Fun. Plain, simple fun. That's Eden Brent in a nutshell. Whether she's in concert, at a festival or helping out fellow musicians, this vocalist and pianist thrills crowds wherever she plays. Ain't Got No Troubles, like her previous recordings, brings that same level of joy and energy.

A longtime protégé of Abie "Boogaloo" Ames, Brent grew up in the Mississippi Delta, surrounded by musicians. Her late mother Carol, and sisters Jessica and Bronwynne, all wrote and performed music. Eden Brent is a three-time Blues Music Award-winner, earning the 2009 Acoustic Album of the Year for Mississippi Number One (Yellow Dog) and Acoustic Artist of the Year, and 2010 Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year. She also has toured domestically and internationally.

For Ain't Got No Troubles, the raspy-voiced Brent is accompanied by Canadian guitarist Colin Linden, electric bassist George Porter Jr. and drummer Bryan Owings, with assorted guests on selected tracks.

The bouncy title song is one of eight written by Brent, as she sings, "Ain't got no buddies, ain't got no friends, ain't got no man, got no home to keep him in." The band throws in a little Dixieland during the middle break, with the horns underscoring Brent's playful keys.

"Let's Boogie-Woogie" says it all. Owings shows off a little on this track, making effective use of the crash and splash cymbals, while Linden solos on electric guitar. The quartet engages several stop-time lines on a song that inspires movement on the dance floor.

Linden plays acoustic guitar, as he and Brent perform a duet on "If I Can't." Brent sings, "I ain't much good without you, babe, it's plain to see; I was made for you and you were made for me." Like many of the songs, this one is a throwback to a long-ago era when popular music was devoid of electronic enhancements, and the music was more honest.

"Ain't Got No Troubles" is the only song in this set to breach five minutes, the others fitting comfortably in the three-to-four-minute range. Brent purposely keeps them short to maximize the possibility of radio play, but packs a lot into the short running times. However, it's a sad day when the commercial-heavy atmosphere of radio leads artists to produce albums with 11 possible singles and only one—or fewer—album cuts. The artists, and the listeners, deserve more freedom.

Despite that, Ain't Got No Troubles represents Brent at the top of her game. To some degree, nearly every song is autobiographical. And all are delivered with flair. ---Woodrow Wilson, allaboutjazz.com

Pianist, singer and songwriter Eden Brent released her debut on the Memphis-based Yellow Dog Records label, "Mississippi Number One," in April, 2008. Brent should prove to be a breath of fresh air on the all too often guitar-dominated contemporary blues scene. Her debut album shows great promise, with sparkling original songs and spry arrangements, most of them centering around what she knows best: the Mississippi Delta region in and around Greenville.

Brent has been described by various reviewers as one part Bessie Smith, one part Janis Joplin and one part Diana Krall, while others have compared her to Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan and Norah Jones. On "Mississsippi Number One," [named for the highway her parents' house was located on,] she effortlessly fuses elements of blues, jazz, soul, gospel and pop.

Brent's first big break to a wider audience might have been her 2006 win in the Acoustic Blues category in the International Blues Challenge, an annual competition held in Memphis that is administered by the Memphis-based Blues Foundation. Prior to that, she apprenticed and worked side by side with Delta blues specialist Boogaloo Ames for 16 years. She attended college at the University of North Texas, where she studied jazz composition and performance, but she got her post-graduate education on the road with Ames, traveling around Mississippi with the elderly musician and hosting both his 70th and 80th birthday parties. "Mississippi Number One" showcases Brent's ability to incorporate memorable phrases into memorable songs, but she also covers songs by the Gershwin's, "The Man I Love," Joe McCoy's "Why Don't You Do Right," and the traditional song about unwanted pregnancy, "Careless Love." She also covers several songs written by her late mother, Carole Brent, and dedicates her debut to her.

With the right team of booking agents, management and record company support, Brent will be a positive force, expanding the commonly thought of parameters in contemporary blues, for years to come. --- Richard Skelly, allmusic.com

Amerykańska wokalistka, pianistka, kompozytorka i autorka tekstów. Porusza się w klimatach bluesa, jazzu, soul, gospel i popu. W jej głosie słychać wpływy takich gwiazd jak Bessie Smith, Janis Joplin, Diana Krall, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan i Norah Jones.

Wychowywała się w regionie delty Mississippi niedaleko Greenville. Jej rodzice mają dom w pobliżu autostrady Mississippi Number One – stąd nazwa pierwszej płyty piosenkarki. Dorastała w domu, w którym często cała rodzina wspólnie śpiewała – w ten sposób rodzice zaszczepili w niej miłość do muzyki. Zaowocowało to późniejszymi studiami na kierunku kompozycji i grania jazzu na University of North Texas. Jednak największe doświadczenie przyniosła jej szesnastoletnia współpraca z bluesmanem Boogaloo Ames’em – podróżowała z nim i starszymi bluesmanami świętującymi swoje siedemdziesiąte bądź osiemdziesiąte urodziny po całej delcie Mississippi. Ames w końcu nazwał swoją podopieczną „Little Boogaloo” (mała Boogaloo).

Nagrywa również covery – „The Man I Love” George'a Gershwina, Why Don’t You Do Wright” Joe McCoy’a, czy tradycyjny „Careless Love”.

--- rmf.fm

An album by a Mississippi songstress on the Digest? How come? Well, Eden Brent is currently in South Africa for her appearance with Valiant Swart on the "Rainbow Blues" show at the KKNK. And to sing about South Africa, the country she loves so much. Read on...

'Something Cool' is Eden Brent's debut CD, but hey, this gal she sure ain't no beginner. Eden Brent was born on 16 November 1965 in Greenville, Mississippi, but she had this cool piece of work recorded at Sounds Unreel Studio in Memphis, Tennessee and she also produced it. The gentlemen who made this piece of art possible with her, are Donnie Brown on electric bass, Mike Dill on drums, Chuck Lawson on double bass and Kevin Lewis on alto saxophone. Engineering and mixing went through Dawn Hopkins, while the mastering was & well & truly mastered by Brad Blackwood.

Eden first made people look up from their TV-dinners when she appeared on blues broer Valiant Swart's TV series, 'Veertig Dae Deur Die Delta'. The unsettling way she can find her way blindfolded through a piano, her sunny smile, her dance in the setting sun, her stunning voice - like the colour of nutmeg, and of course her gentle rapport with old Boogaloo Ames*, playing and singing alongside him on the piano while Valiant was strumming away on the guitar. A truly unforgettable scene.

So it's quite normal to want more from Eden. Lo and behold, here's 'Something Cool', a mix of slow deep intense blues, here and there a crisp jazzy beat, and honest words from deep within Eden's heart. Something rather astounding can be found in Track 6 - 'South Africa' - a song dedicated to the country she recently met, the people, her footprints through the land. It speaks to you. Other tracks from her heart are 'Ain't Gonna Be Your Lonely Fool', 'We've Already Said Goodbye', the frisky cool 'Simple Geometry', and 'I Can't Seem To Lose This Memory'. Lift your bourbon an' ice to many more tunes like these.

Eden also does her magic quite langourously with 'I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water' and the succulently slow 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out'. At the end of this one, she sends the piano out - first to thrash you, then smooth your trenchcoat, and finally she sets you off to Neverland with the blue voice that sees everything.

Yes, Eden beckons you closer - to come on the 'Midnight Train to Georgia'. But she'll bring you right back with 'Send Me To The 'lectric Chair'. And you'll stay in her world of smooth blue warmth and bewitching vocal cords - simply because you want to. --- rock.co.za

Blues pianist Eden Brent is a relative newcomer to the blues music scene, but she's no wet-behind-the-ears rookie. Raised in moderate posterity in the poverty-stricken Mississippi Delta, she caught the blues music bug as a teen. Brent attended the University of North Texas to study jazz composition, but received her advance degree in blues piano by apprenticing under Delta blues musician Abie "Boogaloo" Ames. Brent traveled with the elderly pianist for 16 years, driving him to gigs, performing alongside Ames, and ultimately earning the nickname "Little Boogaloo." After Brent took first place in the "Acoustic Blues" category at the Blues Foundations' 2006 International Blues Challenge, she finally began work on what would become her debut album, Mississippi Number One.

Brent's piano style is a sophisticated blend of barrelhouse blues (with a boogie-woogie edge) and jazzy, 1940s-and-50s-styled pop. As she shows with a cover of the Gershwin Brothers' stately "The Man I Love," Brent isn't afraid to tackle a classic. She delivers wonderfully sublime, torch-song-styled vocals above the rich, shifting sound of her dancing ivories.

Brent is excellent working with sparse instrumentation, as displayed by the country-blues stomp of "Fried Chicken," which features Brent's twangy vocals above guitarist Rick Chancey's fine fretwork and squawking harmonica.

Brent is at her finest on Mississippi Number One when she places her piano play up front and center. The slow-dancing "Love Me 'Til Dawn" is a jazzy, late-night ballad with elegant piano work and Brent's sultry vocals. "Why Don't You Do Right" features menacing, bluesy piano that strives with Brent's dusky vocals for your attention, the slightly syncopated rhythm driving the song strongly towards Tom Waits' side of lonely street.

The gospel-tinged "Until I Die" features one of Brent's best vocal performances, a swooning and soaring wail above a jubilant choir of backing voices and Rick Steff's hymnal organ work. --- Reverend Keith A. Gordon, blues.about.com
