An album that defines virtually everything that is right about adult contemporary pop--and yes, there are a few things--Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind contains lush, orchestrated arrangements of songs by first-rate tunesmiths such as Jimmy Webb, Eric Kaz, Paul Carrack, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill, Isaac Hayes, and Karla Bonoff. Four cuts, including the Grammy-winning "Don't Know Much," feature duets between Ronstadt (still singing with power and assurance even at the top of her range) and angel-voiced Aaron Neville. Other highlights include "Adios," with multitracked background vocals by Brian Wilson, and the title song, which is driven to new heights by the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. This is one of those albums from the 1980s where you wish you could get into a time machine and go back to the production crew and scream: "Don't! No tinkly keyboards! No synth drums! No Jaco Pastorius-style bass! I know you don't believe me, but in a few years this is going to become as dated as that silly haircut you're wearing." So great are the songs and singing performances on this album, this may be the most poignant example of bad 80s contamination. Nonetheless, this album gets five stars because, most of the time, it overcomes the problem, and on a few cuts, manages to avert it (maybe someone DID show up in a time machine.) Some of the very best songs are little known. The duets with Aaron Neville are rightfully celebrated--including the hits "Don't Know Much" and "When Something is Wrong with my Baby"--they are wonderful performances.

But this album also represented a comeback/last hurrah for a couple of great songwriters. Jimmy Webb, whose "Easy for You to Say" is one of Ronstadt's best songs, is the writer of four songs to this collection, and all of them are terrific. One of them, "Adios," is a masterpiece, capturing with rich irony and sadness the end of the Southern California dream. The fact that it's not only Linda Ronstadt, the 70s LA queen, but that she's backed by the (then-reclusive) Brian Wilson, the inventor of the Southern California pop scene-- it's all too much! But it dances elegantly on the head of a pin, with a melody that will haunt you. The other masterpiece on this album is by a writer that Linda Ronstadt has covered previously many times, Eric Kaz's "Cry Like a Rainstorm." This is a really daring cut with a nearly dissonant melody line that gives Ronstadt a chance to open up vocally and emotionally. It's an unbelievable performance, heightened by the addition of a gospel choir, a full orchestra, and some big guitar and drum work. It could be overkill, but the song is sturdy enough to handle it, and Ronstadt has the ability to switch effortlessly from operatic power to folk delicacy.

Two cuts by British pub rocker Paul Carrack (co written by Nick Lowe) break the intense mood, and are charming. Although it was produced by her 70s producer Peter Asher, the orchestra, choir, Neville and the more adult-focused songwriting make this is a unique and essential album in her canon. ---John Stodder

This major 1973 release finds Ronstadt still solidifying her position as rock's premier interpretive singer. The country rock of the Eagles and producer/writer John David Souther remains the idiom, but Ronstadt has the voice, style and background to deliver this commercialized roots music with little loss of authenticity. Unlike Bonnie Raitt or Janis, she is relatively free of blues or R&B influence. In another singer this might seem a liability, but it allows Rondstadt unusually direct access to the emotional wellsprings of the country and folk which defined post-sixties rock music. Whether on the Eagles' own "Desperado," the country warhorse "Silver Threads And Golden Needles" or Neil Young's "I Believe In You," Rondstadt's powerful contralto emerges as a representative voice of a musical generation just coming of age. ---cduniverse.com

"Hey mister, that's me up on the jukebox," Linda Ronstadt sings on her 1975 album Prisoner in Disguise, and it was no idle boast. The album yielded two of her finest singles, thanks to the retooled Motown classics "Heat Wave" and "Tracks of My Tears." The album's support material is just as strong, ranging from a banjo-strumming version of Neil Young's "Love Is a Rose" to a plaintive pop reading of Jimmy Cliff's reggae classic "Many Rivers to Cross." There's also a simple but lovely cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" that predates Whitney Houston's glass-shattering take on it (for the movie The Bodyguard) by more than a decade and a half. One thing about Ronstadt and producer-manager Peter Asher: they knew good material when they heard it and almost always turned it into something truly special. ---Daniel Durchholz

This is a classic Ronstadt album, recorded when she was really in her prime, busy cranking out the volume of hits and those seemingly effortless and sometimes facile interpretations of other people's songs, showing just how original an artist she was. Like the legendary Johnny Rivers, who always seemed to have a magical touch for turning other people's work into brilliant covers and best-selling albums, Ronstadt here does a star turn with other people's songs.

The title tune, written by friend and collaborator JD Souther, "Prisoner In Disguise" is a haunting, powerfully performed song. Then too, James Taylor's "Hey Mister, That's Me Up On The Jukebox," is powerfully interpreted. "Heat Wave" and "Tracks of My Tears" are sizzling, as is a banjo-strumming version of Neil Young's "Love Is a Rose". She soars with an interpretation of Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross," and a lovely effort at blue-eyed soul with Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You". I personally preferred this version of the song, which is quite beautiful without the vocal histrionics of the Whitney Houston recording, which I think ruin the song as a vehicle. All in all, this is a terrific album and one that is really a showcase for Linda at her very best. Enjoy! ---Barron Laycock

On its face, Simple Dreams seems a crazy quilt of styles, from the friendly country-rock remake of Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy," the brooding covers of Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou," and Dolly Parton's "I Never Will Marry" to dissolute tales of rock & roll madness like the Rolling Stones' "Tumbling Dice" and Warren Zevon's "Carmelita" and "Poor Poor Pitiful Me." Yet Ronstadt is able to keep it all together, proving her interpretive depth and stylistic breadth all at once. Simple Dreams is perhaps Ronstadt's most adventurous rock-oriented album, and, with the exception of the drum sounds, which indelibly identify this as a product of the '70s, it still works. --Daniel Durchholz

Featuring a broader array of styles than any previous Linda Ronstadt record, Simple Dreams reconfirms her substantial talents as an interpretive singer. Instead of trying to compete with a newer, fashion-conscious pop marketplace, Linda Ronstadt removed herself from the rat race, recording an album of traditional pop standards with Nelson Riddle. Ronstadt's voice isn't always showcased to a fine effect on these songs, but the record is an interesting change of pace.
