Metal outfit Arch Enemy has released already some live albums and DVD with the first one dating back in 1999, when the band recorded a show in Japan. After having published some more live recordings the question might come up why the quintet has with "As the Stages Burn!" a new one in the blocks.

This package covers one DVD featuring the entire Wacken show from 2016 and the same does the CD version. Arch Enemy performed a show in front of an enthusiastic crowd that went berserk during the show. Already the CD version gives this impression that even more strengthened by the DVD. Fans were joining in as a big metal choir during songs like "My Apocalypse", with Alissa White-Gluz constantly motivating them to get even louder. Band and fans celebrated a metal feast on August 6th which is now shared with Arch Enemy fans all over the world.

Next to the mentioned "My Apocalypse", Michael Amott and band played classics such as "Under Black Flags" and "Dead Eyes See No Future", all rounded off by an excellent version of Fields of Desolation" from the 1996 debut. Capturing and releasing this show as a DVD was a great idea and even though you might call one of the earlier live releases your own, it's this package that's still worth to go for.

The scenery is kept in the beginning is kept rather simple. White banners with AE are placed left and right, creating a focus on the might drum kit. With "Ravenous" these flags are gone, revealing the full view on the Black Stage. The filming itself is entertaining and done from various perspective. 13 cameras captured all aspects of this impressive show, directed by Patric Ullaeus (Europe, In Flames,...). And since Andy Sneap was responsible for mix and mastering the album comes with an excellent Dolby 5.1 sound too.

As usual, there's also an bonus connected to "s the Stages Burn!", showing some 'behind the scene' footage and there have been additional eight songs from the 2015 Tokyo show been added to this release. Last but not least some official videos from songs like the mighty "War Eternal" round off a quite comprehensive DVD package.

"As the Stages Burn!" is a brilliant package, presenting Arch Enemy in the here and now. This DVD is more than just a recording of a live show. It's a publication that was put together with a passion and a lot of attention for details. Even though you might call some of the earlier live releases your own, it's this packages brings a very intense metal show right into your living room and should therefor be part of every serious metal collection. ---mwiemetalblog.over-blog.com

Sounding like a particularly rotten day during the apocalypse, Arch Enemy is a ferocious gang of Swedish death metalers bent on throttling their listeners, and they succeed most magnificently on Wages of Sin. The Scandinavians in general are known most for their allegiance to black metal: atmospheric, epic-sounding, satanic-leaning stuff which they invented. But Arch Enemy, who includes members and former members of Carcass, Armageddon, and Mercyful Fate, is more death than black, but there's a little bit of everything in their mix of Sepultura-like riffage; mid-'80s classic, over-the-top metal solos; meat-cleaver-style hooks; and dirty Florida swamp-style death metal. Of course, death metal can easily become monotonous, but this is not at all the case with Arch Enemy, whose songwriting is way above par. Wages of Sin is the first album from the band featuring their new singer, Angela Gossow, a German blonde whose vocals never sound as if they could possibly be emanating from a woman. Rather, they sound like a guttural blast from the sewers of purgatory. She is just the right touch to add to a band who ranks among metal's most progressive and unique outfits. ---Adam Bergman, AllMusic Review

Formed by ex-Carnage, Carcass, and Candlemass guitarist Michael Amott (also of Spiritual Beggars) with his brother Christopher (Armageddon), Arch Enemy took a straight-ahead approach to death metal reminiscent of Entombed or late-period Carcass, blending catchy, classic-style metal riffs with crushing grooves for an intense yet accessible sound. The group's charter lineup was rounded out by bassist/vocalist Johan Liiva (Carnage, Furbowl) and drummer Daniel Erlandsson (Eucharist, session work for In Flames); they released their debut album, Black Earth, in 1996. For their second album, 1998's Stigmata, Armageddon bassist Martin Bengtsson took over those duties from vocalist Liiva, while Armageddon drummer Peter Wildoer sat in for Erlandsson. More personnel turnover ensued, as Mercyful Fate reunion bassist Sharlee D'Angelo (also formerly of Witchery and Dismember) joined up for 1999's Burning Bridges, which also featured the return of Erlandsson. Wages of Sin from 2001 found Johan Liiva departing and replaced by Angela Gossow.

After touring extensively across Europe and Japan, the band returned to the studio and released Anthems of Rebellion in 2003. The EP Dead Eyes See No Future was released by the end of the year and featured a mix of cover versions and live tracks. The album Doomsday Machine landed in July of 2005 just as guitarist Christopher Amott announced he was leaving the band. Former Tiamat member Fredrik Åkesson replaced him, though the two would switch places again two years later, with Åkesson leaving the band to join Opeth, and Amott taking back his spot on guitar. The band then released its seventh album, Rise of the Tyrant, in 2007. The album would be Arch Enemy's most successful to date, and they followed up the release by heading out on tours with Swedish metal giants Opeth and Dark Tranquillity. In 2009, the band looked back to its older material with The Root of All Evil. The album featured tracks from the band's first three albums that were re-recorded with current singer Angela Gossow. 2011's Khaos Legions, the band's eighth studio long player, marked a return to new original material, and proved to be the band's highest-charting album to date. It would also be the last outing for Gossow and founding guitarist Christopher Amott, both of whom left the band the following year. 2014's War Eternal saw the additions of ex-Agonist vocalist Alissa White-Gluz and ex-Arsis guitarist Nick Cordle (who left shortly before the band's European tour and was replaced by former Nevermore axe-slinger Jeff Loomis). In 2017, the band released the concert LP/video As the Stages Burn, which captured their 2016 performance at Wacken Open Air in its entirety, along with a 2015 performance in Tokyo.

Liers In Wait, In Flames, Diabolique, Eucharist, Carcass) i Christopher Amott (gitara, Armageddon).

---rmf.fm

The eighth studio album by Swedish melodic death metal powerhouse Arch Enemy (assuming one doesn't count the re-recordings compilation The Root of All Evil) is superficially as strong as anything else in the band's impressive catalog. Since the day frontwoman Angela Gossow joined, Arch Enemy has been one of the most consistent bands in metal, cranking out 11 or 12 fist-pumping, anthemic tracks every couple of years. This album features 11 songs, a silly intro with narration like something from a movie trailer or a video game, and two brief instrumental interludes, one of which treads perilously close to "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," but is just different enough to keep the lawyers at bay. That's not the only bit of almost-plagiarism here; the pre-chorus to "Thorns in My Flesh" bears a disconcerting melodic resemblance to Pet Shop Boys' "It's a Sin." The title and intro section of "Cruelty Without Beauty" seem like loving imitations of South of Heaven-era Slayer, and the same song, in its final two minutes, erupts into a fury of retro-thrashy guitar soloing, with one player doing his best Dave Mustaine as the other pretends he's Kirk Hammett. Meanwhile, "Yesterday Is Dead and Gone" sounds like a combination of three or four previous Arch Enemy songs. Still, Khaos Legions shouldn't be dismissed as the result of creative burnout -- there's plenty of scorching metal here, and fans will be very pleased. ---Phil Freeman, AllMusic Review
