stoneów: "A Book Like This" (grudzień 2007). Ich singiel "Paper Aeroplane" znalazł się na 43 miejscu na liście Tripple J Najgorętszych 100 kawałków muzycznych 2006 roku. W 2007 Stoneowie ruszyli w swoją pierwszą trasę koncertową po Australii, na którą bilety zostały wyprzedane w rekordowo krótkim czasie. Reszta 2007 roku minęła grupie na dzieleniu czasu scenicznego pomiędzy Australię, a Wielką Brytanię – w obydwu miejscach byli oni dosłownie rozchwytywani, czego przykładem jest bardzo wypełniona trasa koncertowa po UK, Irlandii, Szkocji oraz uczestnictwo, jako suport dla The Magic Numbers, czy wygrana na festiwalu the Latitude.

W 2009 roku album "A Book Like This" przebył ocean i trafił do sprzedaży w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Był to też czas, kiedy w grupie doszło do chwilowego rozłamu. W tym okresie Angus wydał swój solowy album "Smoking Gun", pod pseudonimem Lady of the Sunshine. Krążek dał mu 50 miejsce w zestawieniu ARIA. Czołowa piosenka ze Smoking Gun – "Big Jet Plane" została później (maj 2010) nagrana na nowo razem z Julią i wydana ponownie, jako singiel. ---chillizet.pl

Rick Rubin’s hirsute shadow still looms large over the Stones, who have decided to keep rolling since splitting up on the down-low in 2012. The super producer was the catalyst for their 2014 reunion after hearing them at a party and inviting them into his Malibu studio to reconnect and record. It resulted in their self-titled third album – their finest yet – and Rubin’s trick wasn’t just that dry Seventies drum sound. He insisted the siblings write in the same room together, and it’s a process they’ve stuck to for their fourth album, which was self-produced in Angus’ Byron Bay studio.

It seems fitting that they open proceedings with the call-and-response of “Snow”, which sees the pair swap verses like a less cloying Moldy Peaches (despite Julia’s chorus of “la la las”). The Stones are at their best when they’re playing off each other like this: Julia providing the strong but sympathetic counterpoint to her brother’s just-rolled-out-of-a-two-day-bender version of charm.

The use of a drum machine and a more expansive guitar palette is a marked difference from Rubin’s organic LA production. They even take a stab at indie-hop on “Baudelaire”, which works surprisingly well for two kids that grew up in Sydney’s northern beaches. (Straight outta Newport yo!)
