Switzerland based rockers ‘Sideburn’ have just released “Electrify”, their first since the lineup change way back in 2012, three young guns in the form of Lawrence Lina with Mike Riffart on Guitars and Bass player Nick Thornton joined the old pro’s Roland Pierrehumbert on Vocals, and Lionel Blanc on Drums to bring us a very very good hard rock album.

The album opens with a thunderous “Bite The Bullet”, and continues in the same hard rock vein until “Black Powder” slows things down for a bit, but not for long though, as we have the mighty “Mr. Clean” that raises the tempo again. “Travellin`Man” brings a noticeable Blues element into the mix, while some light Country music influence can be heard on “Bad Reputation” and “Destination Nowhere”.

Although you may hear the influences of the Blues all over this album, this is a hard rock album that has a strong L.A. sleaze feel to it, think L.A. Guns, and possibly Great White. What Sideburn do is bring all those influences together in a slab of old school 80’s style rock. The overall production is slick, which will come as no surprise when you realize Beau Hill mixed it, that man is a genius. “Electrify” really lives up to its name, the guitar solos are great, adding depth to the songs as well as bite.

Some people may draw comparisons with AC/DC and to a lesser extent Airbourne on the first couple of listen’s, however I do not see it that way, as the more you listen to this album, the more of its own identity shines through, I see it as Sideburn, playing some great rock n roll.

‘Bad Boys, Bad Girls, Rock N Roll’ is for me the stand out track, however after a few listens, the slow burner ‘Black Powder’ is almost as good. What we have here is a quality opus with great songwriting, great playing, outstanding production and some nasty sleazy killer blues riffs.

On a side note, the song “Six feet under” (taken from their previous album “Cherry red”) has been chosen by 20th Century Fox to be used on the sound track to the film “The Wolverine”.

The CD version of this release includes the bonus tracks “Lazy Daisy Live”, “Never kill the chicken Live” &”Rockstar”, the download version only features the 11 original songs and the vinyl version which is only available in Switzerland includes only “Lazy Daisy Live” as bonus track. ---David Farrell, planetmosh.com

Sideburn, from Lausanne, Vaud, Switzerland.

Remember those kits you used to get when you were a kid with a load of paint and a board with a picture on it all covered in numbers? ‘Painting By Numbers’ it was called, and the new album from Switzerland’s Sideburn is essentially ‘AC/DC By Numbers’. If you like post For Those About To Rock era AC/DC, then Sideburn‘s Jail will appeal to you enormously. For me however, that is when the Aussie legends just became a parody of themselves — and emulating that era is, in my book, not a recipe for success.

Nothing on Jail is essentially bad — on the contrary, some of it is very cool — very ‘cruising down the highway with the top down’ type stuff. But it’s like Sideburn recorded the entire album with the brakes on. It never gets going and it never makes you feel like you’re flying by the seat of your pants the way Airbourne or Bullet do.

Sideburn‘s earlier releases seem rougher around the edges compared to the polish of the Beau Hill mixed Jail, and are far better for it in my opinion. This type of rock ‘n’ roll should be played whilst wearing road weary, scabby jeans and a five day old t-shirt, not with a set of brand new Levi’s with a crease down the front and your shirt tucked in.

The stand out track for me is “Good Boy”, where Sideburn stretch their legs a little and forget their AC/DC fixation and instead have a bit of fun pretending to be Judas Priest by blatantly stealing the “Hell Bent For Leather” chorus. On the whole though, if you want to listen to 12 tracks of Fly On The Wall outtakes you’ll enjoy this offering. But if you don’t fancy sitting through the equivalent of a pile of Young brother cast-offs you’d be better off spending your hard earned money on the new Bullet album. ---Hetfield’s Mullet,sleazeroxx.com

A Swiss band with not much in terms of sideburns, other than the name of course. They have managed to make eight albums under the Sideburn moniker, counting today’s release aptly named #Eight. And for that the quartet has accomplished thirteen tracks where one is a cover penned by the late Lemmy Kilmister and friends, so you can probably guess where the sound of this band is going. Not so much in the direction of Mustasch but more in terms of their countrymen Krokus or Gotthard but also the likes of Motörhead and their peers.

Classic hardrock with decent energy and a rather classic raw sound with good songs and a rather unoriginal approach, they sound a lot like anything else. I would say that if you have heard anything the band has done before you will know how this sounds because this is one of those bands who doesn’t change and who doesn’t evolve. It is not really a band you listen to when you want to hear something fresh and exciting, their music is a safe bet for those who fear change and want everything to stay the same. It is a classic heavy rock album with all that entails, and a rather typical exchange of songs.

I would describe this as neither better nor worse than what the band has done before, that means that we have a rather good hardrock album here. It is easy to take to thanks to its familiarity, which also makes it a little bit forgetful. I guess it works rather well for the people who usually listen to this kind of music and have you liked Sideburn in the past you will certainly like this album. But from a more critical standpoint it is more difficult to claim anything but mediocrity, especially from a more creative viewpoint.

In the end I think this is a rather average, or slimly above average hardrock album with pretty good songs, pretty good sounds and pretty good everything. You can listen to it for a while and then it takes a shorter while for you to forget all about it. Sideburns number eight is more or less the same as their previous seven, good but not really that impressive. ---Daniel Källmalm, hallowed.se
