Caprice, violinist David Garrett's 2014 release on Decca, is a lively collection of crossover pieces that reflect his roles as a classically trained virtuoso and a populizer of many kinds of music. It's a balancing act that has great appeal for a large audience of casual listeners, and Garrett communicates both energy and excitement in his elaborate arrangements of music by the Romantic violinist par excellence, Niccolò Paganini, giving a contemporary sound to the Caprice No. 24, La campanella, Carnival of Venice, and other spectacular showpieces. He also includes his own lavish versions of themes from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, Mozart's Rondo alla Turca, Wieniawski's Capriccio Tarantella, and a smattering of flashy updates of old favorites. To add variety to the program, Garrett has also invited tenor Andrea Bocelli, pop vocalist Nicole Scherzinger, and guitarist Steve Morris, whose name recognition will draw in their fans. Of course, Garrett's unabashed showmanship and crowd-pleasing renditions of the classics will never win over purists, but since he makes no secret that he is an entertainer and not an academic, few listeners will feel misled. While violinist David Garrett is famous for bringing classical music to pop audiences, particularly through his crossover albums Encore, Classic Romance, and Rock Symphonies, he takes a traditional approach for his 2012 Decca release, Legacy. Playing Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major and various violin favorites by Fritz Kreisler with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Ion Marin, Garrett demonstrates his sincere attachment to classical music, which he claims as his first love. These are ardent performances, with great dollops of Romantic individualism, because Garrett styles his playing with lyrical phrasing and considerable rhythmic freedom, and delivers his solos with the abundant rubato violinists used half a century ago. To experienced classical listeners, Garrett will sound capable and serious in his intentions, but not especially insightful or penetrating, and is his playing is not beautiful; the lack of richness, polish, and sparkle in his tone and his generally coarse bowing suggest that more wood-shedding is required to bring his playing up to the highest standards. Still, the casual listener may find Garrett's playing adequate for getting to know the Beethoven work, and perhaps better than average for getting a taste of Kreisler's light encores. If Garrett doesn't quite ascend to Olympian heights in the concerto, he has lots of fun with such bonbons as the Caprice Viennois, Tambourin Chinois, and the Liebesleid, which have remained concert staples since Kreisler's heyday. If Garrett's strongest suit is his showmanship, there is plenty of flashy classical music that he can introduce to a wider audience. ---Blair Sanderson, AllMusic Review

Released in 2007, Virtuoso, the second album from violin prodigy David Garrett, consists of tracks borrowed from his debut album, Free, alongside three previously unreleased compositions, Pachelbel's Canon in D major, Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumble Bee, and "You Raise Me Up." Garrett's interest in violin began at the age of four, when his older brother received a violin from his father, who was himself an antique stringed-instrument dealer. A year later, Garrett had already won a competition, and by seven he was playing in public as often as possible. Within five more years, he had gone on to perform with an orchestra (playing Mozart) and at the age of ten made his concert debut. As his teenage years dawned, Garrett had already released two albums and appeared on television. This kind of talent was quickly picked up by Deutsche Grammophone, which offered and signed a contract with the violinist when he was only 14 years old. He graduated from Juilliard in New York in 2004, after having been a student with Itzhak Perlman. Garrett has performed with many of the world's orchestras, and in 2007 he played with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, touring the United States with them in 2008. In 2009 he released a self-titled album on the Decca label. The varied repertoire included music from Bizet, a version of "Dueling Banjos," plus a cover version of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal." A year later he returned with Rock Symphonies, an album featuring material from Nirvana, Guns N' Roses, and Metallica. Temporarily retreating from pop crossover material, Garrett released Legacy in 2011 which featured a repertoire of Beethoven and Kreisler pieces. His next release, 2012's Music, found a middle ground offering an even mix of classical arrangements and modern pop hits. In 2013, Garrett portrayed virtuosic 19th century violinist/composer Niccolò Paganini in the biopic The Devil's Violinist and released the Garrett vs. Paganini album.
