Take a look around the hard rock landscape ever since the early '90s, and there has been an unmistakable lack of "manly metal bands." But with the emergence of acts like Airbourne, the aforementioned genre has certainly been given new life. All you need for proof is to inspect the front cover of the group's 2010 effort, No Guts. No Glory., which features beefcake lead singer/guitarist Joel O'Keeffe shirtless, muscles bulging, screaming, fist clenched, with Gibson Explorer held high, and of course, the obligatory scantily clad babe (among doodles of a roaring Mack Truck, a tornado, etc.). And the music certainly fits the bill to boot -- think of the slightly slick anthemic rock of Razor's Edge-era AC/DC and you have a good idea of where the Airbourne boys are coming from. Despite countless groups of the past finding it pretty darn daunting to slay the "sophomore slump" beast, Airbourne borrow a page out of their fellow Aussie heroes' handbook by following the same exact sonic game plan laid out on their debut, 2007's Runnin' Wild. The group easily recaptures the roar of its debut throughout No Guts. No Glory. From the get-go, Airbourne tear the roof off the sucker, especially on such loud 'n' proud rockers as the first single, "No Way But the Hard Way," as well as "Blonde, Bad and Beautiful" and "It Ain't Over Till It's Over." Elsewhere, tunes such as "Overdrive" are reminiscent of the Darkness' more straight-ahead rockers -- minus the over-the-top histrionics or playfulness of Justin Hawkins and company. With their debut album, Runnin' Wild, Melbourne, Australia's Airbourne add their name to a long list of Aussie and non-Aussie bands earnestly beholden to hard rock godfathers AC/DC. Although good timing may be on their side because, inevitable charges of cloning notwithstanding, there's arguably never been a greater need for fresh blood like Airbourne to come along and revive this hallowed form of basic, pub-born, boogie rock & roll. After all, 2007 marks the seventh anniversary (or, more appropriately, the seven year itch) since AC/DC delivered a studio album of their own, and that was the career lowlight Stiff Upper Lip, containing one great single and a lot of filler. So when compounded with Airbourne's natural, no-fuss songwriting instincts, even the most cynical of fans will likely be happy to put their suspicions aside, and simply enjoy the Runnin' Wild ride for what it's worth. And what it's worth, dear friends, is classic hard rock gold (if not platinum) epitomized by blue collar, straightforward, pint-lifting anthems like the title track, "Heartbreaker," and the rousing introduction of "Stand Up for Rock & Roll." Interestingly, along with instrumentally spare, mid-paced offerings such as "Diamond in the Rough," "Fat City," "What's Eating You," and even first single "Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast," Airbourne's overall aesthetic draws as much from Brian Johnson-era AC/DC as the more commonly emulated Bon Scott -- and perhaps this too is what helps to distinguish them from their more hopelessly indebted predecessors (hello, Rhino Bucket!). In any case, the biting attack brought to bear by lead shrieker and guitarist Joel O'Keeffe and his crew rarely falls short of electrifying results, but there's obviously an incrementally spine-tingling energy to be found in the album's faster-paced, hard-driving offerings such as "Blackjack," "Girls in Black," "Let's Ride" and the aforementioned title track. Finally, those still refusing to overlook the band's AC/DC-isms and focus on the songs are challenged to keep a smile off their faces during "Cheap Wine & Cheaper Women," which, like the rest of Runnin' Wild reminds us that it's really sort of stupid (and pointless) to resist the uplifting power of rock & roll, and therefore Airbourne themselves. Australia’s hard rock outfit Airbourne has a new album coming up, titled Black Dog Barking, which shall be released via Roadrunner Records on May 21st. Produced by award winning producer Brian Howes, this is Airbourne’s third album and the follow up to No Guts. No Glory., which was released back in 2010.

The Full Throttle edition of Airbourne’s new song “Live it Up”, the first single from Black Dog Barking, will be released for the opening of Full Throttle at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA, the tallest, fastest looping roller coaster in the world. The song will be released to rock radio in late spring, followed by its in-park debut at Six Flags Magic Mountain with the ride opening.
