The Byrds were a popular American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1964. They are considered one of the most important and influential bands of the 1960s.

Their music bridged the gaps between the socially and spiritually conscious folk music of Bob Dylan, the studio trickery of The Beach Boys, and the sardonic rock of The Beatles. Some of their trademark songs include pop versions of Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man and Pete Seeger’s Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season), and the originals I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better, and Eight Miles High. Throughout their career they helped forge such subgenres as folk rock, raga rock, psychedelic rock, jangle pop, and – on their 1968 classic Sweetheart of the Rodeo – country rock inviting Gram Parsons on rhythm guitar.

The original and most successful lineup consisted of Chris Hillman, David Crosby, Michael Clarke, Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark. After several line-up changes (with lead singer/guitarist McGuinn as the only consistent member), they broke up in 1973.

In 1991 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and several band members launched successful solo careers after leaving the group. The most successful was David Crosby who was inducted again for his work with Crosby, Stills & Nash. Other than The Beatles, the only artist with all members inducted twice are, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. ---last.fm

The Byrds - amerykańska grupa powstała w 1964 roku w Los Angeles.Na przestrzeni lat zespół wielokrotnie zmieniał członków aż do rozpadu w 1973 roku. Mimo stosunkowo krótkiego czasu działalności, według wielu, popularnością dorównywał takim grupom jak: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones czy The Beach Boys.Do dziś zespół jest uważany za jedną z najbardziej wpływowych grup lat 60-tych ubiegłego wieku. Muzyka tworzona przez The Byrds określana jest jako folk rock i psychodeliczny rock pomieszany z popem.Do dziś twórczość The Byrds stanowi inspirację dla wielu artystów. W 2004 roku magazyn The Rolling Stone opublikował ranking stu artystów wszech czasów umieszczając zespół The Byrds na 45 miejscu. ---eska.pl

Mr. Tambourine Man is the debut album by the American folk rock band The Byrds and was released in June 1965 on Columbia Records. The album, along with the single of the same name, established the band as an internationally successful rock act and was also influential in originating the musical style known as folk rock. The term "folk rock" was, in fact, first coined by the U.S. music press to describe the band's sound in mid-1965, at around the same time that the "Mr. Tambourine Man" single reached the top of the Billboard chart. The single and album also represented the first effective American challenge to the dominance of The Beatles and the British Invasion during the mid-1960s.

The album peaked at No.6 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and reached No.7 in the United Kingdom. The Bob Dylan penned "Mr. Tambourine Man" single was released ahead of the album in April 1965, reaching No.1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. A second single from the album, "All I Really Want to Do", also a Dylan cover, was moderately successful in the U.S. but fared better in the United Kingdom, where it reached the Top 10. ---discogs.com

One of the greatest debuts in the history of rock, Mr. Tambourine Man was nothing less than a significant step in the evolution of rock & roll itself, demonstrating that intelligent lyrical content could be wedded to compelling electric guitar riffs and a solid backbeat. It was also the album that was most responsible for establishing folk-rock as a popular phenomenon, its most alluring traits being Roger McGuinn's immediately distinctive 12-string Rickenbacker jangle and the band's beautiful harmonies. The material was uniformly strong, whether they were interpreting Bob Dylan (on the title cut and three other songs, including the hit single "All I Really Want to Do"), Pete Seeger ("The Bells of Rhymney"), or Jackie DeShannon ("Don't Doubt Yourself, Babe"). The originals were lyrically less challenging, but equally powerful musically, especially Gene Clark's "I Knew I'd Want You," "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better," and "Here Without You"; "It's No Use" showed a tougher, harder-rocking side and a guitar solo with hints of psychedelia. ---Richie Unterberger, AllMusic Review

In 1972, Roger McGuinn's final version of the Byrds unceremoniously broke up, but the following year the group briefly reunited -- surprisingly enough, with the classic original lineup of McGuinn, Gene Clark, Michael Clarke, David Crosby, and Chris Hillman. However, if most of the participants meant for this to be anything more than a one-shot get-together, you couldn't tell from listening to the resulting album; Byrds never sounds much like a Byrds album, absent McGuinn's chiming 12-string guitar and the group's striking harmonies (the Byrds' twin aural calling cards). Much of the original material, especially David Crosby's, sounds like cast-offs from their other projects. And what sort of a Byrds album features two Neil Young covers and not a single Bob Dylan tune? In all fairness, Byrds has its moments: Gene Clark's "Full Circle" and "Changing Heart" are great songs from the group's least-appreciated member, and McGuinn's "Born to Rock 'n' Roll" is a top-notch rock anthem. But for the most part, Byrds sounds like a competent but unexciting country-rock band going through their paces, rather than the work of one of the best and most innovative American bands of the 1960s. ---Mark Deming, Rovi

When “Mr. Tambourine Man” first rumbled out of car radio speakers in 1965, it was a pivotal moment in pop history.

With its jangling 12-string and epic sweep, it was the dawn of a new day: the birth of folk-rock. And the Byrds were just getting started. The next two years saw one hit after another, from the Biblical prophesies of “Turn, Turn, Turn” to the raga-rock of “Eight Miles High”, from the exotic orchestration of “So You Want To Be A Rock ‘N’ Roll Star” to the Byrds bringing it all back home with “My Back Pages.” Here they are again, 30 landmark recordings in their perfectly constructed, radio-friendly mono mixes: the forgotten rarities, withdrawn singles and, of course, all the original A and B-sides.

No one has ever had a stronger run of singles than did the Byrds in their prime. No one. --- bootlegzone.com

"The Byrds' Greatest Hits" is their fifth album, and first compilation released August 7, 1967 on Columbia Records CL 2716 (Mono) and CS 9516 (Stereo) in the USA and October 20, 1967 in the United Kingdom BPG 63107 (Mono) and SBPG 63107 (Stereo). It is the top-selling album in the Byrds catalogue, reaching #6 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart in 1967 and certified a platinum-seller on November 21, 1986. In 2003, the album was ranked number 178 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

The album was first issued on CD by Columbia Records in 1985 and was later re-released in a remastered form in 1991 with alternative cover artwork. In the UK and Europe, this 1991 edition of the album was titled "Greatest Hits: 18 Classics Remastered" and included an additional seven bonus tracks taken from The Byrds' post "Younger Than Yesterday" career (a period not covered by the original album). The album was remastered at 20-bit resolution as part of the Columbia/Legacy Byrds series, reissued in an expanded form on March 30, 1999. The three bonus tracks included two of the remaining singles from this period, plus "It Won't Be Wrong." It was reissued again in the SACD format, with the same expanded track listing as on the 20-bit remaster, on January 30, 2001. ---discogs.com
