The mix of topical songs, surreal antiwar anthems, and diffuse psychedelic mood pieces on The Twain Shall Meet is extremely ambitious, and while much of the group's reach exceeds its grasp, it's all worth a trip through as a fascinating period piece. In fact, the mood pieces predominate, mostly underwritten and under-rehearsed, and recorded without the studio time needed to make them work. "Just the Thought" and "Closer to the Truth" are dull and unfocused, even as psychedelia, while "No Self Pity" and "We Love You Lil" are above average musical representations of mind-altered states. "We Love You Lil" opens with a clever play on the old popular tune "Lili Marlene" that leads to an extended guitar jam and ethereal backing that rather recalls the early work of Focus, among other progressive rock acts. "All Is One" is probably unique in the history of pop music as a psychedelic piece, mixing bagpipes, sitar, oboes, horns, flutes, and a fairly idiotic lyric, all within the framework of a piece that picks up its tempo like the dance music from Zorba the Greek while mimicking the Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin'." On the more accessible side are "Monterey," a distant precursor to Joni Mitchell's more widely heard post-festival anthem "Woodstock," with some clever musical allusions and a great beat, plus lots of enthusiasm; and the shattering "Sky Pilot," one of the grimmest and most startling antiwar songs of the late '60s, with a killer guitar break by Vic Briggs that's marred only by the sound of the plane crash in the middle. ---Bruce Eder, AllMusic Review

Winds of Change opened the psychedelic era in the history of Eric Burdon & the Animals -- although Burdon's drug experiences had taken a great leap forward months earlier with his first acid trip, and he and the group had generated some startlingly fresh-sounding singles in the intervening time, it was Winds of Change that plunged the group headfirst into the new music. The record was more or less divided into two distinctly different sides, the first more conceptual and ambitious psychedelic mood pieces and the second comprised of more conventionally structured songs, although even these were hard, mostly bluesy and blues-based rock, their jumping-off point closer to Jimi Hendrix than Sonny Boy Williamson. The band's new era opened with waves washing over the title track, which included sitar and electric violin, while Burdon's voice, awash in reverb, calmly recited a lyric that dropped a lot of major names from blues, jazz, and rock. "Poem by the Sea" was a recitation by Burdon, amid a swirl of echo-drenched instruments, and it led into one of the group's handful of memorable covers from this period, "Paint It Black" -- driven by John Weider's electric violin and Vic Briggs' guitar, and featuring an extended vocal improvisation by Burdon, their approach to the song was good enough to make it part of the group's set at the Monterey International Pop Festival that June, and also to get a spot in the documentary movie that followed. "The Black Plague" opens with a Gregorian chant structure that recalls "Still I'm Sad" by the Yardbirds, and was another vehicle for Burdon's surreal spoken contributions. There were also, as with most of the group's work from this period, a few easily accessible tracks that could make good singles, in this instance "Good Times" and "San Franciscan Nights," a Top Ten record in various countries around the world in the last quarter of 1967, although, as Alan Clayson points out in his notes, the latter song was overlooked in England for nearly 12 months after its release elsewhere, and then appeared as the B-side to the relatively straightforward, brooding, moody rocker "Anywhere." Burdon was so inspired by Jimi Hendrix's music that he wrote one of the psychedelic era's rare "answer" songs, "Yes I Am Experienced," as an homage to the guitarist; the latter's influence could also be heard in "It's All Meat," the LP's closing track, and a song that calls to mind an aspect of this band that a lot of scholars in earlier years overlooked -- the fact that Briggs, Weider, et al. had the skills to make music in that style that was convincing and that worked on record, on their terms. ---Bruce Eder, AllMusic Review

Burdon odkrył dla siebie Kalifornię i wraz z gitarzystą Briggsem, basistą McCullochem i skrzypkiem Weiderem dotarł do Ameryki i spowodował jedną z największych zmian kierunku muzycznego. Wyprodukowany przez Toma Wilsona album „Winds Of Change” ukazał się w 1967 roku. Jest to prawdopodobnie jedna z największych kwasowych płyt jakie kiedykolwiek zostały nagrane. Burdon już odbył niejedną podróż w głąb siebie za sprawą popularnego halucynogenu zwanego LSD. Ta płyta to wyraźne przekształcenie świata w swoje wizje, leniwe, pełne otwarcia wszystkich zmysłów ku kolorowej przyszłości. Niezwykły, psychodeliczny, pełen kosmicznych dźwięków, poemat „Poem by the Sea” wprowadza słuchacza w… To dziwna chwila, kiedy spokój oplata mój mózg, chociaż serce jeszcze trochę łopoce. To trochę jak zapowiedź świtu, coś wąskiego i ostrego co biegnie jak promyk słońca. I kolejny udany utwór – „The Black Plague” recytowany na podkładzie kościelnych chórów podobny jest dźwiękiem do „Still I’m Sad” The Yardbirds. „Yes,I am Experienced” Burdon odpowiada swojemu kumplowi, który ledwo chwilę wcześniej zadaje pytanie „Are You Experienced?”. A i muzycznie nowe wcielenie The Animals plasuje się blisko Jimi Hendrix Experience, nawet jakbyś nie znał tytułu, to skojarzyć łatwo.

W 1967 roku muzyczna scena San Francisco zaczęła się rozwijać bardzo dynamicznie. Grateful Dead czy Jefferson Airplane wywarły ogromny wpływ na Burdona. Jak mówił w wywiadach: „To jest coś niesamowitego. Jesteś obok ale jak już wejdziesz w to, to nic cię nie zatrzyma. Posłuchaj jak oni grają”. Nic dziwnego, że na płycie pojawił się swoisty hołd dla miasta miłości. „Stroboskopowych świateł blask tworzy sny, ściany drżą i umysły też, w ciepłą noc w San Francisco”. Kolejnym numerem ukazującym fascynacje Burdona kontrkulturą jest „Man – Woman”. Głos Erica ekscytujący i tętniący życiem, opowiada historię miłosnych uniesień mężczyzny i kobiety. Pokolenie Miłości i Pokoju dochodzi do głosu a Burdon wykrzykuje cztery słowa: „Mężczyzna – Kobieta – Pragnienie – Miłość”. Ten utwór to jakby początek tego co wokalista robił potem z grupą War. Autobiograficzny „Good Times”, podobnie jak „Anything’ to dwie niezapomniane ballady oparte na orkiestracji.

Eric Burdon’s lengthy recording career began in Newcastle, England where his band The Animals quickly gained notoriety as England’s best R&B bad. He was the driving force of the grittiest British Invasion band, he pioneered the San Francisco psychedelic rock scene, fronted WAR - the biggest funk band of the 1970’s and cut an LP with an early influence, jazz-blues great Jimmy Witherspoon before coming full-circle and reuniting his original band, The Animals, for a series of projects and a world-wide tour. He has now formed a new group of “Animals” and is releasing a series of live CDs.

The session that produced this package was filmed in September 1970 and features four tracks, two tracks apiece from the two albums then currently available. The performance features the hit single 'Spill The Wine' alongside 'Tobacco Road', 'Bare Back Rider' and 'Paint It Black' which is extended way beyond its original two plus minutes with the version included here extended to almost 13 minutes in length. This performance then is a historic performance which captures Eric Burdon from an exciting period of his career and whilst the period 1970-1971 is a well documented part of Eric's career in print this film footage of Eric Burdon and War performing together is rare. ---amazon.com

The last time Eric Burdon & War played London, 38 years ago, they had a five-night residency at Ronnie Scott's and Jimi Hendrix jammed with them the day before he died. The former lead singer with The Animals and one of the most distinctive voices in rock, Burdon's move to the US in the late Sixties mirrored Hendrix's own relocation to the UK.

Under the management of former Animals bassist Chas Chandler, the guitarist hooked up with a white British rhythm section to form The Experience at the end of 1966. Following the break-up of the original line-up of The Animals, Burdon fronted the New Animals and plunged deep into the West Coast scene.

By 1969, he was, by his own admission, "an acid-drenched rock star, over the hill", holed up in Los Angeles and pondering a move back to his native Newcastle until producer Jerry Goldstein suggested he check out a black group called The Nightshift. With the Danish harmonica player Lee Oskar, they became War and formed an all-too-brief partnership with Burdon.

This one-off event, ostensibly timed to promote the release on CD of the two albums they recorded in 1970, didn't quite live up to expectations. Led by founder-member Lonnie Jordan, the current incarnation of War did justice to post-Burdon hits such as the groovy "The World is a Ghetto" and the irresistible "Low Rider".

Burdon joined 30 minutes in and instantly rolled back the years with the heady "Spill the Wine", the only hit the singer and War mustered up back in 1970. With the white-haired Burdon still in fine voice, the free-wheeling "Spirit" from Black Man's Burdon, their second album, worked fine.

When saxophonist Fernando Harkless and harmonica player Mitch Kashmar blasted in unison, the music sounded timeless, but the lengthy instrumental solos and percussion excursions were definite flashbacks to the hippie days.

Burdon read his once spontaneous, drug-infused stories off the autocue and there was a feeling that the singer, who briefly reunited with the original Animals in 1983 and has written two memoirs, has run out of options. Wailing his way through "House of the Rising Sun" broke another cardinal rule since, in 1970, Burdon & War never played his Animals hits. This is the complete existing recording of Eric Burdon & War's concert at Ronnie Scott's Club in London September 16th, 1970. The Show consisted of two sets. The Taper however unfortunately only had a C-90 cassette, so he flipped the cassette over, and recorded the last part of the concert over the first, thereby forever losing the start of the recording.

Although lossy, as it's sourced from a wma-transfer of the master tape, this version of the recording is still vastly superior to other currently circulating versions. It's also considerably longer, and includes notably more music. As for the two tracks that feature Hendrix, "Blues For Memphis Slim" (incl."Mother Earth") is now 8 minutes longer than before, and "Tobacco Road" is more than 9 minutes longer. Apart from a few (presumably) minor cuts, this recording features Hendrix's last public performance in it entirety.

Eric Burdon's second and final album with War, Black-Man's Burdon was a double set that could have benefited from a bit of judicious editing. Composed mostly of sprawling psychedelic funk jams, it finds War mapping out much of the jazz/Latin/soul grooves that would shortly bring them success on their own. Eric Burdon never stopped working but he did effectively disappear, falling away from the spotlight sometime before the Animals were inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. He kept touring, kept recording, but was decidedly underneath the radar until Bruce Springsteen made him a centerpiece of his 2012 South by Southwest keynote address, inviting the veteran rocker to share the stage with him later that night. Suddenly, Burdon was pushed into the spotlight and he capitalized upon his raised profile, cutting a quick and dirty indie EP with Cincinnati rockers the Greenhornes and then re-upping with Abkco (home of the Animals catalog) for 2013's 'Til Your River Runs Dry, his first high-profile record in eons and his first album of largely original material since 2004. At this late stage, Burdon isn't seeking reinvention -- he sticks to his basics, including two salutes to his hero Bo Diddley (one a cover; one a tribute) -- but he doesn't sound stale, either. He's engaging in the present by relying on his tradition, reviving the menacing minor-key rock of the Animals, touching upon a bit of War's multi-cultural funk, indulging his love of the blues, all while reflecting on mortality, waging a bit of social protest, recognizing that "Old Habits Die Hard," resisting the temptation to go gently into that good night. Burdon doesn't sound like a young man but he does sound invigorated, sometimes singing so passionately he teeters on the edge of self-parody, but that's the appeal of 'Til Your River Runs Dry: Burdon pours everything into this album, as if he realizes this is his last best shot to get the credit he's due.
