Lulu is a collaborative album between rock singer-songwriter Lou Reed, and heavy metal band Metallica. The conception of the collaboration project began in 2009 when both Metallica and Lou Reed performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 25th Anniversary Concert. After that performance, they began "kicking around the idea of making a record together," but did not start working together until two years later. In February 2011, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett announced that in May 2011 the group would start working on something that's "not 100 percent a Metallica record. It's a recording project, let's put it that way." The project was revealed to be a collaboration with Lou Reed once the recording of the album had been completed in June 2011.

The collaboration was originally intended to be Metallica re-recording various previously unreleased tracks Reed had written over the years. Among these unreleased demos was a collection of songs composed for a play called Lulu—a theatrical production of two plays originally written by the German playwright Frank Wedekind. Reed shared the demos of these songs with the members of Metallica to help bring the "piece to the next level," and the group provided "significant arrangement contributions" to the material. David Fricke of Rolling Stone heard at least two of the songs from the project in June 2011—"Pumping Blood" and "Mistress Dread"—and described their sound as a "raging union of [Reed's] 1973 noir classic, Berlin, and Metallica's '86 crusher, Master of Puppets."

The most immediately noticeable aspect of ...And Justice for All isn't Metallica's still-growing compositional sophistication or the apocalyptic lyrical portrait of a society in decay. It's the weird, bone-dry production. The guitars buzz thinly, the drums click more than pound, and Jason Newsted's bass is nearly inaudible. It's a shame that the cold, flat sound obscures some of the sonic details, because ...And Justice for All is Metallica's most complex, ambitious work; every song is an expanded suite, with only two of the nine tracks clocking in at under six minutes. It takes a while to sink in, but given time, ...And Justice for All reveals some of Metallica's best material. It also reveals the band's determination to pull out all the compositional stops, throwing in extra sections, odd-numbered time signatures, and dense webs of guitar arpeggios and harmonized leads. At times, it seems like they're doing it simply because they can; parts of the album lack direction and probably should have been trimmed for momentum's sake. Pacing-wise, the album again loosely follows the blueprint of Ride the Lightning, though not as closely as Master of Puppets. This time around, the fourth song -- once again a ballad with a thrashy chorus and outro -- gave the band one of the unlikeliest Top 40 singles in history; "One" was an instant metal classic, based on Dalton Trumbo's antiwar novel Johnny Got His Gun and climaxing with a pulverizing machine-gun imitation. As a whole, opinions on ...And Justice for All remain somewhat divided: some think it's a slightly flawed masterpiece and the pinnacle of Metallica's progressive years; others see it as bloated and overambitious. Either interpretation can be readily supported, but the band had clearly taken this direction as far as it could. To monumentalny, porażająca dźwiękiem, nagromadzeniem riffów i przepychem gitarowego grania album, w wersji winylowej dwupłytowy. Wydany w sierpniu 1988 roku, a nagrany już po tragicznej śmierci Cliffa Burtona. Utwory są tu długie. Trwają zwykle po osiem, dziewięć minut. Niektóre z nich to prawie mini suity – jak choćby rzecz tytułowa. Z delikatnym, akustycznym wstępem, z nagłymi zmianami nastroju, z pogmatwanym na różne sposoby rytmem. Można powiedzieć, że to chyba najbardziej ze wszystkich perkusyjna płyta zespołu. Lars Ulrich rządzi i dzieli. Niczym pan i władca z niezwykłą siłą napędza tę metalową nawałnicę pełnego patosu grania.

Jednak tak naprawdę ostro, czadowo jest jedynie w otwierającym album Blackened i zamykającym go Dyers Eve. Przytłaczające, thrashowe dźwięki gitarowe, wsparte nieco może zbyt delikatnym basem Jasona Newsteda i wspomnianym perkusyjnym motorem prą mocno do przodu. A gdy dodać do tego agresywniejszy niż na wcześniejszych płytach (szczególnie właśnie w Dyers Eve) śpiew Jamesa Hetfielda i oszałamiające mnogością dźwięków sola Kirka Hammetta… Pojawia się jakby nowy wymiar metalowego grania. Reszta płyty jest już nieco spokojniejsza, wyważona. Choć oczywiście nie ma to nic wspólnego z balladami (poza najsłynniejszą tu pozycją – One). Po prostu, każda kolejna kompozycja, czy będzie to Eye Of The Beholder (z doprawdy niesamowitym solem Hammetta) czy The Shortest Straw (z nieco synkopowanym podkładem) czy wreszcie Harvester Of Sorrow (z wokalnymi nakładkami Hetfielda w tle) to przede wszystkim mocne, „przysadziste” riffy. Zdawać by się mogło czasem, że grożące monotonią (wtedy na pewno przydają się poutykane tu i ówdzie akustyczne wstawki), nic jednak bardziej złudnego: ...And Justice For All nakręca się jak muzyczna sprężyna pękająca w ostatnim, urwanym nagle utworze płyty.

Wspomnieć trzeba o prawdziwych perłach. Oczywiście – wspomniane już One, reakcja na historię młodego człowieka koszmarnie okaleczonego przez wojnę (film Daltona Trumbo, Johhny poszedł na wojnę). Jest też w dużej mierze instrumentalny To Live Is To Die (gdzieś tak w ósmej minucie pojawia się kilka wypowiedzianych zdań). Jedyna tu kompozycja, której współautorem jest Cliff Burton. Oba utwory bardzo piękne, z chwytającymi za serce melodiami. Ale obie również z dawką złości i agresji, mocno pesymistyczne. Zresztą jak cała ta płyta. Tak sarkastyczna. Krytyka wymiaru sprawiedliwości w utworze tytułowym, bunt przeciw machinie władzy w Eye Of Beholder, alienacja w The Shortest Straw to tylko niektóre tematy tekstów Jamesa Hetfielda. Ja mu wierzę. Myślę, że kilkanaście milionów ludzi, którzy przez te dwadzieścia lat kupili tę płytę – również. ---Grzesiek Kszczotek, terazmuzyka.pl

In 2000, Metallica was among several artists who filed a lawsuit against Napster for sharing the band’s copyright-protected material for free without the band members’ consent. A settlement was reached, and Napster became a pay-to-use service. Despite reaching number one on the Billboard 200, the release of St. Anger alienated many fans with the exclusion of guitar solos and the “steel-sounding” snare drum. A film titled Some Kind of Monster documented the recording process of St. Anger.

Metallica has released nine studio albums, two live albums, two EPs, twenty-two music videos, and forty-four singles. The band has won nine Grammy Awards, and has had five consecutive albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200, making Metallica the only band ever to do so. The band’s 1991 album, Metallica, has sold over 15 million copies in the United States, and 22 million copies worldwide, which makes it the 25th-highest-selling album in the country. The band has sold an estimated 100 million records worldwide as of the release of their latest album Death Magnetic. As of September 2008, Metallica is the fourth highest-selling music artist since the SoundScan era began tracking sales on May 25, 1991, selling a total of 51,136,000 albums in the United States alone.

It’s testament to the enduring appeal of Metallica’s early work that in recent years their live setlists have included almost nothing recorded after 1991’s Black Album. To that end, their 10th album is an attempt (and a more successful one than 2008’s patchy Death Magnetic) to replicate the glories of their first three. The back-to-basics approach serves them well. Recent single Hardwired is a thrillingly direct opener, almost matched in ferocity by the closing Spit Out the Bone. Elsewhere they sacrifice speed for heaviness. Even though Master of Puppets didn't take as gigantic a leap forward as Ride the Lightning, it was the band's greatest achievement, hailed as a masterpiece by critics far outside heavy metal's core audience. It was also a substantial hit, reaching the Top 30 and selling three million copies despite absolutely nonexistent airplay. Instead of a radical reinvention, Master of Puppets is a refinement of past innovations. In fact, it's possible to compare Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets song for song and note striking similarities between corresponding track positions on each record (although Lightning's closing instrumental has been bumped up to next-to-last in Master's running order). That hint of conservatism is really the only conceivable flaw here. Though it isn't as startling as Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets feels more unified, both thematically and musically. Everything about it feels blown up to epic proportions (indeed, the songs are much longer on average), and the band feels more in control of its direction. You'd never know it by the lyrics, though -- in one way or another, nearly every song on Master of Puppets deals with the fear of powerlessness. Sometimes they're about hypocritical authority (military and religious leaders), sometimes primal, uncontrollable human urges (drugs, insanity, rage), and, in true H.P. Lovecraft fashion, sometimes monsters. Yet by bookending the album with two slices of thrash mayhem ("Battery" and "Damage, Inc."), the band reigns triumphant through sheer force -- of sound, of will, of malice. The arrangements are thick and muscular, and the material varies enough in texture and tempo to hold interest through all its twists and turns. Some critics have called Master of Puppets the best heavy metal album ever recorded; if it isn't, it certainly comes close. W 1986 roku Metallica dokonała epokowego osiągnięcia, jakim było nagranie albumu "Master of Puppets". To przełomowy album w karierze zespołu i z pewnością dojrzalszy od poprzedników. Niemniej, łatwo zauważyć pewną zależność pomiędzy tym albumem a poprzednikiem. "Battery" posiada charakterystyczny, prawie punkowy klimat dobrze znany z "Fight Fire With Fire". Obecna jest również pół - ballada "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)". Na "Ride the Lightning" takową rolę pełnił "Fade to Black". Zespół zamieścił - podobnie jak na poprzedniku - utwór instrumentalny, a jest nim "Orion". Jak widać, cechy charakterystyczne, klimat i ułożenie utworów Metallica odzwierciedliła z poprzedniej płyty, jednak same kompozycje tu zawarte zdecydowanie różnią się i są bardziej urozmaicone.

W "Master of Puppets" zwraca uwagę balladowe przejście, wkraczające po jakże ciężkiej łupaninie. Sam utwór zawiera w sobie mnóstwo agresji ale i melodii, co świadczy tylko o dojrzałości kompozytorskiej i wykonawczej muzyków. "The Thing That Should Not Be" trochę monotonny, ale przyciąga swoją specyfiką i zmieniającym się rytmem. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" to mistrzowska ballada i zarazem mój ulubiony utwór na płycie. Choć nie od dziś wiadomo, że główny riff bardzo przypomina "Rainbow Warrior" brytyjskiej i mało znanej grupy Bleak House to jednak zupełnie mi to nie wadzi. Zespół pięknie rozbudował tę kompozycję oraz zachował idealną spójność między balladowym graniem a agresywnymi przejściami.

Mocnym punktem jest znakomity "Orion", posiadający surowy i gniewny początek i zakończenie. Najciekawsza jest jednak środkowa część utworu, w której Cliff Burton ma pole do popisu. Po raz kolejny udowodnił, że jest rewelacyjnym basistą i pokazuje, że na czterech strunach można grać melodyjnie. Również sola gitarowe są na wysokim poziomie. "Damage, Inc" zamyka album i podobnie jak pierwszy kawałek, naładowany jest thrashowo- punkowa wściekłością.

Nie pochwaliłem jeszcze sprawnej gry Urlicha i świetnego wokalu Hetfielda. Wszyscy czterej panowie odwalili tu kawał dobrej roboty i słychać, że dopracowali każdy szczegół, by krążek był majstersztykiem. ---rockmetalmusic-cd.blogspot.com

Metallica is an American metal band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California, United States when drummer Lars Ulrich posted an advertisement in The Recycler. Metallica’s line-up originally consisted of Ulrich, rhythm guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield, and lead guitarist Dave Mustaine. Mustaine was later fired due to problems with alcoholism and drug addiction - he went on to form the band Megadeth. Exodus guitarist Kirk Hammett took his place. Metallica has been through several bassists, including Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton (who died in a bus crash while the band was on tour), and Jason Newsted. The current bassist is Robert Trujillo, who joined in 2003. Metallica’s early releases included fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed them as one of the “big four” of the thrash metal sub-genre alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. The band earned a growing fan base in the underground music community and critical acclaim, with the 1986 release Master of Puppets described as one of the most influential and “heavy” metal albums. The band achieved substantial commercial success with Metallica (1991), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. With this release the band expanded its musical direction resulting in an album that appealed to a more mainstream audience. In 2000, Metallica was among several artists who filed a lawsuit against Napster for sharing the band’s copyright-protected material for free without the band members’ consent. A settlement was reached, and Napster became a pay-to-use service. Despite reaching number one on the Billboard 200, the release of St. Anger alienated many fans with the exclusion of guitar solos and the “steel-sounding” snare drum. A film titled Some Kind of Monster documented the recording process of St. Anger. Metallica has released nine studio albums, two live albums, two EPs, twenty-two music videos, and forty-four singles. The band has won nine Grammy Awards, and has had five consecutive albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200, making Metallica the only band ever to do so. The band’s 1991 album, Metallica, has sold over 15 million copies in the United States, and 22 million copies worldwide, which makes it the 25th-highest-selling album in the country. The band has sold an estimated 100 million records worldwide as of the release of their latest album Death Magnetic. As of September 2008, Metallica is the fourth highest-selling music artist since the SoundScan era began tracking sales on May 25, 1991, selling a total of 51,136,000 albums in the United States alone. Metallica gigs in Northern Ireland are a lot like buses. You wait 22 years for one, and then two come along at the same time. Each of the shows at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena sold out within 24 hours when tickets went on sale last December. To say the atmosphere is electric is some kind of monstrous understatement. The two-night stand is the US metal titans’ first visit to Ulster since braving bomb scares and collapsing stage sets at the Antrim Forum in 1988.

There are 13 trucks parked round the back of the Odyssey, which have brought some 58 tons of tour equipment to Belfast. There is an in-the-round stage that takes up nearly the whole of the Odyssey’s standing area, and enough pyrotechnics to start The Troubles II. Above us are lighting rigs shaped like coffins; around us speaker stacks the size of tanks.

On opening night, as support bands High on Fire (Venom without the songs) and Volbeat (Michale Graves-era Misfits without the songs) go through the motions, fans of all shapes and sizes fill up the arena.

There are grizzled old-timers who may not have seen the inside of a concert hall since that Antrim show, foreign diehards who religiously follow Metallica from one European enormo-dome to another (meet-and-greet videos posted later on YouTube reveal not a single Ulsterman or woman) and youngsters savouring their first gig.

As Metallica take the stage to customary intro ‘The Ecstasy of Gold’, they are so close we can see the whites of their eyes. ‘Do you like heavy?’ bellows frontman James Hetfield. ‘Do you want heavy? Metallica gives you heavy, baby!’

Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo rip into ‘That Was Just Your Life’ and ‘The End of the Line’ from latest album Death Magnetic, charging around like maniacs half their age. It’s a powerful entrance, but sadly the new material is as weak live as it is on record. Not even a magnificent laser show can hide the fact that these are riffs in search of a song.

Just when the gig seems to be hurtling off the rails, ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’, ‘Creeping Death’ and’ Fade to MetallicaBlack’ get old-school heads banging. Later, there are pummelling renditions of ‘Sad but True’, ‘Wherever I May Roam’, ‘One’, ‘Master of Puppets’, ‘Blackened’ and ‘Enter Sandman’.

On the second night, Metallica add ‘Harvester of Sorrow’, ‘The Four Horsemen’ and ‘Battery’ (as well as ‘Fuel’ and ‘The Memory Remains’, but let’s pretend we didn’t hear those).

The encore is perhaps the highlight of each show. Tuesday gives us a cover of ‘Breadfan’ by Budgie, ‘Whiplash’ and ‘Seek and Destroy’, while Wednesday delivers Queen’s ‘Stone Cold Crazy’, ‘Hit the Lights’ and ‘Seek…’

During the closing number, dozens of inflatable beach balls branded with the Metallica logo are released from the ceiling, leading to fights for the prized keepsakes among some fans. The violence makes a mockery of Hetfield’s raps about ‘the Metallica family’, but it seems apt for a band whose debut album is called Kill ‘Em All. ---culturenorthernireland.org

It was supposed to be released in Latin America only, but it's also available in Northern Europe.
