This album is by far one of jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon's best musical achievements. He captures the essence of Armstrong through his singing and featured trumpet solos. This is his first effort on a solo recording to play trumpet as much or more than trombone, and he has hit a home-run all the way! His trumpet chops are amazing and his sound has an "old timey" feel that really matches what this album is all about. Meatball 1,2,3 is just Wycliffe performing on trumpet, trombone and sousaphone--completely incredible. The title track "Hello Pops" is Wycliffe's personal "hello" to Louis Armstrong and after listening I just can't get the melody out of my head. This album makes you feel good and its the type of album you can listen to over and over and over, and never tire of it. Thank you Wycliffe for what you do! --- Musicbizprof, amazon.com

Herlin Riley (drums).

Wycliffe Gordon is best known for being the star trombonist with Wynton Marsalis' groups, but as he shows on the colorful Joyride, he is much more. Gordon not only plays trombone but a bit of tuba, trumpet, and even piano (on "Blessed") in addition to taking some good-time vocals. His music is inspired by New Orleans jazz while also including swing, blues, bop, and some more modern explorations. With Victor Goines also showing off his versatility (mostly on tenor but also playing some soprano and clarinet) and the rhythm section being both flexible and alert, this is a highly enjoyable and rather unpredictable set that keeps one guessing. The Joyride is one of Gordon's finest showcases to date and is further proof that the trombonist is the most important alumnus of Marsalis' bands. ~ Scott Yanow

Eight original compositions and Thelonious Monk's "Let's Call This" form the basis of this excellent small group by the trombonist.
