Collected from live recordings while the group was touring New Zealand in 1976, this set clearly illustrates how a British Invasion group survived the '70s by simply cranking out one great record after another. That the band could deliver the goods in person, including those trademarked three-part harmonies, is no small achievement in those pre-digital, pre-sampled times.

While the group stays Ôcurrent, with the tell-tale wah wah pedal and the crude synth lines, they're still unmistakably the Hollies, and as they blast through a set that includes everything from "Bus Stop," "Just One Look," and "Carrie Anne" to "Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress)," "The Air That I Breathe," and "He Ain't Heavy...He's a Brother," one is struck by the sheer professionalism with which they pull this all off without tricks, illusions, or mirrors. While the Hollies didn't break through in the U.S. with the same force as the Beatles or the Who, they were still one of the strongest groups of the British Invasion, and their prolific output and constant evolution were as bold as even the most shape-shifting of their peers. Radio Fun is a testament to the Hollies' ever-changing face as well as their strength as a live entity, collecting a dizzying 32 tracks recorded between 1964 and 1971 for various BBC programs such as Top of the Pops, Saturday Club, and Top Gear. The collection captures the band in its prime, roving from early R&B and Merseybeat-style rave-ups to Everly Brothers-inspired pop harmonies to more rambling rock material as the '60s wore on. Radio Fun isn't presented in chronological order, so the disc begins with the band's light-hearted beat romper "Here I Go Again" from 1964 and jumps ahead four years with the considerably more groovy and psychedelic pop of "Jennifer Eccles." The collection also spans three lineup changes for the group, seeing both bassist Eric Haydock and founding member Graham Nash cycle out of the band over the album's course, the loss of the latter altering the band's sound greatly. With the exception of "Bus Stop," many of the Hollies' greatest hits are absent from these sessions. Their blue-eyed renditions of soul classics like "That's How Strong My Love Is" and Sam Cooke's rowdy "Shake" highlight the band's R&B roots, and lesser-known tunes like "The Games We Play" and "Wishyouawish" show the group experimenting with brass arrangements and increasingly complex harmonies. In classic BBC style, a lot of the songs start abruptly, the introductions probably being yapped over by a DJ on the original recordings. The sessions are raw, mostly mono affairs, which works both for and against the overall flow of Radio Fun. It's great to hear the bright harmonies and direct, unproduced performances of the band at its tightest and most hungry. After a while, however, even the most devoted fans might have to take a step away from the collection's incredibly extensive amassment of sounds, which can become monotonous when taken in one sitting. When examined bit by bit, the collection has countless examples of the Hollies' brilliance, with the more obscure later material and most revved-up earliest R&B covers offering a candid picture of a hard-working band having fun in a long-stretching heyday. ---Fred Thomas, allmusic.com

In The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock'n'Roll, Lester Bangs wrote of the Hollies, "During the British invasion, they were mostly just bad, grinding out sloppy covers of 'Stay, ' 'Do You Love Me, ' 'Lucille' and 'Memphis' in the most shamelessly churn-'em-up, bash-'em-out Liverpudlian manner." While this is an unfair overgeneralization, it's basically an accurate assessment of their first album, which contains all of the above-mentioned cuts. The group stuck to the tried-and-true rock/R&B cover staples of dozens, if not hundreds, of British bands circa 1963 on this 14-cut LP, which featured only one original composition. The Hollies' harmonic blend had yet to fully coalesce; there's plenty of energy, but the voices are adenoidal (and not always in perfect key) and the performances almost embarassingly callow. Nonetheless, the album was a huge hit in Britain, reaching number two and staying in the Top Ten for 18 weeks. "Stay" itself had been their first U.K. Top Ten hit in late 1963, and the album's best track, the edgy R&B/harmony rendition of "Watcha Gonna Do 'Bout It," was one of their better early cuts. The group also covers Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, Conway Twitty, "Rockin' Robin," and "Mr. Moonlight" (before the Beatles) on this set. ---Richie Unterberger, AllMusic Review

The Hollies are a well-respected British beat and rock and roll band that formed in the early 60s. Initially they had a squeaky-clean image and were famous for their rich vocal harmonies, rivaling those of The Beach Boys. Between 1964 and 1969, only two Hollies songs failed to reach the UK Top 10. Their most famous member was Graham Nash, who left in 1968 to form the folk supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash. Two of the core members, drummer Bobby Elliott and lead guitarist Tony Hicks, still perform with The Hollies into the new millennium.

Frequent releases during the mid-60s included many cover versions of popular songs, as well as a few group-penned hits and many songs written especially for them by professional songwriters.

The Hollies were formed in 1962 in Lancashire, England. By 1965,the group had been established as one of Britain's pre-eminent singles bands. As part of the British Invasion, they enjoyed huge chart success in many countries in the mid-Sixties, releasing a string of classic harmony-pop hits including Bus Stop I'm Alive, a UK No. 1, I Can't Let Go, Stop Stop Stop, Carrie Anne, On A Carousel, Look Through Any Window, and Jennifer Eccles.

In 1972, the hit Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress reached #2 in the US. Their last mega hit was He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, hitting #1 in the UK in 1988 (albeit 19 years after its first release).

The band are noted for their longevity, with their 2006 tour chalking up 45 years. Despite numerous changes in line-up, Tony Hicks & Bobby Elliott have been with the band almost from its inception.

Lead singer Allan Clarke left The Hollies in 1971, though he rejoined the band at later times. He was eventually replaced by Carl Wayne, ex lead singer of The Move, who passed away in 2004. Wayne was replaced by Peter Howarth. The 2007 line up is, Ian Parker on keyboards, Ray Stiles (Ex Mud, remember 'Tiger Feet') on bass guitar and Alan Coates on guitar and vocals by Steve Lauri.

The Hollies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 15, 2010.
